Diving activities in Garmin Fenix 7

Hello everybody

Wouldn't you like the Fenix 7 to have some possibility of diving activities?

I know that the Garmin Descent MK2 exists and I think it is a wonderful device, but I am not going to dive more than once or twice a year, and that if I am lucky.
So I can't justify the money to buy one.

So I think it would be a good opportunity to include the most basic functions of the Descent MK2's dive computer and put them in the Fenix 7 (we are talking about no mixed gas dive and basic apnea).

I know this is possible, in fact, I used a Garmin IQ downloadable app for my Fenix 5s and it worked like a charm, just like my dedicated dive computer.

This would be a great reason to buy a Fenix 7.

  • i don’t want to dive with my F7, i just want to do snorkelling and know how depth i am. I don’t need any certification for this.

    Use this :

  • Disclaimer: I'm not a diver or an experienced freediver.

I'm incredibly frustrated with Garmin because I want to use my fantastic Fenix 7 Pro watch for snorkeling and shallow freedives up to 10 meters for a few seconds, but it's impossible with this model.

Garmin has deliberately limited the functionality of their watches, including the Fenix 7, Epix, Forerunner, and others, to push consumers toward buying their specialized Descent model. This feels like a blatant cash grab.

Let's not start with the 10 ATM rating. I understand the limitations, but I’m not asking for a full dive computer. I just want to enjoy some simple underwater activities during the summer.

For that purpose, the Fenix 7 Pro is now utterly USELESS under water!!!

What makes this even more frustrating is that, despite my hatred to Apple products, I have to admit that the Apple Watch is a better option for anyone seeking a truly multipurpose watch. It not only handles these activities with ease but is also somehow cheaper!

It’s disappointing that Garmin has chosen this route. They’ve turned what could be an amazing, versatile piece of technology into something that falls short for no good reason other than profit.

If you want to use Garmin watch underwater just for fun is best not to buy it, just buy an Apple watch.

  • I wear my Epix all the time while snorkeling and doing light freediving. It's been working fine. What's the issue you're having? In that entire very lengthy post you didn't mention what isn't working right for you that has made you so upset.

As far as I can tell, the only thing that doesn't work right is the depth reading (or lack thereof). And that's expected since it doesn't have a depth sensor, only an (atmospheric) barometer. Even so, you can install a ConnectIQ datafield to show you a depth estimate using the barometer reading if you want. Have you tried that?

    Actually they did.

I want to use my fantastic Fenix 7 Pro watch for snorkeling and shallow freedives up to 10 meters for a few seconds, but it's impossible with this model.

The key phrase here is "up to 10 meters".

Taken in the context of the rest of thread (which you are already part of), the specific complaint is that older models (such as Fenix 5) did not have the following limitation:

    https://www.apnea.me/dyn/

But since Fenix 6, Garmin has put "limitation" in its pressure sensor (used as barometer and depthmeter)...
    See their FAQ here:
    https://www.apnea.me/faq/

    https://www.apnea.me/faq/

Garmin has introduced a limitation on the depth measurement of all models of the last generation (Fenix 7 series, Forerunner 945 and all recent models) preventing the reading of depths over 3m.

Moreover, it seems that this limitation has been carried over to the Fenix 6 series in the latest update (21.00).

Whether you agree with this limitation or not, it's clearly a change from the behavior in:

    - Fenix 5

    - Earlier versions of Fenix 6 firmware

As far as I can tell, the only thing that doesn't work right is the depth reading (or lack thereof). And that's expected since it doesn't have a depth sensor, only an (atmospheric) barometer. Even so, you can install a ConnectIQ datafield to show you a depth estimate using the barometer reading if you want. Have you tried that?

Except, as pointed out above, Garmin is artificially limiting reading of depths over 3 meters (10 feet), so using a 3rd party data field / app won't help someone who wants to dive up to 10 meters.

Before you respond with "just buy a Garmin Descent it's a real dive computer", they also addressed that:

I understand the limitations, but I’m not asking for a full dive computer. I just want to enjoy some simple underwater activities during the summer.

Before the forum hive mind rushes to mass downvote me, please note that I did not say whether or not I agree or disagree with either side of the issue (pro-depth limitation or anti-depth limitation). As a matter of fact, idc.

  • I wrote the comment and i couldn't explain it more clearly, thank you.

Is not that i expect Garmin to change it back I'm not delusional but i am upset because i started with fenix 3 then 5 and now 7, my mistake was that i didn't realise soon enough that they have changed it because on my 5 it still works.

  • Than clearly you blame Garmin for something they changed years ago with Fenix 6 and you didn't do your homework checking current capabilities of device you bought.

BTW, in Fenix 7 you have snorkeling activity which was not available earlier and as it was mentioned in other tread you wrote your complains, Apple Watch Ultra have second barometer just for underwater depth measure. I'm a scuba diver and never would put my health on equipment which was not tested for such use. Even dive to 10 meters might be danger when you do it wrong.

  • It doesn't work i have it it's limited to 3 meters

  • Yeah i literally just got out of the sea
