Battery issues after update 19.20

After updating my Fenix 6X to version 19.20, my battery is draining extremely fast. I took my watch off the charger at 0600 this morning with 100% and by 1400 it was already down to 70% charge. Before the update I would maybe be at 97%. I haven’t even used the device to track any activity, listen to music, and my pulse ox is turned off.

  • It is not a beta, even though that is what the download link suggests. It is a Release Candidate, which means that it is the software that is rolling out live now.

Take a look at the last paragraph, in bold, from the Release Candidate announcement here....

    https://forums.garmin.com/outdoor-recreation/outdoor-recreation/f/fenix-6-series/278277/fenix-6-series---20-00-public-release-candidate

Rollout of the live copy (exactly the same software) is only at 20% right now. You can wait your turn or go grab a copy now from that "beta" link.

  • I've just got a Coros Pace 2 - as you can see from my Fenix 6 Sapphire, the battery is at 15% and I only charged the damn thing 4 days ago....less than 4 hours GPS in that time. So I'll be charging on day 5 (tomorrow) as usual....

I'm curious to see how it stacks up battery wise.

  • was following the thread avidly, seems no resolution yet. I have charged my watch to 35% - have not used it for over a week now due to this issue. I had pulse ox on, and it was down to 18% in like 2 hours. Now I charged it t  to 100% and turned pulse ox to sleep only. Will report in the morning. I have reset the watch after the update and have not really started even a single activity on it. Maybe only by accident and discard.

So let's see... 20.00 release is rolling out, I have hopes altthough the release note say absolutely nothing about the battery issue.

I am sad to see Garmin's approach, I had similar issues with the Fenix 5 that I had. At least that was fixed. But if some people experience it and some don't with the same SW update, then it could be that there are specific hw revisions that are affected.

Also sad to see no communication from Garmin and no call backs. My 6X Pro Solar is 2 years old now and out of warranty, What now? It's a pretty expensive item :(

  • I’ve resorted to charging my watch to 50% and turning it off. Until a new software is released with the issues fixed, I’m not using the watch at a risk of degrading the battery life. Just using a simple digital watch for now.

6x Pro Solar on software version 19.20.

  • That makes two of us

    This might interest you then.

So this morning about 20 minutes before a 42 minute run this was the battery status of both.

Before (at that time of day my F6 is still in sleep power save mode)

After (my Fenix 6 ran out of power at about 37 minutes)

So Pace 2 used 5% on this run (which IMHO is quite high really) but Fenix 6 used it's last 10% and I lost about 1 mile from the as the F6 shut down mid run.

  • %5 is better than what I expected.

Yesterday I worked out and used strength training mode (Upper body mostly). I also tried sleep tracking (3 hrs and 53 mins deep sleep? ). I must say both functions are not even close to Garmin IMO.

Frankly, it is not correct to compare pace 2 with Fenix 6x. The equivalent is FR245.

Today I will analyze the pros/cons of running with Garmin vs Coros.

I hope Coros does not turn out a big PR balloon at the end. I bought Pace 2 because of pure curiosity. Also, I don't want to charge my Fenix often this much.

On the other hand, 10% situation of your fenix. What a frustration :(.

  • Frankly, it is not correct to compare pace 2 with Fenix 6x. The equivalent is FR245.

Agreed. The only thing that makes the 245 not an option for me is no power meter support.

I also tried sleep tracking (3 hrs and 53 mins deep sleep? ). I must say both functions are not even close to Garmin IMO.

So I have put my Fenix 6 Pro on charge and got my sleep data out, 5h 03 minutes Fenix 6, 5 hours 10 minutes from Coros, 5 hours feel about right.

So for pace when running, my feeling - and this is just a feeling as I have only run with it once is that live or instant pace is better than the Fenix 6, far fewer wild swings - I went up to 6:00 /mi pace (my 5k pace) and the Coros was showing 5:55 /mi and holding stready  so live pace feels OK. Unfortunately as that point my Fenix 6 ran out of power but I will see if I have any pace data in my .FIT file before the power cut out.

My feeling is that for running the Pace 2 will be very good - I think for general health metrics not so much. But that's just having owned it for 24 hours.

On the other hand, 10% situation of your fenix. What a frustration :(.

Yes, so yesterday about 19 hours ago my Fenix 6 had 15% battery, and then dead mid-run.

And a quick look at Coros wrist HR vs Fenix with HRM Pro (you can see when the power cut out from my Fenix 6 there!) - normally optical wrist HR is unusable for me due to cadance locks, but the data there looks fairly OK.

And it was in low power mode from 10PM. But charging every 5 days is usual for me since 19.20. Too be fair, even before 19:20, 7 to 8 days maximum before needing to recharge. But the battery loss since 19.20 is a very clear and obvious pattern.

  • Fenix 6x PRo, with 19.20 having same battery draining issue, I observed, during the night more lights that usual from the Pulse/oximeter sensor, sometimes disturbing me in the night, and blinking more than normal.
I did the test yesterday night at 23:00, at 100%, I disabled Oximeter to be only during the sleep.

In the morning, at 7:00 98%, no bad.

Now, 17:20 and after run for 25 minutes only today, it is at 94%.
A normal day, after 19.20, I´m having 80% or 75% without any sport activity.

I can say that the problem is the Oximeter
