Garmin – Backup / Restore = A JOKE!

This morning, Garmin Connect reported that my watch was disconnected.
Restarting both the watch and the phone didn’t help; Connect kept forcing me into the initial pairing process for a watch that had been in regular use for over a year.

Out of carelessness and false confidence, I decided to use RESTORE from the latest backup.

The RESTORE completed successfully, but ALL settings of ALL third-party apps were gone, meaning a full year of manual configuration had to be redone from memory.

I can understand issues with Android or Microsoft — thousands of devices with all kinds of different hardware.
What I cannot understand is a company that cannot fully back up and restore its OWN hardware!!!

Where would Apple be today with such an approach…

It’s sad.

  • I guess Apple would be where Android is...

I don't know where all the settings are saved, but possibly it is harder to restore settings of all the apps than for the watch itself. IIRC Backup/Restore is still a new thing, like introduced last year or so...

  • It’s ridiculous and disgraceful.
If there had at least been a warning that not everything is backed up — let alone the most important things. There is no excuse or justification for such a state. It’s nothing but incompetence and laziness. This is a systemic issue across products, and the result? Maybe 30% at best.

  • That's not true! The backup/restore-function works good, I did it the last time several times (but that's a different story).
I have an Epix Pro Gen2 with fw 23.18. After a restore all third party widgets and apps are back again (I have 11). Sometimes it depends from which situation I did a restore. If it was from a factory reset, my CIQ watch faces (I have two active) had to reload and to be reconfigured and I had to reload also my data filed ( one active), also my Garmin Pay has to reactivated.
This are actions done in less than 30 min.
One important point is, that after a factory reset I have to switch off auto software update and auto backup.

I have no problem with the backup function, for me it works fine!

  • That's exactly what he was talking about. The IQ Apps are there, but unconfigured. For me I use just two or so, so no big deal. But if you have a lot of them, it might be different...
