Watch faces go to sleep too quickly / buggy after 13.22

Since updating my epix (gen 2) to 13.22, Connect IQ watch faces are acting weirdly.

Sometimes when I wake up the watch faces, they wake up and then go directly back to the face's sleep mode. Other times, it'll go to sleep mode too soon - before the screen goes back to sleep.

I have always-on display (AOD) on and a 15-second timeout.  At about the 8-second mark, all the Connect IQ watch faces goes to sleep.  Then it sits like that for the remainder of time until the screen actually sleeps at 15 seconds.

This only applies to faces downloaded from Connect IQ (not Garmin built-in ones).

Here's a video showing Mobile Driveway's GLANCE watch face (best of 2022) with this bug.  All other Connect IQ watch faces I have act the same way, so I think this is a Garmin bug with 13.22.

In this video:

  • When I go to wake up the watch with the "light" button, the screen turns on and the watch face exits sleep mode, but instantly the watch face returns to "low power" mode.  (I turned on the beeps with the buttons to make sure I wasn't double-tapping the button)
  • I press the "light" button again at the "03" second mark, and it stays in high-power mode until "13".  Then the watch face goes into sleep mode (after only 10 seconds).  5 second later, the watch screen itself goes into sleep mode.

Is anyone else experiencing weird things with their watch faces since updating to 13.22?

Contact the developer(s) of the watch faces.

  • Thanks. I am a developer of a few faces in the store.  And this issue is common across multiple faces by different developers, so I doubt it’s something the individual developers can fix, since everyone’s watch faces just got impacted.

Some of these faces haven’t had updates in a few weeks/months and we’re working fine before the 13.22. So they didn’t just push up bugs. It’s on the platform / software side.

  • Happening to all my CIQ watch faces as well - really annoying.

  • Hi

i tried contacting you but I don’t think the message went through.

  • Same here, CIQ watch faces go to aod mode too soon, immediately or randomly during the 8-15 sec time, usin 13.22 epix 2

  • Can’t seem to send you a PM. This is happening to me too. It’s very random though. Most of the time it’s fine.

  • same here, watch goes to AOD randomly, can't identify any clear pattern. Watch is set to "wrist gesture" and sometimes it shows AOD at start of gesture and than switches to "normal", sometimes it's the other way around. It never happend in the previous software versions (currently running 13.22).

  • Hi ,

Thanks for coming back to the thread with a response from engineering.  Can you clarify what behavior is by design?  It seems they might be referring to something else.

There are a number of issues at play, and I'm curious what they consider to be behaving as designed:

    1. CIQ Watch Faces Sleeping Before Timeout
      1. What's happening in 13.22?
When set to 15-second timeout, all CIQ watch faces go back to sleep a few seconds before the screen actually times out.

      2. How frequently is this happening?
        Consistently

      3. What's expected?
The CIQ watch faces stay in the "awake" state for the full duration of the screen timeout (or until the user presses the "light" button).

      4. When did this issue begin?
        After 13.22

    2. CIQ Watch Faces Randomly Skipping "Woken" State
      1. What's happening in 13.22?
The watch will "wake up" and go right into the "sleep" mode again after just a split-second, without any user interaction or gesture.

      2. How frequently is this happening?
        Randomly

      3. What's expected / what was prior behavior before 13.22?
When the watch wakes up, the watch face also wakes up and remains that way until the timeout (or the user presses the "light" button).

      4. When did this issue begin?
        After 13.22

    3. Touchscreen Fails to Extend "Woken" State
      1. What's happening in 13.22?
Touching the watch screen when "woken" doesn't reset the timeout -- there's no way to extend the screen wake state

      2. How frequently is this happening?
        Consistently

      3. What's expected / what was prior behavior before 13.22?
As a user, I can repeatedly tap the screen to extend the timeout duration so that I can read & understand the data on my watch face when it is in high-power mode.

      4. When did this issue begin?
        After 13.22

    Thanks!

    Mike

  • Dear Garmin, I've been using the Garmin Watchfaces for quite a while longer than I am used to before I needed something fresh.
Fortunately I found something fresh... However.... The constant switchint to a blue neon watchface, nobody ever either set nor installed on my watch, instead of my beautifull luxury watchface, i purchased, makes this watch look cheap and is quite an embarassment when ppl witness it.
When do you intend to have this covered? This issue appears to go on for a while now, doesn't it?
