Maps do not have routable roads during hiking or trail run activity

Hello !

I am annoyed after some updates which change our preferences automaticaly.

Why Garmin team in 2026 cannot keep our preferences ? It's not the first time.

Right now, I have serious problem with navigation when you choose "Go back to your start point' during Hiking or Trail run activity : It says "Maps do not have routable roads"

I was in the forest and It was dangerous because I trust my watch to get back me at home. I was often using this option

Why it says you're not on routable roads when you're in main forest path or official hiking road. Only car road are working while you're hiking or trail running !

I cannot figure out how to find it. I lost maybe 1 hour !

Please help me ! I will be in Mont Blanc in two weeks alone.

  • This is AFAIK a known issue since the previous major release (v25) and Garmin still won't fix it.

    Simply mind-boggling...

  • Is-it real ? This has been going on for 3 months and this "dangerous" when you're hiking or trail especially when you count on this feature

  • It looks like you may need to reinstall the maps on your device. Walk through the steps in the following article to complete the reinstall steps: How Do I Reinstall the Basemap for My Garmin Wearable or Edge Device?

  • Hello Garmin team. I follow all steps to reinstall topo maps by clicking "resintall".

Yesterday, I was in the forest for trail running and still same bug ! "No routable roads ..." being in known forest path !

Guys ! I bought 1000 dollars watch which couldn't calculate itinerary since few month because you couldn't solve it. It's shame. Last time I bought Garmin watch. This si too much for me for bugs after updates.

Someone is testing update in Garmin Teams before pushing them ?

  • Unfortunately this is a very important feature but I don’t think they will ever fix it as I believe they try to obsolete these devices since the release of Fenix 8.

Install OTM maps for Garmin, delete all the topo Garmin maps currently available on your device and try to test it.
unfortunately they release fixes after fixes for Fenix 8 but for our devices every release is a regression.

  • My watch is Epix Pro Gen2 which was released less than 3 years ago. Garmin is not supporting main navigation function on our watch after 2 years and 6 months ? I bought Gen2 1 year ago !

  • Check in Activities and app if the Topomap is enabled...
I use the goback to start point often both following the recorded path or calculating a new route.

Activities and App -*activity* - settings - Map

Topomap has to be shown and active.
Check the same for every activity , Hiking , Walking etc...

  • I’m not convinced that Garmin or the watch is inherently dangerous. When tech doesn’t work, it’s time to rely on a map, compass, and some basic orienteering skills. If you’re out there completely depending on tech, that’s just not a smart move.

It sounds like you’re about to begin on your Mont Blanc adventure soon! Don’t forget to bring a map and compass.

  • People paid high prices for reliability but look’s like we have a huge discrepancy between the price and quality.
Also, I agree entirely that anyone who is doing adventures like that should relay more and tools like a map, compass, basic survival techniques in wild etc. than just assume a Garmin will be their best option.

  • Tech failure and bugs among Garmin products is nothing new - even among their premium tiers. As we all know software bugs is apart of any brand and product. As products become increasingly featured… unexpected bugs will occur. Paying a premium doesn’t guarantee anything and most likely means you bought the latest model. Which is why I have opted to buy Garmin certified refurbs. At $400 USD for my Epix Pro sapphire - I get a product that looks and functions new… yet still has a full Garmin warranty.

I agree Garmin needs to do better and I think they (Garmin) have realized that - which is why they opted to unify the software among their many watch models. However I believe the Fenix 7 series and Epix series are in sunset mode. As these models are on a software fork that has terminated.

I have briefly tried to replicate the complaint and could not. Mine is functioning as expected. Maybe certain regions are only affected.  Shrug
