epix Gen 2 OLED burn-in at 4 years — Garmin's out-of-warranty response and €353 repair fee

Posting this for visibility and to hear from others in a similar situation.

My epix Gen 2 (purchased January 2022) has developed significant OLED burn-in after approximately four years of normal use. Persistent dark patches and ghosting of interface elements are visible regardless of watch face, brightness setting, or software reset. No physical damage.

Garmin Iberia's out-of-warranty response is a flat €353.06 fee, which covers either repair or replacement at their discretion — decided after physical inspection, with no itemised breakdown beforehand and no right to confirm before they proceed. Replacement would be with a refurbished unit.

I went through formal consumer mediation in Portugal (CICAP). Garmin's position throughout was that the defect is not of manufacturing origin because it appeared after four years, and that the fee stands.

My questions for the community:

— Has anyone had OLED/AMOLED burn-in on the epix Gen 2 or Fenix 7 series within a similar timeframe?

— Has anyone had a different outcome with Garmin's support — either in Portugal, Spain, or elsewhere in Europe?

— Is there any technical documentation or independent analysis of OLED degradation rates on these panels that might support a manufacturing defect claim?

Any information or shared experience is genuinely useful. This is a €1,000 device and the support experience has been deeply disappointing.

  • Its an OLED screen... all OLEDs have burn-in issues after x years. My Epix Gen2 (purchased week after release) has some noticeable burn-in.

    Fenix 7 uses MIP display that has 0% of burn-in probability, because the fundamental tech is completely different.

  • My Epix Gen 2 was purchased 20 Jan 2022 and exhibits no signs of burn-in or other AMOLED anomalies.

    As with ALL AMOLED displays, burn-in artifacts - to a greater or lesser degree - are inevitable eventually.  How soon (if ever) before one observes this effect will depend strongly on user selected brightness level, use of AOD (Always On Display), and any prolonged display of an unchanging screen.

    Sorry you have experienced this with yours, but as it is out of warranty, it sounds like you are being offered a fair response from Garmin.

    There is no single number for every device, but modern AMOLED screens can remain visually good for years under normal mixed use. Lifespan depends heavily on brightness, heat, static content, and panel-care software rather than age alone.

    2. Do AMOLED screens always get burn-in?

    6. What is the best way to prevent AMOLED burn-in?

    Use moderate brightness, shorter screen timeout, less static content, less heat exposure, and keep built-in panel-care features enabled. Google and Samsung both recommend these kinds of protections.

    7. Is AMOLED lifespan worse than LCD lifespan?

    AMOLED is more vulnerable to static-image burn-in, but LCD has different aging and reliability issues of its own. One is not automatically better in every lifespan scenario; the result depends on the product and use case.

    8. Is AMOLED still worth buying in 2026?

    Yes. AMOLED remains one of the best display technologies for premium consumer electronics because of its contrast, color performance, thin structure, and design flexibility. Buyers just need a realistic understanding of how display aging works.

  • Sorry about that. Not that it is an advice useful now, but I never use Allways-On in general use, and also sometimes during specific activities. At night is also the "night screen". 

  • Probably not what you want to hear but I'd be excited to just buy a new watch. Four years is decent usage. 

    But I post this not to rub salt in the wound but rather to gain insight from others' expectations here on the forum: What is the target lifetime you hope for when buying a Garmin watch? Thanks! (My answer is five years) 

  • Mine is from 18-01-2022 and the burn in started well over a year ago.  I did not contact support. The screen is somtimes completely illegible with small letters. 

  • Did you use AOD or highest brightness?

  • Same here after 3,5 years on Epix 2 Saphire:

    Never used the main watchface in always on mode, lightning time just 4 seconds and i have to move my arm fast to activate, so it's not lightning very often. How can this be on a about 1.000€ watch? Do they use the same "quality display" on the > 3.000.- € Marq too? Rolling eyes

    "Always on" i use only during activity (bicycle or windsurfing), where meanwhile (with the newer firmware versions) it dims so much that it's unusable outdoors. 

    Astonishingly, the watchfaces used as "always on" didn't burn in, just the rarely used main watchface. As i don't use maps, one might think that it's not a big problem, but brighter parts on other contents (as letters or numbers) get partially affected too, so visibility is more and more affected. 

    What's astonishing too: The contours of the clock hands are about in the same amout burnt in as permanent fields, even if they stay hust one minute per hour on each position. Strange. 

  • Here is some additional information from the epix gen 2 manual regarding this:

    "Image persistence, or pixel "burn-in," is normal behavior for AMOLED devices. To extend the display life, you should avoid displaying static images at high brightness levels for long time periods. To minimize burn-in, the epix display turns off after the selected timeout."

  • I received the epix gen 2 as a gift in Sept. 2022. I'm having similar issues. I've never left it in always on setting and change my faces fairly regularly, I have 5 that rotate. 

    I see that heat may cause problems with burn in. I play a lot of summer golf and have also worn it in the shower and hot tub, but that's a free degrees over body temp, so that seems unlikely. 

    Reaching out to Garmin today. I'll amend this as information changes.
