(RESOLVED) - GPS Accuracy Issues Starting January 1st 2021

Fenix 6X Pro - s/w 13.10

My last 2 walking routes seem to be way off the mark when viewed on a map, whether in Garmin Connect or Strava. One had me starting 5 miles away.

Any reason for this? Is the GPS accuracy really bad? Are there any tips to improve accuracy?

Thanks for any assistance.

  • Back on this topic, when I switched the watch on this morning (I usually turn it off when not using it) and looked at the Map screen it showed the last position I was in yesterday (my driveway) but then when it got green gps lock, jumped to a position about 5km NE of here and stayed there for 10 minutes or so, I left it outside for a while and it corrected itself, but still seems to be some weird stuff going on.

  • The same issue in my fenix 6. Also after lock on gps altimeter show random numbers. Now i have 1306 m in Warsaw

  • Should be like 130m. Sometimes this gadget shows -200m :D

  • (3 jan 2021) Thank you for mentioning Glonass, my run's trajectory shifted about 5km north east for the start point, the pace and position on map when running were all over the place! I am using GPS+Glonass, I have friends with the same watch (Garmin 6X pro) and no problem... so guess giving a go at GPS only might fix it.  (UK)

  • I have a near new Fenix 6x. My CPE shows current (not expired), but tracking is way off. Location jumping all over the place during my run both on GPS+GLONASS and GPS+GALILEO since the last watch update. I always check I have a signal before I start, but it gets lost along the way, despite having minimal obstructions around me. Will try GPS only on my next run.

  • Still having issues, drove 2km from Home and started a walk in a conservation park, had walked for about 20 minutes when checked the map and realized I was waaaay off track (maybe 10km). I recycled the GPS (GPS > GPS+ GLONASS) and it eventually caught up with me. Walk start and finished in same location, finish is correct.

Seeing as how Garmin haven't updated the status of the issue, I'm guessing they are still working on it.

  • This is definitely not a fix, didn't work again properly. Sat outside and looked at the map, was at the right place for a starting point, when I started the walk, all of a sudden I'm several km away NW of actual location and took minutes to return to normal.

  • I had the same thing happen yesterday -- but only for about half the of the run.  In the middle of a ~4 mile workout it regained the CPE file (which now shows "current") and the track returned to normal.  The first part of it, however, was a hot mess and all over the place -- 1000' or more off in places (!!!)

  • I think one of the issues is that every time you open an activity or look at the map, calibrate the altitude etc the watch seems to go through an entire re calibration of where it's at. So even though you looked at the Map and got a good location, by switching to an activity page it goes through the whole process again and Maps and activity pages can all have different GPS settings (GPS, +GLONASS, +GALILEO etc). I find this quite frustrating for an expensive Sports watch when every other device I've used you just turn up, hit start and go, none of this *** of having to hang around in the car park like a weirdo waiting for the GPS to sort itself out.

  • Yeah, agreed. I have my Fenix 5 that I have never had a problem with and only got the F6 for Christmas, so sad that it happened this quickly. Hopefully it's a quick software fix and Garmin and Sony can get it figured out.
