(RESOLVED) - GPS Accuracy Issues Starting January 1st 2021

Fenix 6X Pro - s/w 13.10

My last 2 walking routes seem to be way off the mark when viewed on a map, whether in Garmin Connect or Strava. One had me starting 5 miles away.

Any reason for this? Is the GPS accuracy really bad? Are there any tips to improve accuracy?

Thanks for any assistance.

  • Just checked and mine's done the same.  Went outside to try the map app and after a much longer sync than usual, position was now correct

  • And just checked my wife's 6S which was showing expired - now showing current

  • FYI. In my fenix 6s, CPE shows Current tho. Today I waited for a few minutes before I started my run and I could see that the arrow on gps was slowly moving to where I were correctly.

  • If the CPE file is “current” does that mean it’s accurate, or it can still contain bad data, just that it’s the latest version of the file?

Seems to suggest CURRENT means the dates/times stored in it of satellite positions are current. I know when I just tested the Map app after finally getting a current instead if expired it took about a minute or two to get a lock - but the position was correct whereas earlier today it was definitely off.

It's a bit early for me to test it on an activity but I have a scheduled run for tomorrow so I can at least be aware

  • Interesting, before I wrote the post above I went outside (it’s lunch time here) had the GPS setting just set to “GPS” (no GLONASS) and opened a Walk activity and watched the map page. GPS got a green lock and the arrow slowly moved back to my home/current location. Once it was there I checked and CPE said current (then wrote the post above).

Just went back outside and opened a walk activity again, initially the arrow showed me at my last location but as it got a green lock, the location shifted to about 100m away and just stayed there. CPE still shows as “current”.

  • I'll keep an eye out for that tomorrow. In my case the timeline was I noted the CPE was current before testing.

Does the Map activity behave any differently?

  • Just stood in the garden with the Walk activity. Still a slow lock on but position is holding correct.

But I'll definitely keep an eye out for this tomorrow. I'm trail running tomorrow over a path I run a lot so I can examine the final plot well.

  • This time the arrow on the map didn’t move once I got the bad position. If I turned around the map followed me but position on the map remained. CPE showed as current the whole time.

  • Odd. I'm using GPS only as well.

One thought. Do a sync via GE or phone, and try a map lock again?
