Anyone have USB issues with 28.00 update? Windows says device malfunction.

I had to reinstall my phone and all my apps few weeks ago, including garmin stuff. Few days later my watch did an unprompted update without my validation to 28.00. I have asked if the downgrade would be available, and i got a response with the download link, Thank you. However as it seems right now after the udate, i cannot connect my fenix 6 pro solar watch to any of my computers. Is there any way to push the downgrade back to it from bluetooth, or from a phone? I cannot even copy anything onto it anymore. Windows 11 chimes of new device than it tells me that is unrecognised and there is an issue with the device. I did uploaded some MP3 on the same day that the update happened, and before you ask, I did not have garmin express installed on any of my laptops or computers. So the update did not came from garmin express. Also my watch was using 27.00 fw at the time, with auto update disabled, wifi/bluetooth disabled, and garmin programs also disabled on my phone. It must have dowloaded the update during garmin connect bluetooth setup process. Really diststeful as i did not want to change watch right now. R.I.P Fenix 6 Pro Solar Titanium. It is a shame that an over £800 watch only lasts 6 years. I will probably keep the titanium strap but not getting another garmin device ever.

  • In your place, although it is an unlikely reason, I'd try to clean the contacts on the watch and on the cable, and/or test another cable, just to exclude that a bad cable connection coincidentally causes the problems. Try toggling the USB mode in System settings from Mass Storage to Garmin, and after testing back again. I would also hard reset the watch, and if not helpful, I'd master reset the watch to factory defaults.

A complete USB failure is rather rare, I do not even remember anyone posting a similar issue in the past. There is no way to downgrade without the USB connection.

  • There is no software version 28.00 for the fenix 6 series.

  • Yes, there is currently indeed no official public v28, although there is 28.00 beta and since 8 days also 28.01 beta PR candidate. So in fact it would be better reporting the problem on the Beta Program forum, where there is a better chance to reach the developer team. If there is a bug in v28.00, then it should definitely be reported on the bug forum of the F6 Beta Program forum. Although, checking for updates over Wi-Fi, and updating to v28.01, is advisable before reporting it.

  • I did that, I am working in electonics repair. It is very unlikely that i am making mistakes like bad contact. I am designing PCB's in the last 20 years or so.

  • I had a similar issue and my watch was replaced under warranty. USB connectivity was gone as well as Wifi. However a workaround was to power off the watch and restart it service mode. You can do this by pressing the "down" button while powering up until you see the Garmin triangle.

While in service mode, garmin express could recognize the watch and I could access the file system. Keep in mind that I had to have express running for the watch to be discovered.

Hope this works for you as well

  • I will have a go tomorrow, and see if i can downgrade it back to 27.00 or before. Thank you.

  • note the garmin usb cable notoriously fails like mad

and what you are saying is typically what I experience just as it happens

I have to replace mine every single year for a decade now

which means a single connector cannot last more than 400 inserts, which is way way way below spec

fortunately the port on the watch itself doesn't seem to fail though I've seen people on older watches like the Fenix5 say the pins erode over time

the connector is supposed to be universal up or down, flip is fine, but right before it starts to fail completely it will only do a good connection in one direction so I put a piece of tape on the "up" side so I know not to waste my time on the other

  • Try to contact Garmin, they should propose a replacement for a lower amount to a new model

  • Hi,
I have a colleague who is having a similar problem to the one reported in this thread. I would need a more detailed explanation on how to switch to service mode to access the file system. At what point do you connect it to the PC via USB?
    Thanks for your explanations.
