Fenix 5S for a man

I admit it, I have small wrists. I've worn the 42mm (the larger size) of the Apple Watch and I think it looks like the right size for me so I am thinking the 5S will be the best choice (42 also vs 47/51 for the 5/5X) for me. For a watch I would wear most the time and likely even at night the smaller size brings advantages in weight too, any other men thinking to get the 5S? The Garmin site makes such a big deal over the 5S being their new design for women that it gives me pause but I think that many mens watches are 42mm or even smaller in the real world...
  • I have an Apple Watch series 2 SS version that's 42mm in size and it's to small in my opinion.. Others may disagree but I'd love to see Apple offer a larger size...

Lots of men have small wrists, or are like myself simply don't like something big/heavy flopping around on my wrist (heck I don't even like long sleeves). Huge watches also tend to end up getting pinched during some activities for me like mountain/DH biking, gym workouts.

DCR's pictures are great, because laying them all out side by side really shows the size differences, where the shots with them on the wrist tend to be misleading.

It's a tough call, if I'm honest with myself I'm probably expecting too much from any one watch at the end of the day and it really boils down to two desires that are at odds with each other.

    1) I don't want to wear a watch the size of the 5X everyday and I'd like more smartwatch features in my daily wear watch for $600+, but I want the 5X features for activities (esp. when it's the same price as the 5/5s)

    2) I could buy a smartwatch (apple, S2 etc.) for daily wear, but I would like the full featured activity metrics during the day as well without the hassle of maintaining multiple apps/watches etc.

At the end of the day it's hard to say what I'll do. Up till now I've just stayed with a small vivosmart sized fitness watch, a normal non-smartwatch day to day, and used an edge or etrex outdoors. I might try the 5s as an everyday/fitness watch and still stay with the edge/etrex outdoors.

Currently I am on the fence to decide either 5S or 5. I like the size and design on the 5S, but the larger screen and longer battery life on the 5 would be a better choice for my life style.
47mm is not too big in my opinion, but I wish the bezel design could be the same as the 5S.

    This!
If the 5 had the same bezel design, I'd probably get it over the 5S. I'm going to start with the 5S and see if I can tolerate the battery life. If I can't I'll exchange it for a 5.

I had the 3HR for about 8 months and really loved it until I started seeing issues with the altimeter and returned it. To be honest I'm wondering if it will be wise to go for another Fenix after the issues I had with the 3HR and lack of response from the company for so long, but...anyway...getting off topic.

I remember a break in period with the 3HR where I wasn't too thrilled about the size and weight, but got used to it after a while for the most part. After returning it, I went back to my old Suunto X6HR, and immediately loved just how light it was. It does have a more rounded design than the 3HR, and some of the dimensions are a little smaller, but going from the 86g 3HR to the 56g Suunto just felt awesome. That being said, I was definitely leaning towards the 5, and would really like the additional battery life, but if the 5S is going to be 20g lighter, then for me aside from it also being smaller, the lighter body is a big reason why I may end up with the 5S! I'm a 5'8" male with pretty small wrists and see no reason to see the 5S as a women's watch.
  • A lot of good points here but one that hasn't been made I think is the width to thickness ratio. 42 over 14.5 could look/feel a bit "unbalanced" compared to 47/15.5 as I've seen that problem with "normal" watches. Many 7750 chronos for instance work ok in 45/15 but a 42/13 three hander (a springdrive) watch will look/feel a bit odd.

Also what bothers me about the 5S (besides the lower res and screen size) is that looking at DCR's pics the lugs stick out quite a bit and I'm not sure the diameter tells the whole story, they should really be quoting the lug to lug length too. Has anyone seen actual numbers for that ?

That's a matter of taste but I prefer the cleaner look of the 5s' bezel, are the "screws" really needed on the 5
  • Need more 5S band options!

I was undecided between the 5 and 5S but those DCR photos seals it for the 5s for me. However I'll still be waiting until at least June before making the purchase. The wrist shots were perfect since it looks like Ray's wrists are only a bit larger than mine.

I've got the silver bezel on my F3 and will go the same route with the F5S, just hope that at some point they'll come out with the slate grey band that they show for the F5 for the 5S.

I hope so too. I am leaning toward the 5S as the everyday watch to replace my VSHR/F3 "system", but more metal band options would really seal the deal. Not much of a champagne color band guy. Black? Silver? Slate? Come on, Garmin!

I've got to believe that more options are coming (for the Fenix 3 they certainly did and the new "Quick Fit" design seems to suggest that Garmin is going to go after the lucrative swappable band market ala Apple Watch). I also believe you will see many inexpensive 3rd party options in time.

That said PLEASE GARMIN lets see a black metal band for the sapphire black 5S... the 5S is classic men's watch size and I too want a metal band option and the champaign color is not it.
  • Can't say that I find the "shiny" bezel of the 5s very manly, not to mention that it's likely to be prone to rather visible "dents"...
  • I don't need a watch to make me feel "manly" IMO the bezel of the 5S is simple and elegant. I like the design of my F3, but I find the screws and overall designs a little over the top.
