Altimeter Calibration not holding

Nothing. The altimeter is just really, really bad. I have to admit, had I realised how bad it was I may not have purchased my fenix 6

I'd contact Garmin support if I were you. My altimeter has been a little bit wonky since installing the latest beta, but I'm talking about a 2 meter drift here. You could also try fiddling around with your calibration and sensor mode options and see if that changes anything.

if on software 20 or higher do manual calibration before going to sleep. was suggested in the post for that version. It seems to work fine now. Big pressure changes were coming over the night and alti stayed the same. no funky auto calibration happened

hmmm...I did an update just a few days ago.  Mine says version 19.20 (0fe794a)

yeah, I might have to do that. I was hoping to find someone that was fully up on these setting.  I've fiddled with them a bit in the past, but I'm not sure I'm understanding Garmin's terminology ....some of it seems less than intuitive.

it sure is disappointing!

I think the bigger question is this

       I've been unclear on how the thing works anyway.

ok, so I have a watch face selected that shows Baro and Alt

I calibrate the altimeter and both of these numbers indicate more or less correct.

if I'm not in an activity....so the watch isn't actively monitoring location.... the way I'm thinking about it, three things can happen

    a) My altitude does not change but the Baro does...time passes and the weather changes

    b) I change altitude but the Baro has not changed... I climb a hill in a rather short period of time in a steady weather pattern

    c) both the baro and alt changes....I'm on a long hike that has some change in elevation and over time the weather changes

in these cases how does the watch know which variable changes in each of these cases?

and then I suppose there's the same three options while using any of the many activity functions

such as walk, hike, run, etc....

Certainly the watch must have some logic to sort this out...but so far I have not found it.

Is there really a case where the altitude changes, but the barometer doesn't, or do you mean barometer adjusted to sea level?

good point.... but 

well yes, kind of  it could be "adjusted to sea level" or "adjusted to ground level"...but yes, adjusted to sea level would make the most sense because the reason you'd be looking at that number is to monitor weather trends...and that is what's reported

if I hike up a mountain while the barometer is falling, the elevation has changed obviously, but so has the barometer..... the barometer change due to both "altitude pressure" + "atmospheric pressure/'weather' ".

As it is, it seems like there should be a setting at least, to tell the watch either

• that I'm monitoring the barometer
• that I'm monitoring the altimeter
• that I'm monitoring both

there probably is such a setting but it has eluded me.....
