Incident detection and cancelling it?

Hi,

Have others have gotten incident detected and managed to cancel it?

Today slipped on Trail Run and it was detected. Showing like press down for cancel, usually it has been that you need to press and hold, but like, when pressing or pressing and holding nothing seemed to happen. No counter that press still X seconds to cancel. So I didn't manage to cancel it.

Have others got those and what are your experience? And have you managed to cancel it?

Looked at the manual, if this would be somehow different that I had on Forerunners, but manual just says, you can cancel it:

"When an incident is detected by your DescentTm watch and your phone is connected, the Garmin Connect app can send an automated text message and email with your name and GPS location (if available) to your emergency contacts. A message appears on your device and paired phone indicating your contacts will be informed after 15 seconds have elapsed. If assistance is not needed, you can cancel the automated emergency message."

Ok, How?

  • This feels pretty pointless. You cannot say is it running the exact same code path by just testing it from UI even if looks and behaves same way in some other watch. If you don't have experience on dismissing Descent Mk3 Incident Detection your answers does not unfortunately are what I'm looking here.

  • As I wrote - test in real life, and you will see. The incident detection triggers when you very abruptly stop moving for more than 30s, so it is not that difficult to test it. You can then easily test the canceling of the alert, just as I did with other models.

  • Huoh. Your answers are not helping. Yes, I can test it, maybe I will, maybe I won't...

Also I would think it's pretty stupid from Garmin that long press doesn't dismiss that. Like is there any reason for that? The long press in the requesting assistance does nothing. Why? I can't at least have any good reason why wouldn't the cancel accept long press of that button that is indicated.

  • Your answers are not helping.

Sorry, but I do not understand why. I have clearly explained you how to discard the alert, and also how to test it if you do not trust me it works in that way on your watch (although I bet it does). I am afraid I cannot do more for you.

Also I would think it's pretty stupid from Garmin that long press doesn't dismiss that. Like is there any reason for that? The long press in the requesting assistance does nothing. Why? Because the long-press has a different function, so to avoid the confusion. On my current Instinct, the long press of the bottom left button has the function to call the ABC screen (Altimeter-Barometer-Compass). However, if you think it is stupid, feel free to suggest a change to Garmin at Share Ideas | Garmin

  • Sorry, but I do not understand why.

    Yes. I notice.

Because the long-press has a different function,

If it has different function, why doesn't the different function then work? I have Hold DOWN to "Change sport". If I would have done today long presses, it should have offered me to change the sport if what you are saying is true, right? It didn't. Then maybe my presses weren't long? Or maybe the long press does nothing during it if it's "Change sport" and why doesn't it then work?

Interestingly then apparently does the long press work is dependent on the action you have set to Hold DOWN. Changed the Hold DOWN to Calendar and that pop open to at least the assistant request, hard to say for Incident as don't have energy to go test that. And did test it having activity active and not, no difference, the "Change sport" does nothing when requesting assistance.

This makes no logical sense to me, that some of the actions work during those and some doesn't. So what is the logical sense here?

  • So if it has somehow disabled my action to "Change sport" as that is happening, then yes, I would really expect it to then cancel the incident or requesting assistance and just not do anything.

  • As I wrote, either use the button action designed for the cancelling, or request a different functionality directly from Garmin (and wait a few years whether Garmin really implements it). We canot offer you anything else, here on the forum, regardless whether you like it or not.

  • I used the button designed for it.

The thing that you are not understanding here is that you talk as some WE here in the forum and think you are helping, but you don't seem to have any understanding what I'm talking and you are just repeating yourself.

There is no mention that it should be PRESS or HOLD in the UI tells "Cancel" arrow down. You see that so rarely, I think it was my first with this about 9 months of having this watch.

The UX is bad here and I don't want you to be able to anything else than have some common sense and understand that the UX on that isn't the best. I'm not expecting you personally do anything about to it, other than maybe just shut up, finally, but I doubt you can do that either.

    Like to sum this somehow:
    - "Cancel" arrow down. No mention should it be PRESS or HOLD. You see that so rarely and have the panic of countdown and urgency. If it would be good UX, it would cancel it on both actions.
    - If the Hold DOWN is different function, why it's then dependent on what the action is, does it work during those. Makes little sense in UX wise. How one could know which does it's action and which doesn't and why that even is like that.
    - In both things I think that it should just take over all the buttons and only button that would work during the countdown should be the Cancel button and it should not matter is it press or hold.

Ps. I also like your optimism that Garmin would implement something from the IDEAs.

  • Your question in the OP was:

Have others have gotten incident detected and managed to cancel it?

It was clearly answered. If you have more questions, do not hesitate to ask.

  • This is Descent Mk3 forum. You don't even have Descent Mk3. You haven't managed to cancel it with Descent Mk3.
Your answer that you have managed to cancel it in some other watch does not guarantee it works with Descent Mk3. So you haven't even answered that.
