HRM 600 pairing using ANT+ not possible after 26.09

I am trying to repair my HRM 600 with Epix (gen2) watch using ANT+ connection, but after the watch finds the sensor, it says that 'the sensor is using open connection, continue with secure BLE' and the options are Yes, More info (totally useless on this matter) and Cancel. Where is the 'No, continue with open connection' option...?
I've read the manuals and they are of no help on this matter.

I cannot establish an ANT+ connection anymore, I had it previously successfully done and used it, but unfortunately I unpaired the watch and HRM, and now after the 26.09 update on the watch it's no longer possible to pair the HRM 600 with the watch using ANT+.

Using BLE mode (2 blinks at HRM sensor + pairing mode) works just fine, but when I switch to ANT+ (three blinks at sensor) the watch will not connect. The watch finds the sensor and suggests BLE, but there is no way to say NO to BLE other than cancel the whole pairing process.

I've removed the sensor from the watch, rebooted, soft reset the watch and always the same outcome. I wish I would not need to do a hard reset. The sensor is not connected to any other devices.
If I connect the sensor with BLE, and then try to change the connection type, the watch says to remove the sensor and pair it again (which is what I've tried and the outcome is always the same). I've tried with the module on and off the belt, worn the belt wet with the sensor attached, and always the same result. Either I'm missing some step or there's a software bug in the open connection pairing process.

I prefer the ANT+ connection to BLE because of battery drain issue when BLE is in use:

Before switching to HRM 600 from HRM Pro Plus I charged my watch every two weeks, but after taking the HRM 600 into use using BLE pairing, I needed to charge the watch every 5-6 days. When switching the HRM 600 to ANT+ connection I was back to charging appr. 13 days. So A BIG DIFFERENCE on the connection type of the HRM 600 sensor.

I know I can pair the devices with BLE and always manually switch the connection off when not doing an activity, but what a hassle each time switching it on and off.

The HRM 600 and EPIX gen2 both support the open connection, and now connecting the HRM600 using it has been (accidentally?) disabled by forcing to use BLE.

Keeping my fingers crossed for a quick sw fix or having someone guide me how to get the ANT+ pairing working again!

  • Added Wrist HR plot (green) (optical HR) m_20.f_136

By the way, i never tried with optical HR off

  • Garmin customer service is investigating the issue. There has not yet been a functioning solution for this.

  •  It looks like our support team is currently working with you to resolve this via email. Please continue to work with them towards a resolution.

  • let me guess, they are making you create a video showing the problem

that is the new "go to" for Garmin to push away any bugs and slow down complaints

I had to restart my run activity four times this morning before it would finally pair to my footpod and hrm-strap

most definitely the same bug and we are powerless to fix it ourselves, only Garmin can fix

to me it's obviously overly-aggressive power savings attempt in turning off the radios

lets see how many weeks or even months it takes them to finally fix

since 2020 it's like there is just one developer left at Garmin being moved from watch to watch and once they leave a model it takes weeks for them to get back to it

  • same error here - can only connect to via ble secure and can't use ant ... fix this garmin.

  • Yeah, had to make a video.
Sorry to say that I'm not feeling very confident that there will ever be a fix, but I hope Garmin proves me wrong.
Feels like a massive disappointment to having an almost 1000€ watch and 170€ HRM strap and they won't connect with ANT+ even though Garmin says both devices support ANT+.
The customer service is very friendly and do their best, but it's the RD decision makers who now needs to step up.  Even if the watch is an older model, they should not degrade the features... That is not a way to make current user buy a new Garmin device when time for a new watch comes...

    1. Same issue here. Can only connect my hrm200 via secure ble to my Epix Pro gen 2. It seems to find the ant+ option but when I try to connect to it I only have the option to accept secure ble. I can still connect the hrm200 to my Edge 840 via ant+ so definitely an issue with watch having updated to 26.09.
  • Garmin says they favor the BLE over the ANT+ and that sw works as intended and do not see any bugs in the sw.

It feels like a scam to having a 1000e watch and 170e strap that according to Garmin both support ANT+ but the software does not allow you to connect with ANT+ anymore and the features you had when buying products have been degraded "purposefully".

"Intended" sw behavior seems a bit off though as the same sw instructs to unpair and repairt to use other than BLE connection but sw does not allow any other connection type than BLE as it is always forced.  "Bug free feature", my a**...

RD and customer service seems to talk their way out this. Either they have issues with admitting mistakes (which is completely fine if actions are taken to correct mistakes) or they are deliberately making old customers' watch features worse. By using the BLE connection, the battery life went from appr. 2 weeks to 1 week which I see is their goal.
Instead of getting me interested in buying another Garmin watch, I am tempted to switch brands, as I see this as a never-ending loop from Garmin - buy a watch, use it, garmin degrades the features to get you to buy a new watch sooner.

Instead of offering my watch to last a bit longer with the existing features being as they are (no need to get new features or make something better, but keep things as they are, not degrading the features!), eventually I would definitely choose Garmin as my next watch also. But with this kind of things happening with this price range products, I will definitely go through other manufactures offerings when I'm buying a new watch.. with an epix watch of over 4 years old, and now a battery life of 1 week, it'll be much sooner than I was expecting. And sorry to say, the other brands seem very tempting at this point.
Maybe I'll wait for the next sw update and see if it fixes anything, but I'm not holding my breath.
