Insane heart rate reading.

I've got a HR alert set for 100 bpm (for my previous Fenix 6x pro and now the Epix 2.)  Occasionally it's gone off when I was suspicious of it.  I've also had my heart rate strangely instantly jump up 10-20 bpm say from 120 to 140 bpm when riding the bike or running (with the Fenix.)  Today after doing a set of pushups I sat down to review my emails.  My watches HR alert went off showing a BPM of 157!!!  I immediately grabbed a finger monitor out of the medicine cabinet and compared it to the watch.  While the watch read 150 bpm the finger monitor read 95.  I sat a while till the finger monitor read 55.  The watch read 83.  Removed the watch and could see what I would call typical body oil or sweat on the LED lens.  I wiped it off put the watch back on and immediately it dropped to 60 and then matched the finger monitor.  Anyone see this crazy a behavior?  Anyone have their sensor be so sensitive?

  • When I use my HR monitor belt (polar H10), and then I take if off of my chest, it does not switch off automatically. It still send HR infos to my watch even if I wear my watch but not my polar H10 any more.

Many times, my watch noticed me that my HR was very high (>150), though I was resting on my chair and analysing my runs.

Do you use a HR belt ?

  • Yes.  But this was definitely from the watch.  I watched it slowly drop while always staying higher than the finger monitor and when I wiped off the watch HR LEDs it went back to normal.

By the way, I use a Garmin chest strap and I've never had it switch to it when it wasn't on my chest.

I have a Garmin HRM Pro and when I take off the strap first, wash it and hang it to dry, take off and wash the watch, no heart rate monitor attached to my body, I continue to get high spurious reading from the hanging band. This has been verified by Garmin support that the readings came from the band. Note, the HRM Pro can store heart rate data and subsequently synch to your Garmin account. This may or may not be your case so if it happens shortly after removing an HRM Pro, it can come from the band.

  • That wasn't the case here.  I haven't worn my chest monitor in two weeks.  It was no where near the watch when this happened.

I typically remove my chest monitor and wash it off right before I shower.  I hang it to dry in my closet and put my watch on the charger.  When I get out of the shower I put the watch back on and it has always read my HR from the watch.

In that case, your problem is different. We do the same thing however when we wear the chest strap and in my case the reading from the hanging strap continues for a while with crazy figures.

  • When I connect a chest strap ( Wahoo tickr) to the epix at the start of a workout for about a minute it gives me erratic wildly jumping hr readings in the low to 160-210 range but then stabilises at normal readings

  • I use an electrostatic gel on mine and it reads reliably right away.
