Epix Gen 2 Pro not recording all of my sleep

So I purchased a Epix Pro Gen 2 about 4 months ago. I previously had the Epix Gen 2 (not Pro) and before that the Fenix 5. Both of my prior watches tracked my sleep flawlessly. I typically get up during the evening for some period of time. My old Fenix would stop recording sleep at this point, but I would edit the data and it would capture all the data based on the new "wake up time I gave it. The Epix Gen 2 was even better at recognizing I went back to bed and continued to record. Occasionally I would have to edit the sleep data. But it was better than the Fenix 5.

So I upgraded to the Epix Pro to get some of the new running features. But it has been horrible in tracking my sleep. Which now affects a lot of my metrics including recovery stats and other things. Basically a big chunk of this very expensive watch is effectively broken. If I try to edit the sleep data, it is filling in the gap with "Light sleep" and does not capture the time I was awake or any additional REM or deep sleep.

I have gone through about 3-4 updates from Garmin hoping one of them is going to fix this. At this point, I am tempted to shelve this watch and go back to a standard Epix Gen 2 as it was working great. But I am hoping my investment in this watch is not wasted!

Garmin please help!

  • Three months and no answer.  Not a good sign.  I too am having the same issues and tried different watch locations/positions to no avail.  At least tell us if there are plans to address this, Garmin.

  • Yeah so I had an offline conversation with support on this issue. They basically said it is "working as designed." :-/ Which is super frustrating because I would be fine with it if it continued to record my sleep data after it thinks I am "up" and still in the configured sleep time. But it doesn't. So when I manually adjust my wake-up time, it just fills in the period I went back to sleep with generic "light sleep." My old Fenix 5 would continue to record sleep data and then use that data when I adjusted the wakeup time.

So now my "hack" is to take my watch off so it doesn't pick up motion from my arm... then put it back on when I go back to sleep.

  • I almost never pop into these forums anymore, but for the last 3-4 months sleep metics and morning report are cartoonisly broken. Without fail, I get one night of good sleep, and then next night it's bad sleep and it has rubberbanded like this for months.

Garmin sleep metrics have never really been that great, or even based on much science, but this is laughably bad.

  • i`ve got same issue my pervious Fenix 6x record sleep metrix much better ,  now on EPIX pro it looks owfull and some times it even read my sleep metrix last time i lost two days and now its already going three days , why i have to pay such price for disapointment

  • I rate the Epix Pro Gen 2 51mm Sapphire as follows:

    - Durability: ★
    - Reliable Functionality: no stars

Initially, my Epix Pro Gen 2 51mm Sapphire recorded sleep data consistently for the first two months. However, during the third month, the sleep tracking became highly unreliable. The device often gets the onset time correct but underestimates the wake time, and sometimes both are incorrect. The sleep phases no longer match those recorded by my other sleep app. Additionally, it now incorrectly shows high stress levels during most of my sleep, which negatively affects the body battery score.

Given that so many measured, derived, and calculated metrics are known to be unreliable, it begs the question: can I trust the HR, respiration, HRV, VO2, or frankly anything this watch is reporting? Nope.  I only trust the timer.

II have a PhD in Chemical Engineering, have worked for many years managing at Intel, and have used a lot of devices over the years. If Intel made a device that performed like this, it would never reach production. Sadly, there is no way I can recommend the purchase of this $1100 durable papefrweight.

  • Your sleep recording experience is hard to judge without any additional data.

But using Intel as a paradigm... I'm not so sure if that is really a path you want to take.

U.S. chipmaker Intel was once dominant, now struggles to stay relevant (cnbc.com)

  • Was there any improvement at all when you changed your normal sleep start and end times?

  • Not for me. 10 months in and still the sleep capture is broken.

  • Did you ever get an answer to this issue.  I have just purchased the Epix Gen 2 last week, and it is not reporting my sleep at all. I have to manually enter any sleep I have.  I previously had the Garmin Instinct basic model, never missed a beat for 3 1/2 years, always accurately reported my sleep.  Wondering is there an update or a fix for this?  Don't want to put this expensive watch back on the shelf for the previous one which I must say for it's cost and features, was an awesome watch.

  • If you have enabled Battery Saver during sleep then you need to edit it so that WhR is set to Do Not Change - assuming you have WHR on usually.
