I have a number of country maps, although I have yet to try the H1 in other countries, so I guess it might ‘auto select’ ?!

[Garmin H1] Can't find waypoints GPX in my computer's Garmin folder when connected with USB

Hello all,

my company just purchased a new Garmin H1 and I'm getting acquainted with it. Since it'll be shared with different work colleagues, transferring saved waypoints through USB instead of Garmin Explore is much more practical. However, when I connect the device to my computer, I can't find the saved waypoints. They aren't in the GPX folder, Locations, Activities, NewFiles... They're nowhere. I can sync the points to my Garmin Explore account and get the GPX from there, so they exist and aren't corrupted. Why can I not find them in the GARMIN folder?

[GPSMAP H1] Waypoint app stuck on waypoint averaging screen

Hello all,

I just booted up the device for the first time and am getting to know it. I want to mark waypoints with "waypoint averaging" but when the averaging finishes I don't know how to go back to the initial waypoint screen. When the averaging reaches 100%, I click on "done", then click on the arrow on the upper left, but that brings me back to the apps menu (with map, compass, settings, etc.). If I click "mark waypoint" again, I'm taken to the waypoint averaging screen. How can I mark new waypoints after using "waypoint averaging"?

"Off Course" Data Field - Does It Work For You?

I've been using the H1 for 3 months now, a couple of times a week.

Throughout all the firmware updates, I have never got this data field working properly.

I get a variety of behaviours. Most common is it appears for the first few minutes then just shows no data for the rest of the hike. Sometimes it just never shows any data, even at the start of a hike. Once, it showed no data until the last five minutes of a hike. Has always worked perfectly on 66 and 67.

I've opened a case with Garmin but they can't reproduce the issue. So, I'm interested if this data field works for other people. Good or bad, I'd like to hear what your experience is.

Device reset when search for a POI by typing a name in Bulgarian

2. Added Bulgarian keypad language and enabled the quick language change icon

3. Both maps are enabled.

5. Device reset as soon as a search lens icon is pressed after the name had been typed in

6. After booting up, the Bulgarian language is missing from the keyboard language list

H1 Navigation Prompts

I recently purchased a H1 and before powering on the unit I updated firmware to the latest 12.08 version.

I had a route that I had built using komoot and I had simply exported this and then imported this onto Garmin Connect to get it onto the device. I started the course on my H1 with Routing switched off as it's my understanding that if I turn this on then the device will try and navigate me around areas where there is no visible paths on the map and since I was planning to walk through some woodland I didn't want the device to do this.

I also didn't want the annoying sat nav women voice talking constantly because I had a fairly good idea where I was going. I headed out and when I reached a turn I would here a tone on the h1 and also a system message would appear which showed the message Approaching Point. I navigated through the route and sometimes if I was unsure about a turn after hearing the tone I would check the map and I was happy with this way of navigating.

On the final leg of the trip I started to find the alert message fairly annoying as it would basically bring up a pop-up which you had to click OK to to get rid off quickly and it would block the screen if you were looking at the map so I was looking through the settings to see how you could turn this off. I remember ending up in the proximity settings and I toggled this off and then continued on my route to then hear a tone. With no visible turn I looked at the device to see a message that I was off course.

I had missed a turn because there was no notification tone so reset the proximity settings and walked back to the course, I got a message that I was on course and heard the tone. Started walking again but this time kept the device out as I could see a 90 degree turn coming up in a few minutes. Got to the turn and there was no notifications, no tones, nothing. I stopped navigating and reloaded the course, started walking again and waited for another turn and again no notification.

I looked through all of the settings and I couldn't find anything related as to why the navigation tones had stopped working and I spent a number of hours trying to figure this out and even resorted to using AI but that was an annoying experience because it kept providing me with instructions for the GPSMAP 67 even though I asked it not to do this. Anyway decided to reach out to Garmin support.

I get the impression that the support guys are aware that this device is fairly crap as the solution offered pretty much straight away was to reset the device. I did this but opted to not connect it to my phone or wifi as I figured that these kinds of devices most likely store setting files in the cloud. I copied my route over via USB and tested again and everything was back to normal and I could hear the navigation tones when coming up to a turn.

Figured the issue was resolved and waited for a day to try and get my local settings file to become the primary file and not get overwritten by whatever was stored in the cloud. Connected my phone again as I want to be able to get routes onto the device without having to plug it in and started my route again and from the start the navigation tones were not working.

Clearly the settings stored in the cloud had taken priority and had overwritten the settings on the device. I did ask Garmin support about this and I was told that when I was adding the device using garmin explore I would be given a prompt about if I wanted to restore the settings or not. This turned out not to be true so I am guessing the support guy just didn't want to help the latest idiot to buy one of these devices and told me some BS to get rid of me. I went through all of the settings again and I couldn't see what the problem is or any difference to what the settings were before.

One observation I have found while using the device which I think is fairly poor is why there seems to be a settings menu and then if you press the magnifier at the bottom right then then allows you to access the same settings but then with additional extra settings listed. Why not just have everything in one place? it's fairly confusing I kind of found it by accident because in here you can find a setting for turn warnings which I have turned on but in the settings you enter just by clicking settings on the main menu this option does not appear. The navigation settings should also be included under the main settings menu also rather than hidden away.

Another observation is why the device allows you to walk about 250-300 meters off course before notifying you that you're off course. Surely a more sensible figure would be around 50 meters and there should be a setting for this also in the options so you can configure how soon you will be notified, maybe there is but it's just hidden away under some random menu that I haven't discovered yet.

My final observation is that the odometer does not work on my device, it's been stuck at 6.24 miles even though I have walked about 55 miles this week and that's after the reset. I think there are two fields for this one which reads zero and another one which is trip odometer and that's stuck at 6.24 miles. I ain't to bothered about this as I don't care about stats anyway but it's just something I noticed as I didn't bother reconfiguring the dashboard after resetting as I figured I would most likely end up resetting the device again anyway so it was there by default.

If I go to my route and enable routing I see the calculating thing and then the annoying sat nav women starts talking. I have also noticed that in my courses list I will see that some have been duplicated I assume this is because when I have enabled routing the route as been modified to stick to known paths or maybe it's just adding extra information into the file so it knows where the turns are.

Either way I would much rather have 100% confidence that the route I am following is the one I created and not one that a computer has decided to take me around because it's considered a popular route based on heat maps or whatever and additionally I would love to have my annoying system message pop ups back because I really can't stand the sat nav women's voice.

I am using the talkytoaster maps which are routable, sorry Garmin but your base & premium maps are rubbish in the UK. The same issue applies no matter which map is used.

I have tried unregistering the device from my account and waiting a day in hopes that the local settings will overwrite those stored in the cloud.
I have tried toggling off sync with garmin explore before pairing with my phone but this still resulted in my settings being overwritten and I could only see that waypoints and courses were not transferred.
I have sound on, I hear tone when I am 250+ meters off course!
Under Turn warnings I have early turn warning: Time alert & Final Turn Warning: Distance Alert.
I have Course Transitions set to AUTO i did try manual but I think the setting just controls the compass.
Nav. Prompts is turned on under Sounds & Vibration
On Garmin Connect I have made sure that when importing a route I have selected Hike and I have made sure that Turn Notifications are turned on.
I have tried creating a route using Hiiker, same issue.
I have tried creating a route using garmin explore, same issue.
I have tried creating a route using basecamp, same issue.

Does anyone know how I can get these turn tones back or how I can overwrite the settings stored in the cloud with those from a device that has been reset?

Bug: Specifying waypoint as new Weather Location now requires additional step of selecting location

To reproduce:

1. Go to the Weather app, and then select "Weather Locations". As with older firmware versions, you'll see a list of your current Weather Locations.

2. Select "New Location". As with older firmware versions, you'll have a variety of options for creating new Weather Locations.

3. Select "Waypoints". As with older firmware versions, you'll see a list of your Waypoints.

4. Select the Waypoint you wish to turn into a Weather Location. Unlike older firmware versions, you're now brought to a map and asked to Select Location. This seems -- in my opinion at least -- to be unnecessary. If you wanted to select the weather location from a map, you should have selected "Use Map" instead of "Waypoints" back in Step 3.

5. Unlike older firmware versions, the default name for the new Weather Location created from a Waypoint is the Lat / Long. It used to be the Waypoint name. This is hugely inconvenient.

Recalculating

My GPS is acting up when it tries to recalculate my route. It keeps trying to drag me back to the exact spot where I missed a turn, or sometimes even all the way back to my starting point! updating of maps+ maps causes the delete of all layers

Version 12.08,

when accidentally updating an outdoor maps+ map, without that anything has changed to that map, it causes that all layers within that map will be deleted.

From the map manager - choose outdoor maps+ - select an existing map - below the map select edit (BTW the field can only be touched, no access by keys) - here you can add new may layers. IF YOU UPDATE without adding new layers, all existing layers will be deleted. Message "Deleting maps from ....(name of the map). What a pity, You may have to upload tmore that a GB of data again.

I’m all about custom maps (Ones that I import through the sd-card) and features for the H1i that make it more capable like the ability to play music would-be/is amazing.

They should allow for video to be played as well like if I have a video on my SD-card I should be able to play it.

I want to be able to look at documents like pdf’s etc (some maps I own are historical and in PDF format and etc).

Note: There is a touchscreen bug where if your password contains the number “0”. You have to tap the keypad “0” button at the top of it. Otherwise it won’t register if you for example tap the down of the button. (The bottom hand is probably stealing its touch’s our has a bounding box that overlaps. The bug has been there for a long time.

Waypoint symbol filtering blocks finding waypoints with other symbols

nice that waypoints can not be filtered in the save app. However, when using the find button to search for waypoints, you see only waypoints with this waypoint symbol. Example: you filter in the save app for waypoints with a hotel symbol, Then you see only all the waypoints with the same hotel symbol. So far, so good.

Now select one, and try to find your other waypoints near the hotel. Hit find, select saved, select waypoints (or first choose searching near recent finds for trip planning) then you see nothing else than the waypoints with the hotel symbol, no restaurants or whatever you saved nearby the hotel. In the find app you can not disable the filter. You first have to go back to the saved app to disable the filter for symbols.

Expected behavior: the filter for symbols, should only be applicable within the saved app.

Als ik een koers wandel en afwijk van de route dan wordt je telkens terug gestuurd naar het punt waar je route hebt verlaten. Dit is sinds software versie 12.06, voorheen navigeerde het toestel naar een logisch punt op route. Het herberekenen duurt ook erg lang.

Op deze manier is de koers eigenlijk niet te volgen, je kan herberekenen uitzetten, maar dat vind ik nu juist één van de handigste dingen bij het navigeren. Graag oplossen bij een volgende update.

Micro SD Card appears and disappears

Something I noticed... I formatted and installed a Sandisk Ultra 256GB Class 10 U1 card, and my H1i plus recognizes it. I was able to transfer maps to the SD with Base Camp and Garmin Express. I noticed in the Map Manager when I turned on the H1i the SDcard did not appear, so I popped the card out and back in while the device is on, and reappeared.

Trouble Sending

Sometimes when I pick up the H1 and unlock it, there is a notification that immediately displays that reads “Trouble Sending”. What does this mean? This happens when I’m not even using the H1, sitting on my desk. It has happened with the WiFi and Bluetooth on or off, low power mode messaging. I feel like the battery drains fast when never I see this pops up.

is “sending” the communication with the gps satellite or something else, can whatever it’s sending be turned off temporarily? I’ve looked through the settings and I haven’t come across anything that could be related to the notification.

What happened to the H1 series v12.06 firmware update release "sticky"?

Additional apps in App list after activity change

Seems to be an issue introduced with 12.06: when switching activity type, the App list contains additional “apps” that appear to be shortcuts to items in the setup menu. Power cycling the device restores the original app list.

GPSMAP H1 firmware 11.07 does not recognize SanDisk Extreme Pro 128GB microSDXC, while 32GB card works

Hi,

I am experiencing a reproducible microSD card compatibility issue with a Garmin GPSMAP H1 running software version 11.07.

According to Garmin’s specifications, the GPSMAP H1 supports microSD cards up to 1 TB, so a 128 GB microSDXC card should be supported.

Device

Garmin GPSMAP H1
Software version: 11.07

Card that is NOT recognized

SanDisk Extreme Pro microSDXC
Capacity: 128 GB
The card itself works normally on my Mac and is fully readable/writable there.

Card that IS recognized

SanDisk Extreme Pro
Capacity: 32 GB
This card is detected correctly by the same GPSMAP H1.

This comparison strongly suggests that the microSD slot itself is functioning.

Formatting/tests performed with the 128 GB card

The card was initially formatted on macOS using Disk Utility.
File system: exFAT
Partition scheme: Master Boot Record (MBR)
The physical card and partition were verified in macOS Disk Utility.
Terminal output confirmed an FDisk_partition_scheme / MBR partition table.
The card was correctly mounted and accessible on the Mac with approximately 127.97 GB capacity.
I then reformatted the card again using the official SD Memory Card Formatter from the SD Association, using Overwrite Format, to rule out a macOS formatting issue.
After formatting, the card was properly ejected from macOS.
The GPSMAP H1 was powered off before inserting the card, and then powered on again.
The 128 GB card is still not detected.

Behaviour on the GPSMAP H1

With the 128 GB card inserted:

The device boots normally and does not indicate that a memory card has been detected.
Under Map Manager → Outdoor Maps+ → New Map, only Name and the available map layers are shown.
There is no “Storage Location” option.
Pressing the MENU button on that screen returns “No options”.

With the 32 GB SanDisk Extreme Pro card inserted, the device recognizes the card correctly.

Garmin Express test

I also connected the GPSMAP H1 to my Mac with the 128 GB card installed and opened Garmin Express.

The GPSMAP H1 itself is detected and connected correctly.

However, under the Removable Media tab, Garmin Express displays the message asking me to install removable media in the Garmin device. In other words, Garmin Express does not see the inserted 128 GB card either.

This means the 128 GB card is not merely unavailable to Outdoor Maps+; it appears that the GPSMAP H1 does not detect the card at all.

Summary

I have found other reports in this forum describing very similar behaviour with larger microSDXC cards, including reports specifically involving SanDisk Extreme Pro 128 GB cards.

Could Garmin please confirm whether this is a known compatibility or firmware issue with the GPSMAP H1?

Since Garmin officially specifies support for microSD cards up to 1 TB, I would also like to know:

Is the SanDisk Extreme Pro 128 GB supposed to be supported?
Is there a known issue with certain SDXC controllers or cards larger than 32 GB?
Is Garmin currently working on a firmware fix?
Is there any additional diagnostic information or log file I can provide?

I can also provide screenshots from macOS Disk Utility, Terminal, Garmin Express, and the device menus if useful.

Map screen laggy

Sometimes the map screen is very laggy when I pan or zoom the map and sometimes it’s very quick and works wonderfully. It doesn’t matter which map I use or if the detail is low or high and fast or normal speed. I’ve rebooted that doesn’t seem to do a quick fix to clear memory, I don’t have anything running either. Is this normal behavior due to the state lite strength? I have plenty of free storage room on the device and I even installed 256gb sd card. Running latest software. Does any have any thoughts?

FEEDBACK AND IDEAS FOR GPSMAP H1

Background
As an enthusiastic collector of local names in Norwegian mountains, I have for many years used a Magellan handheld gps unit to bring with me a selection of names as waypoints and to make new registrations. The total number of stored waypoints has typically been 2-3000. Magellan has given me an easy and reliable import functionality for GPX files, by copy and paste to the device disk. Each file is by Magellan handled as a separate entity in the unit: visualization can be turned on/off, each individual file can be deleted from the unit. New waypoints can be stored separately or together with old data and then easily copied back from the unit’s disk to a pc. Having physically exhausted the on/off button on my old device, I was forced to buy a new gps. I landed on Garmin GPSMAP H1i Plus, which appeared to be a top model with large storage capacity.

Garmin Experience
My first Garmin experience has not been positive: I find documentation partly incorrect, partly incomplete. Use of Garmin Explore to transfer data is close to useless, slow and unreliable. In lack of proper documentation, I was forced to perform experiments, and for some reason or other, the interface of my Garmin unit started to freeze in what seemed to be arbitrary dialogs. This is now a support case.. The problem may seem to have been resolved by a total reinstalllation of everything on the unit, so this may of course have been caused by my experimentation. The support case is not my goal to address here, but is relevant background for why better documentation and functionality are important and required.

Battery status
The first thing I was looking for on the new unit, was the battery status as a number. Not available, and I had to install a third-party widget. Disappointing and a poor first impression!

Documentation
The initial description of folder locations in the page «File Types» is incomplete and ambiguous:
• The folder GARMIN\NewFiles as target for an external copy should be clearly stated.
• The folder GPXActivities is not available before the unit has been used to create an activity in GPX format. As I was looking around on a brand new unit, this made me confused. Can easily be avoided by having an empty GPXActivities folder pre-installed.
• The folder GPXActivities seem to store only tracks, not waypoints, I expected to find new waypoints stored here or in the GPX folder. The documentation is unclear.

The page states that the device supports GPX waypoint files. This is correct in the sense that they can be imported, but only partly correct in the way data the files are further handled. This is described in more depth in the following.

The page «Transferring Files to Your Device Using a Computer» is not correct or incomplete:
• No information about where to put relevant data.
• No information about what happens with copied data.

A support document describes how GPX files can be transferred, but is incomplete:
support.garmin.com/.../
• That files are converted to fit files is correct, but tells me very little as a user.
• Imported files are deleted after conversion, but this is not described.
• Imported data are first placed in a collection called «Not synced». Following a sync with Garmin Explorer, they are added to the main collection. Vital information that should be stated.

Improvements in Garmin Explore
Synchronization appears slow and unreliable for any larger collection (> 100 waypoints). Large room for improvements!
• It should be possible to transfer collections via pc cable connection.

Synchronization appears to run continuously, and I cannot control the process: I cannot sit and wait until the slow process is finished, so I leave the tablet app open and take a long break. When I reopen the time-locked tablet, the sync process seems to start again. Who knows what happens if I interrupt the process?
• It must be possible to perform a single sync operation and then stop. The never-ending synchronization is confusing and drained the battery on my gps unit.
• It should be possible to get a report of the operation when finished, was it successful?

Synchronization of selected collections should be improved. Today, if Explore is used to select a single collection for synchronization, all other collections (except for the main) on the unit are removed. To me, this was very confusing.
• It should be possible to sync selected collections and leave all other untouched.

Waypoints can be deleted one by one in Explore but
• It should be possible to delete all or many waypoints in Explore.

Improvements in the GPS Unit
The user story here is simple and straightforward: I want to be able to easily import, store and organize a larger number of waypoints on my unit, typically 2-3000 waypoints. I want to be able to get newly added waypoints and tracks back from the unit to a pc, without having to be annoyed by the larger archive of old data.
• It should be possible to handle files added to NewFiles as individual entities, for instance by converting these to individual collections.
• It should be possible to turn visualization of data copied to NewFiles on/off, preferably data from each individual file. Can be achieved by converting each file to a collection.
• The main collection should only be used for data created by the gps, not for data copied to NewFiles. In this way, sync of new data can be done quick and easy.
• It should be possible from a Saved menu to delete all waypoints and other saved data. The current functionality is available from the System app, very hidden!
• Ideally, I should be able to do whatever Explore can do, within the gps unit: Add waypoints to a collection, remove waypoints from a collection, create new collections, delete collections.
• It should be possible to store newly created waypoints as a GPX file in a location where I can copy this back to a pc.
• Folders available for user data (NewFiles, GPXActivities?, GPX?) should be clearly marked and separated from all other folders. And these folders should be 100 % clearly documented. The current design is dangerous! Magellan has a main folder «User Data»...
The current design, where NewFiles-imported data are added to the main collection, and where newly added waypoints can only be exported from the unit through synchronization, is together killing what should be a basic user story. Very sad for an expensive device with ample storage space available.

Why no GLONASS in Auto Select satellite mode?

I noticed that when I put my H1 (fw 11.07) into All Systems + Multi-Band satellite mode, it will receive GLONASS signals (as evinced in the Satellite app). But when I set the device to Auto Select, it doesn’t seem to include GLONASS signals when Auto Select uses multi-GNSS and multi-band.

Anyone else seeing the same? Is this intentionally or a bug? I would assume that auto select (SatIQ) mode also include GLONASS (at least on the H1 as the H1i Plus doesn’t support GLONASS if I’m not mistaken). This Garmin support article also implies that GLONASS is included in All Systems + Multi-Band: support.garmin.com/.../

Auto Select (SatIQ) no longer switches from Multi-Band to Single-Band in Software 11.07

Hello,
I would like to know whether this is an intended change or a bug in software version 11.07.
My device is a GPSMAP H1i Plus.
Before updating to 11.07 (the previous firmware version), I always used Satellite = Auto Select (SatIQ).
Under open sky, after powering on the device, it would initially use Multi-Band (×2). After about one minute, it automatically switched to Single-Band to save battery power.
Since updating to 11.07, the behavior has changed.
Even under completely open sky with an excellent satellite view, the device never switches back to Single-Band. The ×2 icon remains displayed, and the Satellite page continues to show both L1 and L5 signals. I have waited more than 30 minutes, but it always remains in Multi-Band.
I have already:
• Confirmed that Satellite is set to Auto Select
• Reinstalled software 11.07
• Left the device stationary under open sky
The behavior did not change.
Before version 11.07, the device always switched back to Single-Band automatically under the same conditions.
Is this an intentional change to the SatIQ algorithm, or is it a known issue in software version 11.07?
Has anyone else observed the same behavior?

Actions Multiselect Delete Selected on Device

I need to select several actions and delete the selected only direct on the device GPSMAP H1.

I did not find a solution.

Connected over USB: thats possible with a filemanager.

Far away from a computer thats no solution.

Synchronizing (bluetooth) from a mobile with Garmin Express does not work with actions as I expect

- deleting actions in Garmin Express on the mobile any synchronizing again with the GPSMAP H1 does not work!

Synchronizing (bluetooth) from a mobile with Garmin Express works fine with tracks / routes and collections managed with Garmin Express or the GPSMAP H1.

Altimeter with Software Version 11.07

Hello,

When I read this in the changelog for software version 11.07:

“Fixed a possible issue with altimeter data during navigation,”

I was very hopeful that the altimeter would finally work while navigation is active.
So I went out for a short walk to see if the bugs had finally been fixed after so many software updates
Unfortunately, the whole thing ended very disappointingly.The device still doesn't displays the upcoming elevation profile during navigation.
Like before V11.07, the upcoming elevation profile appears for short moments and then disappears again.

To make matters worse, a new error has been added.
Even though I have muted all sounds in the system settings, the device now plays navigation prompts through the built-in speaker when I start navigation.
The only way to turn them off is to toggle the "Mute All" switch from "On" to "Off" and then back to "On."
Unfortunately, this procedure is required after each restart of the device to disable navigation prompts.

On top of that, the device crashed during my short walk after I left the route and it started recalculation.
Overall to me, version 11.07 represents a step backward compared to version 10.13.

So far, only the frequent random spikes seen in software versions before V10.13 have been fixed.
