Fenix 6x sapphire glass scratches

I’ve got fenix 6x sapphire for about a month. Today I discovered  that the sapphire glass has a scratch on it. Anybody has similar  experience with sapphire on 6/x?

both my wife’s and mine 5s/5x did not get any scratches during two YEARS of intensive use, which is why i was very surprised to see this scratch on the 6. I’ve always been telling ppl that sapphire on Garmin is indestructible- what was my experience with the 5x

  • This is related to the kind of panel, not to the kind of glass.

No, this is precisely because of the kind of glass - panels are exactly the same.

  • I have a Fenix 6 Sapphire and a Fenix 6 Pro and my Sapphire have very good contrast and viewing angle instead of Fenix 6 Pro that have a worse display. Instead, the Sapphire has very bad reflections and a yellowish glass.

As you can read in the dedicated thread, bad view angles and bad contrast are not related to the kind of glass. Probably Garmin buy panels from different manufacturer and put them over the glass regardless of the model type. Only Fenix 6S have all bad panels, unfortunately for my wife :(

P.S.: I am a video expert, I am working for a professional displays manufacturer.

  • i had same one its is so sad i spend more money on sapphire edition and it got schratch I am so dissapointed with garmin

  • I had a Fenix 6X and yes it appeared some small scratches, and screen has spots, I owned a 5X and never had it any scratches.

  • My Fenix 6 Sapphire DLC recently acquired a scratch that is only visible under bright light when the screen has fingerprint grease on it, so I must assume the AR coating is damaged. This is something that never happened with my old F5+ Sapphire.

Anyhow I am tempted to try and remove the coating and was wondering if anyone has tried using Brasso as I often used to use this to remove scratches from watch faces many years ago. Being a liquid it should be gentle enough not to cause swirls. I have also wondered about using Isopropyl alcohol.

  • The whole coating layer was able to be removed very quickly by Meguiar's Ultimate Compound in my F6X SAPPHIRE. There wasn't any swirls or any bad side effect observed. Sometimes I am using it to clean the watch surface from any residues/streaks whose are not able to be removed by simple cleaning.

I highly recommend using Polywatch, a product designed for just this purpose.  Their web site is here: Polywatch Site

The product is also available on Amazon (Polywatch on Amazon).

For removing the coating on a sapphire crystal, I have used the Polywatch version designed for plastic lenses - effectively removes the coating with no damage to underlying sapphire or surrounding bezel.

  • Thanks

    I'll order a tube.

I probably won't do it for a while as the scratch is not annoying me enough yet but it'll be good to keep handy if it does or if it gets worse.

    Cheers

  • Got a tiny ding on my 6x after a year of abuse with some previous scratches on bezel.   Barely noticeable but Noticed it after taking the speed sensor off my bike when turning on bathroom light.  At first seemed like a spec thst wouldnt clean off but clearly the glass after inspectuon.    Screen protector in the mail.  I thought it was in destructible since ive.banged it around alot,  but  guess a real sharp poke can ding it.  Similar happened to my forerunner 245.   I probably won't bother paying extra for sapphire in future.
