Endurance score - ignoring a marathon!

It looks like a treadmill run doesn't contribute to endurance score? Is this correct?

I ran an indoor marathon around a disused prison on Saturday, and my Endurance Score has just totally ignored it. I started as a normal run, but then switched sports to 'treadmill' when the GPS failed (it was 95% indoor). Surely that's a major bug in this metric? Or am I missing something?!

  • It looks like a treadmill run doesn't contribute to endurance score? Is this correct?

Yes, correct. VO₂max and all derived metrics (Endurance Score including) are only measured outdoors with a GPS signal. See also the document support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=lWqSVlq3w76z5WoihLy5f8

Indoors, there is very little to no chance to get a reliable GPS signal. It is not a bug, it is how GPS functions. And if you mean he lack of Endurance Score at treadmill running, then it is also not a bug. It is intentional.

  • Why on earth is that? I was wearing a heart rate monitor, and took distance from the internal gyros. Same for VO2max - I usually wear a footpod and get very accurate pace. Why does the garmin need GPS?!

This will also mean that treadmill interval sessions wont impact the VO2max data in the watch. Sounds like a major flaw to me.

I wonder what would happen if I had the GPS enabled, but set both distance and pace to the footpod?

  • It is how it is designed. We can only speculate why, but most likely because Garmin does not trust the accuracy at indoor running sufficiently.

I do not have Enduro 3, so cannot tell for sure, but when I tested it with my Instinct 2 and HRM-Pro (also delivering pace & distance), it did not work. What did (sometimes) work, was locking the GPS outdoors or in the proximity of a window, and starting the outdoor Run activity while running indoors. The sensor setting for Pace & Distance had to be in the mode "Indoor" (not "Always" !). The watch uses the sensor even during outdoor runs, when GPS signal is insufficient.

  • I think "Indoor Run" may have been a better match than "Treadmill Run".

While VO2Max changes do require a GPS signal (treadmill speed and distance are notoriously inaccurate, and IMHO Garmin are right to exclude it), most other metrics should use your existing VO2Max.
