The behavior is intermittent—sometimes the email includes the location links to the web correctly, and other times it does not. I’m including screenshots showing the email and the failed web page.

Is this a known GPS location issue, or is there a setting/configuration that could cause the location information to be omitted from the check-in email?

Yes, everything is enabled, but I went ahead checked anyway.

Same things happened yesterday. Some of the Check-In emails showed my location, and sometimes not.

Log into the Garmin Explore website.

Select ACCOUNT.

Scroll down the page to SMS Message Configuration.

Check the first two boxes for "Include my latitude and longitude as text in the message" and "Include a link to an online map with the location of my message" to include location.

If you are certian that is, and has remained enabled, I would review the guidance here: https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=VixYRxXuOf4VwcvpylRDzA

What Happens When There is Poor GPS Signal or No GPS Signal?

SMS will still be sent, but may not provide the location or may show an inaccurate location if there is poor or no GPS signal. At times, it may not include a location link at all.

Email should always include a location link, but may not show a location or may return an error that the location is not available if there is poor or no GPS signal.

My devices and software versions are:

inReach Mini 2: software 5.04 (19P)

Enduro 3: software 22.38

Recipients are using the Garmin Messenger app

My phone was completely powered off during all satellite tests

I performed several repeatable A/B tests using the fixed Check-In messages. The message text and recipients had already been configured, so no recipient was selected at the time of sending.

Test 1: Enduro 3 inReach Remote, no activity running

I opened inReach Remote on the Enduro 3 and sent a Check-In message while the watch was not recording an activity.

The message was successfully transmitted through the inReach Mini 2 by satellite and received in Garmin Messenger.

However, the received message did not contain a location icon or coordinates.

I repeated this test more than once and obtained the same result.

Test 2: Check-In sent directly from the inReach Mini 2

I sent the same Check-In message directly from the Mini 2.

The received message included the location correctly.

On one attempt, the Mini 2 displayed a weak GPS signal warning and asked whether I wanted to wait for a location before sending. After waiting for the GPS position, the message was transmitted with location data.

Test 3: Enduro 3 inReach Remote during an active GPS activity

I started a GPS activity such as Walking on the Enduro 3 and waited for the watch to acquire GPS.

While the activity was running, I opened the inReach data page and sent the same Check-In message through inReach Remote.

In this case, the message received in Garmin Messenger did include the location.

Summary of the results

Enduro 3 inReach Remote with no activity running:
Message sent successfully, but no location included.

Check-In sent directly from the Mini 2:
Message sent successfully with location included.

Enduro 3 inReach Remote during an active GPS activity:
Message sent successfully with location included.

This behavior appears very similar to the issue discussed several years ago in this thread:

forums.garmin.com/.../1398528

It appears possible that when a Check-In is initiated through inReach Remote while no watch activity is running, the Mini 2 sends the message immediately without obtaining or waiting for a current GPS fix.

I cannot yet confirm whether the location attached during an active Enduro 3 activity comes from the watch itself, or whether the active state simply causes the Mini 2 to obtain or retain a valid GPS position. However, the difference is repeatable.

Could Garmin please try to reproduce this using the following conditions?

inReach Mini 2 software 5.04 (19P)

Enduro 3 software 22.38

Fixed Check-In message

Phone completely powered off

Message sent from inReach Remote outside an activity

Same message sent from inReach Remote during an active GPS activity

Same message sent directly from the Mini 2

This has a safety impact. A user may reasonably believe that a Check-In message sent from the watch includes their current location, while the recipient actually receives only the message text.

If no valid location is available, the watch or Mini 2 should either wait for a GPS fix or clearly warn the user that the message will be sent without location data.

Coordinates with Preset Messages using inReach remote

I am on the SOS plan and tracking send interval is set to "never". "Activity Recording" is set to "Normal". It seems these two settings will power the GPS chip up every 10 minutes to get a fix and store it as a point. If I want to send a preset message with coordinates the units tells me generally bad signal (as the satellite fix is expired) and asks if I want to wait for better reception. If I agree, after the next GPS fix is acquired the message gets send with coordinates. All great and perfect to save battery life.

However, if under the same circumstances I use my Gamrin Instinct watch as an inReach remote to send the preset message, it always gets send is right away without coordinates. The choice to wait for the next fix to add coordinates to the message should be a setting that is missing.

I did set "Activity Recording" to "High Detail" and as the GPS chip is always on preset messages from the inReach remote then generally get the coordinates attached. However, this wastes a lot of battery.

Does anyone know a work around to ensure preset messages always get send with coordinates?

RE: Coordinates with Preset Messages using inReach remote

I am seeing what appears to be the same issue again, possibly a regression introduced by a later software update.

My setup:

inReach Mini 2 software: 5.04 (19P)

Enduro 3 software: 22.38

Garmin Messenger app used by the recipients

Phone completely powered off during the satellite tests

I performed several A/B tests with the fixed Check-In messages, where the message text and recipients are configured in advance.

Test 1: Sent from Enduro 3 using inReach Remote, with no activity running

The message was successfully transmitted by satellite and received in Garmin Messenger, but no location icon or coordinates were included.

I repeated this more than once with the same result.

Test 2: Sent directly from the inReach Mini 2

The same Check-In message included the location correctly.

On one attempt, the Mini 2 displayed a weak GPS signal warning and asked whether I wanted to wait for a location before sending. After waiting, the message was sent with its location.

Test 3: Sent from Enduro 3 while a GPS activity was running

I started an activity such as Walking on the Enduro 3, waited for the watch to acquire GPS, and then sent the same Check-In message through the inReach page inside the activity.

In this case, the messages received in Garmin Messenger did include the location.

So my current results are:

Enduro 3 inReach Remote, no activity running: message sent, no location

Mini 2 directly: message sent with location

Enduro 3 inReach Remote during an active GPS activity: message sent with location

This looks very similar to the issue originally reported in this thread several years ago. It appears that, when the message is initiated through inReach Remote outside an activity, the Mini 2 may send immediately without first obtaining or waiting for a current GPS fix.

I cannot yet confirm whether the location included during an active Enduro 3 activity comes from the watch or whether the activity state simply causes the Mini 2 to obtain a valid fix before sending. However, the behavior is repeatable on my devices.

Could Garmin please confirm whether this old issue has returned in the current software versions and try to reproduce it using:

inReach Mini 2 5.04 (19P)

Enduro 3 22.38

fixed Check-In message

phone powered off

inReach Remote used both outside and inside an active GPS activity

For safety reasons, a Check-In message sent from the watch should either include a current location or clearly warn the user that no location will be attached.

It appears that, when the message is initiated through inReach Remote outside an activity, the Mini 2 may send immediately without first obtaining or waiting for a current GPS fix.

inReach Mini 2 5.04 (19P)

Enduro 3 22.38

fixed Check-In message

phone powered off

inReach Remote used both outside and inside an active GPS activity

I tested this with two different contacts:

Both contacts received my messages successfully by SMS.

Both replied directly in the same SMS conversation from the Garmin relay number, without saving it as a contact.

Neither reply appeared in the Garmin Messenger app or on my inReach device.

They tested replies in both English and Hebrew, using plain text without emojis.

I manually performed Sync Messages, but the replies still did not arrive.

I also completed the built-in test with testinreach@garmin.com. The test worked correctly, and I received the automated response, so the device can send and receive Garmin test messages.

Pairing Zumo XT and Mini 2 connection is not retained

I have a Zumo XT and a Mini 2 inReach. I set the plan to suspend at the end of that month, and the device was powered off.

Now, the Explore website shows my plan status as suspended, but the device still shows "inReach Enabled Plan | SOS included" in the plan details page.

When I tell it to update plan info, it just gets stuck showing "Waiting for response" even though I left it outside with a sky view for over 30 minutes. I even tried rebooting it outdoors again and it goes into the same state when I ask it to update plan details.

It is syncing with the Explore mobile app. It just performed the 5.04 firmware update earlier today.

I do not use the Messenger app and have no intention to (do not want this linkage to phone numbers etc.) I have used it since day 1 with the Explore app and the Explore website where I enrolled the plan originally.

I also do not have a PC to run Garmin Express.

What I was hoping to find out was whether it would indicate "Suspended plan | SOS included" now as per the recent announcements. I am not sure if that is possible until the next time I resume service and suspend again though. I just don't understand why the device will not update to realize it is suspended...

RE: Pairing Zumo XT and Mini 2 connection is not retained

Hello 8038338 Garmin is aware of a concern with the InReach remote connection not reconnecting after powercycle. A solution has not been found for this concern at this time. It would be absurd if it needs the app to be present to send the SOS.

But, I think it is also pretty stupid that they have tied this to the new Messenger app. Why can't the Explore app do whatever is needed to sync the right settings to the device?

I've never had any interest in the Messenger app. I don't want my inReach messaging in anyway tied or conflated with my mobile phone number. I don't want to be part of their marketing network to try to trick recipients into installing the Messenger app. I don't want recipients accidentally trying and abandoning the Messenger app, and as a result being unable to receive SMS from the regular inReach SMS gateway.

RE: Device "waiting for response" does not know plan is suspended

I read this as that the Mini 2 needs to have synced with the Messenger app in order to have the Suspend with SOS plan available on the device.

Not that you need to be paired with the Messenger app when triggering an SOS. Garmin - LF can you confirm this?

RE: Device "waiting for response" does not know plan is suspended

This is disappointing, if you are confirming that the SOS while suspended is only possible with the Messenger app. Why can't the Explore app sync whatever is necessary here? It supports the firmware update and other function of the inReach Mini 2, including reading and sending messages.
