I will not respond to the “gaslighting” framing or the cultural generalizations. That does not help this discussion further. My point is simple. There is a difference between aggregated reports and consistent real-world use, and that difference matters when judging how a product performs in practice. In my experience, the H1/H1i does not match the extreme description you use. It has clear limitations, and it is not for everyone, but it is not a “disaster” in actual use. We are clearly using different types of evidence and weighting them differently. Because of that, I don’t see value in continuing this discussion.

Forum Post: RE: Micro SD card problems

I already have the edge explore 2. That was the device I was looking to upgrade back then. I waited months to see if the h1i would become available, then to see if they would update it to make it functional. I eanted something with a clearer screen, something that had more than a power button, lap button and start button. Something with more storage, and something thst could update maps without a computer. The problem with the old edge explore 2 is that it only has very little memory that makes it certain I will need to update/replace the maps going anywhere, but it meant I couldn't update the maps without a computer. It was also sluggish, to be frank Then a battery bug appeared on the ee2 after an update, and I decided it was time to make a choice. I decided to give garmin one last chance to deliver, and I opted for the 850 because it had most of the things I wanted (better than the 1050 as the 850 has functional buttons). But back to the h1i: I can read. It is called research. It means I can make an informed choice, and I can tell when Garmin is gaslighting. I don't need to buy it to tell. Just like I don't need to buy a mildewed, rotten house with a sagging roof i order to know that it won't work for actually living in. The notion that my garmin comment comes acress as "emotional" is whst is wrong. Anericans think that anger about anything is bad, and that unless you pepper crticism with praise, it should be dismissed. There is a reason that companies in the US get away with anything they want to. The very notion that I have to buy a product as well as not being angry when I see corporate gaslighting is asinine. Why should I support them by buying a sub par product? And why on earth should I then also be nice to them when they gaslight you to your face? They are not being nice to their customers - neither present nor potential by blatantly attempting to gaslight everyone.

Forum Post: RE: Micro SD card problems

I think it’s worth pointing out that not having used the H1/H1i Plus yourself can make it harder to judge how these issues play out in real-world use. From my own experience, the device definitely has its faults and I wouldn’t recommend it to everyone. That said, I haven’t encountered boot loops, the screen has been perfectly usable for my needs, and the 64GB internal storage has been more than sufficient. It’s also been working reliably with my SD card. So while it may not be the right fit for every use case, describing the H1/H1i as a “disaster” feels too broad based on what I’ve seen. The comments about Garmin support also come across as more emotional than constructive, which doesn’t really help move the discussion forward. Based on what you’re looking for, you might also want to consider the Garmin Edge Explore 2. It’s more geared toward touring and navigation rather than training and performance features. It’s relatively affordable and supports inReach Remote. The trade-offs are that it doesn't have full button control, doesn’t support SD cards, and has 16GB of internal storage.

Forum Post: RE: Micro SD card problems

I am saying you that decided to buy it despite the short comings are correct in your surmising that this SD card problem is not the problem for individual users but general problems with the device, and that Garmin's response in this thread shows just how idiotic they have become. It is the device itself that has systemic problems on a basic level, not the setting of individual users. I reacted to the quite frankly snotty response from Garmin. But, yes, the SD cards, bootloops, bricking and so on had me go from preparing to buy a h1i then a h1, then an etrex touch, only to find none of rhem worked even partially for my very basic use. I mean, I do not "train", I don't have bike sensors or heart rate sensors., I don't even have a tempe sensor anymore. I don't do "group rides" and whatever else the 850 offers for roadies, training, health monitoring etc All that is turned off by me. I still would like to "reverse" my purchase of the edge 850 I bought instead and go buy a working h1i plus. But with the response from garmin coupled with the lackluster product that is the h1i plus/h1, and the inability of the etrex touch to pair with an inreach mini 3), that won't be happening. At least the edge 850 functions, has a bright and clear screen, doesn't boot loop, pairs with an inreach, and so on. I wanted the h1i plus because it had so much potential, and the hardware with built-in proper buttons, and so on would have been great for my use when touring. I am an amputee, so I don't hike anymore unless in stretches where it is impossible to ride my bike. But the screen is dim, it bootloops, the storage is abysmal considering it probably won't work with cards larger than 32GB, and even then, I may have to pull it and reinserting it constantly. So, yes, the h1i/h1 is a disaster of a product for a long list of reasons - not helped by the snotty replies from Garmin in this thread; trying to make it seem like this is a problem with the user's choices and settings, and not something systemic. My new edge 850 was bought over the h1i to see if it actualy worked. It does. It has buttons (It can actually be used without touching the screen). It has a clear screen. It has 64gb of memory that works, and although I wish it had a card slot, I am thankful it doesn't considering the h1i problems. It can pair with an inreach mini 2 (will probably upgrade the mini 2 to a mini 3), and it doesn't boot loop. Maybe the h1i and etrex touch crew should talk to the edge crew. And write some actual good firmware for the card slot hardware. Oh the things they would learn.

Forum Post: RE: Micro SD card problems

[quote userid="2065863" url="~/outdoor-recreation/inreach/f/gpsmap-h1i-plus/434707/micro-sd-card-problems/2027583"]This, as well as the plethora of other bugs is why I ditched the notion of buying the h1i plus/h1/etrex touch. I've tried two equal sized cards of different brands and one of them is not recognized when the device is powered on, but only when the SD card is removed and reinserted while the H1 is turned on. Both my Windows PC and MacBook recognize the card perfectly when using a card reader. The other card works without issues with my H1. Others have reported similar issues, see here . For example, behavior can differ between 32GB (typically FAT32) and larger cards (exFAT), or even between cards of the same size from different manufacturers. Gathering that information helps us identify patterns—especially in cases like this where the issue may depend on when the card is inserted or how the device is interacting with it. If you plug in your device to the computer while the card is still inserted in the device, this can help in determining where the issue lies: Device is seen, but the inserted card isn't: Typically this points to the card reader in the device not functioning and the best option may be to exchange the device. However, it's best to try an alternative card, if possible, to rule that out. Device and inserted card are both seen: Typically this means the device is having trouble interacting with the current card. If possible, try an alternative card to rule that out. You can also try to insert the card after the device is powered on to see if that allows it to work. What I can confirm now is that for this GPSMAP H1 device, it can recognize almost all brands of memory cards with a capacity of 32GB or less, regardless of whether they contain official or third-party maps, and regardless of the format being FAT32 or exFAT. However, as soon as the memory card capacity exceeds 32GB, whether it's 64GB, 128GB or even larger, the device is very likely to fail to recognize it. It's hilarious that this device claims to support up to 1TB memory cards. Didn't you do any tests before launching it to the market? I have two SanDisk memory cards, both 32GB, and they can be recognized whether inserted before or after startup. But for that 128GB card, if inserted before startup, it won't be recognized after startup; if inserted after startup, the device will freeze and I have to long press the power button to force a restart. The issue of the 128GB card causing a freeze when inserted after startup was recognized before the V9.05 firmware update, but after the update to V9.05, it would freeze when inserted after startup. In another thread ( forums.garmin.com/.../micro-sd-cards---so-which-ones-actually-do-work ), the bug issue regarding memory card support for the GPSMAP H1 has been discussed for several months. This is the official forum of Garmin, yet there hasn't been a single reply from an official customer service representative?
