Epix 16.22 has broken the watch

Hi,

Seems my watch upgraded to 16.22 a day or so ago, and now it crashes any time it tries to record any activity - no way to get it back except for a reset.

I did manage to record one activity, so I thought it was fixed, but crashed on the saving screen - managed to sync after a reset but it lost the last part of the ride.

I can't follow any instructions to fix as any button presses cause the watch to freeze. Is there any cure or is my watch bricked?

  • Just checked my friend with the FenixS - that didn't have any solar widget on the watch face - but it doesn't crash as often as the Epix Gen 2. It works fine in the Gym, but freezes when the GPS is used (eg. running, cycling).

Their watch does have solar though (unlike mine).

  • Epix does not have Solar, thus that cannot be the cause of the problem. Something else is the problem.

  • Thank you so much for your willingness to test this, and for your prompt feedback. I am sharing these experiences with our engineers.

  • My watch is still running great on the 15.77, and my friends are having issues when their watches upgraded so I've been helping them downgrade to keep the watches running.

Are we any closed to a fix for the many watches suffering the issue?

One thing we do have in common is power and speed sensors for our bikes (and no solar) - so could it be related to that?

I have the Stages SB20 if that helps.

  • Is there any update on the crashing issue? It's been 2 months and the only solution I can see so far is to go back to the 15.77 firmware - appears more people are coming in on the forum and reporting freezing so it's not going anywhere. Are some watches or configurations just broken? 2 months is way too long to fix something that breaks the watches.

  • Well, everyone in my training group with garmins now have this issue where the new software cashes the watch. The "best crash" is just when a workout is stopped - others crash in the middle. Most of us have gone back to 15.77.

Is this the end of the road for these watches or is the bug still being worked on? It's been what 10 weeks now since it's been reported - is there any updates or are you just hoping people will give up and move on?

  • Update May 14, 2024:  Our engineers are still investigating reports of the crashing, freezing and rebooting since the 16.22 update. If you are experiencing this concern, and have not already, please feel free to reach out to me directly via Private Message, or contact Garmin Product Support. We would like to collect specifics from what you are experiencing.

  • Hi,

    Similar problem on my side.

Epix 2, no issues before 16.22. Once I got 16.22 it started crashing at the end of my activities (running).

It was weird: first music started lagging, then screen got black with no way to switch it on. Watch was probably still active as pressing buttons caused sound and vibrations, after a few button presses (random) it crashed and restarted.

Today it crashed probably just a few seconds after activity start (bike).

    Additional info:

with running - it happened with headphones connected and without them as well, usually I have running pod connected.

with bike - no additional accessories connected.

For both of them I use only customized screens, no external widgets.

Guys, please fix it, crash during activities is not nice, especially for "top" level watch.

    Best regards,

    Paweł

  • Hi,

I also experience clock freezes from time to time during cycling activities.

It happens occasionally and it doesn't matter whether I cycle for 1 minute or after a few hours. The moment of suspension is random.
  • Could you please add feature for easy rolling back software after so bad update like this one?

Just a "one click" somewhere around 'System Update' menu.

Observing software quality in my opinion it would be very useful and would decreased people frustration (including my) with updates like 16.22 which should never be released as public.
