Descent MK3i - map sync failed

Good day.

I have had a problem with my mk3i for a long time. After connecting it to the charger, a message appears saying that the map is being updated. It starts downloading and when it reaches 100%, I get a message that the synchronization failed. Then the watch starts downloading another map and the situation repeats itself. After connecting it to the computer, the Garmin Express program tells me that everything is up to date.

I tried deleting all the maps and downloading them again, but the problem persists

Can someone explain?

  • I'm having the exact same issue and after reading forums from other Garmin watches like thwbfenix series, other people are having it too. It's bloody annoying.

  • I have the same issue on Mk3i 51 I tried to upload TopoActive Maps Europe update as prompted. After 2 hrs download reaching 100% map synchronization failed. Absolute frustration. Tried again. Same result. I live in the UK and now I don't have any maps apart from main highways, no streets, parks etc I had before. I tried again with Garmin Express. Cannot see my mk3i now. Tried different ways. Still the same.

My latest firmware is 19.50 now after partial map display problem in 19.46.

Tried to reset to factory settings. No such thing anymore. Still the same problem. Any software update is worse than the previous one creating more problems.

I paid £1500 for the watch and I am close to throw it out through the window.

  • Did you check whether other parts of Europe are affected? I am going hiking in the UK this summer and wonder wether it's a map issue or something wrong with your watch. I am in Germany and don't have this issue at the moment

  • Hi Micha, I cannot advise you. There is some risk. I was happy with the watch before I started updating. Some others have similar experience.

I bought it brand new 9 months ago and it was barely used.

Will be going to Cairns Australia for diving in August.

I will try again to download TopoActive Maps Europe and Australia New Zealand sometimes next week.

Anyway so far it wasn't a straight forward or successful process in my case. Will start again after full reset but need to get back to normal after this frustrating experience.

Not sure what Garmin customer service will say if I will ask them to reset the watch to brand new condition without any updates as I bought it, if no luck.

Have a pleasant trip to England. :-)

  • Hello. I am sorry to hear you are having trouble with this. I would love to help investigate this further. Please feel free to reach out to me via Private Message.

  • The best to update or install new maps is to use computer, cable and Garmin Express.
It works fast and without any issues, tested on MAC and Windows PC.

WiFI update for maps is slow and very often fails.

  • Please read with understanding... after connecting to a PC, the GarminExpress program does not detect updates - after connecting to the charger, the watch automatically connects to wifi and DETECTS newer versions, tries to download them and ends with an error

  • If so, connect your watch to PC, delete installed maps using Garmin Express, disconnect, reconnect again and instal maps you want to have installed.

Also checking on the watch in Map Manager are any of these maps marked as ready to update.
    If so, cancel that selection.

  • Hi. The MK3i charger is a USB C and my MacBook does not have a USB C port (yes it is old). Any suggestions on how I can connect it to my MacBook so I can use Garmin Express? Thank you very much.
