GPS Accuracy

I am wondering the F6 performance dips when the battery is low. I have a 14 hours left and did a run. The GPS route is terrible. It has been through ponds and shrinks the run down massively. The black line is the route. I have the google gps  map too and it's no better.

Is the overall distance based on the gps data as my 4 laps are quite a bit shorter than the reality. Is anyone else having gps issues?

I really felt the F6 was the ultimate outdoor watch but I am a disappointed at the minute, especially given the investment.

  • Excellent research. Shows that it might be some parameter to tune somewhat better in GPS 2.70 to achieve better gps distance performance in Fenix 6.

  • That is very interesting. I've also noticed my F6x reports a bit shorter distance then I'm used to from other devices (like Polar V800, vantage M with stryd and FR935 ) On my usual short and slow run these days it's about 300meters on 8km distance.

Yesterday connection to endomondo didn't work so I uploaded my run manualy and noticed distance in gpx file was to my suprise 8,34 km which would match my previsous devices and garmin topo map as well (My estimate is afte rounding all distances so far before F6x the track could be about 8,2 - 8,3km).

I admit that my current slow pace after looong injury certainly does not help the GPS accuracy (even when gps track on the maps look very good to me), also I usualy pause workout several times during run. But I'm suprised by two things, 1. the uniformity of the total distance results. 2. that the GPX file actualy reports distance, which seems to be closer to the real one.

I'm looking forward to test it on certified race, because V800 and FR935 usualy reported about 200m +/- on race like prague half maraton track etc.

  • The problem seems to be very much in place if in forest, hilly terrain which obstructs and reduces gps signals.

Yesterdays run in open land with no "gps-obstructions" was F6 10.08km and Samsung S10/Endomondo 10.12km.

  • I tried to use GPS + Glonas today on short walk and distance seemed to be better, some time ago V800 reported 4,86km Garmin TOPO maps estimates 4,9km and F6X today measured 4,87km and the track is about 50/50 forest/open sky. Will try this GPS setting on tomorow run.

  • My experience with forest runs is that the F6 then clearly does consistently measure gps-distance 2-3% to short. Only occasionaly it is closer to the real distance.

  • Well I'll see tomorow. Be like be, I'm happy with my F6X, just searching for best GPS setting for my usual environment. And even if It would continue to measure a bit shorter it's not that big deal and I think it better than if it would measure longer distance :)

  • GPS+Glonass seems to be the best option for most. For me it is not ok to pay so much money when Garmins older devices and also new competitors with same Sony gps-sensor has better distance accuracy.

So I think Garmin should put an effort in to tweak the firmware to compensate for the gps shortcomings of the F6 construction/antenna-construction.

  • My forest trail-run from today, on firmware 6.00:

Fenix 6: 9.62km (uncovered on left wrist, GPS/Glonass, 3D-speed on, 3D-distance on, Auto Climb always, every second recording)

    Forerunner 305: 9.86km (right wrist)

    Samsung 10/Endomondo: 9.95km (hand holding)

I guess this also means that all health/fitness-data will be calculated wrong by Garmin Connect since the distance is to short.

And that is not what I paid Garmin for.

  • First run since 6.00 and the new GPS firmware. GPS+GLONASS and every second recording. I waited for 2+ minutes before setting off.

This is the worst I have had in a long while..

  • Wlould you mind sharing the TCX file for the three devices? I would like to compare and see how much Garmin is adjusting for the Fenix and where.
