(RESOLVED) - GPS Accuracy Issues Starting January 1st 2021

Fenix 6X Pro - s/w 13.10

My last 2 walking routes seem to be way off the mark when viewed on a map, whether in Garmin Connect or Strava. One had me starting 5 miles away.

Any reason for this? Is the GPS accuracy really bad? Are there any tips to improve accuracy?

Thanks for any assistance.

  • I saw it today as well. Beginning of my run shows weird GPS data, but it looks like the initial 1K of the run has it's GPS data reflected on am axis, if that makes sense. It's obvious as I ran back basically the same 1K I ran out and they dont match. That loop near the start that goes through a field should match the end bit. Setting was on GPS. first issue I've had with accuracy for quite a while.

Interestingly enough I did a brick session this morning (ride-run) and checking things between the two activities my bike track (via my Edge 530) is spot on, but my run track (via my FR945) is off as people have described here...

  • Just looking now and I didn't send any GPS data via APRS on my radio today, which is unusual....

  • Can this also be identified down to a time as well? My 1K start being wrong was about 2:45GMT, what time was others problem?

  • The last time something similar happened, it was when satellites started broadcasting wrong times due to upgrades. Nothing much any manufacturer can do against that.

  • Looks like I spoke too soon. Just opened the map and it has my position as being out to sea again. About 200 yards west of my actual location.

  • Just went out with my phone, Garmin Etrex Vista CX and my watch. Phone uses AGPS and cell phone locating so that was ok. But both my watch and my eTrex show the same ~300m offset to the west. This looks like a GPS satellite timing issue, one or a few must be sending the wrong time. At c~3x10^8m/s an error of 1microsecond in the timing leads to an error of 300m so possibly a time issue... Going to go for a short watch with my Anytone 878 see if I can get an APRS lock and confirm.

  • Interesting. My GPSMAP 86 is not exhibiting this behavior.

  • Yeah - APRS is showing a similar offset of about 300m. This is an Anytone device, no Sony chipset so this is a pretty global problem.

  • Wonder if it's one or a few satellites showing timing issues and different devices using a different satellite for the 'main' time
