Wound up calling tech support at Garmin and somehow, doing the same things I'd already done several times, but it finally reset, synced properly, and I now have the correct messages in the right place, thankfully. I dearly love the Garmin hardware, and its GPS functionality, but I dearly hate the endlessly unstable, bug-ridden bluetooth "functionality" that I've had to fight for years with my 67i. It's 2026, and they really should be able to do better! Still, nice lady and good help, and problem solved. For now. Yay!

As best I can tell from Garmin/Inreach sources, I should have 20 Quick Text messages that I can pre-draft and select from when texting from my 67i, and that used to work. Since they changed the plan structure, the "quick text" messages on the 67i are dumb boilerplate statements apparently provided as defaults by Garmin. I have the 20 messages prepopulated on my Iphone Explore app, but they do not sync to the device, and I cannot manually edit them on the device. Doesn't matter if I do it via USB from my laptop/website or by bluetooth from my app. Still the default choices, which are pretty useless.... Any ideas?

So did I, until the sync stopped working. Per my update, I got it working again with phone support from Garmin, and jumping through all the hoops of forgetting the device on the phone, uninstalling and reinstalling apps, etc. etc. Why Garmin can't develop and sustain a bug-free bluetooth system, I don't know. But its working again, hurray!

Hello, I've posted the question into ConnectIQ forum, they 'acknowledged' the case

I hope they will do anything with this crash as they didn't make anything beyond 'acknowledge' for another case of mine for almost 2 years

Hello

starting a CIQ application causes hard crash of the device and later its restart

the app was working flowlessy on 9.46 or older

the app uses internet connection via Explore app on mobile phone

It doesn't hurt to ask there. I think the message relates to issues with the product itself, not to Connect IQ issues in combination with a specific product.

Did you post your problem in the Connect IQ Developer forums? I think that might be a better place to get answers than a forum that's more oriented towards end users.

Please find attached source code to reproduce the problem, compile for device and run, select Track Map, it crashes at once

the exact line causing the crash is

dc.drawText(dc.getWidth().....
but even commenting out the line, the produced view is not as expected, it should look like as the screenshot of simulator
the code worked for years until FW 9.49 was released
(btw why there is simulator, when it behaves differently?)

mmadela I can understand the concern, if the watch is experiencing a crash. For this, I have some additional questions.

Is this a Garmin app, or a 3rd patty IQ app? If this is 3rd party, have you left feedback for the developer?
If this is a Garmin app, which one? Or does this occur with all?
Does the same thing occur is the IQ app is removed?

If you have not already, I would recommend trying these steps:

Powercycle the device.
Remove the app, and reinstall.

I’ve had that problem before too, though I can’t remember how it resolved itself. Some suggestions, first off is your 67i syncing at all? Maybe just try it on the Explore website. I don’t think I’ve ever used the explore app to do that. Those apps can become corrupt, so try reloading them. Try it signed out of the messenger app. Those apps are not 100% bug free, but try the explore website and don’t forget to save changes.

"Maximum number of gpx files exceeded" error

My 67i has be giving me the error "Maximum number of gpx files exceeded" when I power on the unit,. I cleared all the waypoints, recorded activities and the saved tracks and the error persisted. I also deleted all the gpx files on the SD but the error continued. I then deleted the /garmin/gpx directory on the SD card and the error went away. I still have the SD card loaded but only with the img file for the area map. I would still like to load gpx files via the SD card but I don't want this error to come back. Anyone have a solution to this issue??

This continues from the long two-year-old thread (GPS about 30m off - GPSMAP 67i - inReach - Garmin Forums) to focus on position drift that is corrected by restarting the receiver. The earlier thread became a catchall for a larger category of inaccuracies. Since the position drift issue is corrected by restarting the device, I assume that narrows the possible causes. Have firmware updates in the last two years addressed this?

I kept thinking it was user error. I'd collect a waypoint, generally to a vegetation plot location or the helicopter landing spot. When trying to navigate back to the spot on the same day, the distance to the point would be over 3 km when I knew it was only a few hundred meters.

I thought somehow I had set the GPS so it was navigating from a different waypoint rather than my current location, but couldn't find a way to do that even if I wanted. As noted in other articles, as I got close to the desired location the distance and navigation seemed to correct itself.

This tended to happen with waypoints collected in the morning, so I think there was poor satellite alignment at that time; later waypoints seemed to work okay. We had a second crew using another Garmin GPSMAP 67i and when I sent waypoints to them using the "Share Wirelessly" function the problem carried over. To the best of my knowledge, they weren't getting the same error when recording waypoints, but they tended to be collecting points later in the morning when there was perhaps better satellite alignment. But, satellite alignment doesn't explain why my teammate with Gaia GPS on an iphone was getting good locations when recording waypoints at the same time. Firmware was up to date.

I was working about 50 - 60 miles northeast of Ft. Yukon, AK. Satellite settings are Multi-GNSS with multiband on. We were not under heavy canopy - we were in a year old burn. Sites were pretty flat. When I checked the error on the satellite page, it always said 1.8 - 2 m, although I didn't check for every plot. Averaging locations when collecting the waypoints didn't seem to make much difference. I don't really trust the error estimates on the newer Garmins - preferred the way older units reported it and preferred their method for averaging locations.

When I downloaded points into ArcGIS, I had points for both the actual and the incorrect locations, both labelled with the plot number.

That's worth investigating. How far for how long was it off position? How was the error measured? Where were you? What were the satellite settings?

I'd be happy with 30 m difference - mine was off over 3 km in a remote area of Alaska this summer. I was not aware of this issue. Good thing somebody had an iphone with the Gaia GPS app installed.

Hi Barnoe you can follow the steps in our public FAQ for Uploading and Syncing GPX Files to the GPSMAP 66/67/86 Series which provides guidance for using either the Garmin Explore App or the Garmin Explore Website.

After syncing the handheld, the newly added data can be found by accessing one of the navigation options.

Press FIND.
Select Waypoints, Tracks, Courses, or Routes.
Select a waypoint, track, course, or route and select Go.

Newly added data can also be found in the main menu under Waypoint Manager, Track Manager, Course Planner, or Route Planner.

New GPSMAP 67i owner struggle

I bought the GPSMAP 67i and though it would be much simpler.
Now I'm not calling it, its probably brilliant if you know what your doing.

I cannot get on with the Garmin Explore app for planning routes.
firstly the public footpath close to my house isn't trackable on it, so no idea how many others are the same, Garmin are not showing so many trails i was surprised.
and if you make a mistake or want to move a line you cant, not on my Samsung fold phone anyway.
When you press and hold then move the line this then becomes the end of your route, losing all your data.

As a subscriber to the UK OS Maps app, i create my routes on that and send the GPX file to the 67i

First time out it was a track and i didn't get turn reminders although i was able to follow it.
only trouble i can see with this on long hike you will have the screen lit most of the time killing the battery.

Second time out i had converted to a course and nothing showed on the device to follow, i later found routing was on roads and tracks

Third time out i used waypoints which i had to load every time i passed one.
If i put the waypoint further apart the route doesn't go the way i want.

So as i see it i have 2 ways to use the device.
Find a way to transfer a GPX file and it gives audible turn warnings as a course
or follow a track and set the off route warning as 0.05mile so i don't have to keep holding it in my hand.

Can someone let me know what setting to check or give me a step by step guide on how they import a gpx and then use it.

Cannot send or receive messages after latest firmware update

Issue 1: Seemingly after the latest firmware update '9.4' all my message history disappeared on the 67i and the 67i refuses to send or receive ANY messages or update inreach weather. I cannot send/receive or update the weather with the Messenger app, Explore app, or on the device itself.

Issue 2: Explore and Messenger apps randomly sign me out and then demand an internet connection to be able to use the app with the device. Out in the middle of nowhere , no cell service, no internet cannot use the device. TERRIBLE DESIGN!

Issue 3: ALL my waypoints are on occasion randomly deleted off the device when syncing with the Explore app.

As of now my 67i is completely bricked, I am not even sure if the SOS function works. It will send a test and get information on the subscription in the 'inreach utilities' menu, but that is it. nothing else works.

Posting my review from REI.com to try and bring light to some of the 67i's horrifically bad UI.

"I 'upgraded' from a GPSMap 60CSx, this 67i model feels like a downgrade in almost every way. Pros: Very fast acquisition of satellites. Much more accurate than the 60CSx. inReach communication technology. Larger screen. Better battery life. Maps can be downloaded and updated on the device itself, although it is very slow even with a fast internet connection. Has a built in flashlight which might be useful I guess. Cons: No way to disable unnecessary menu animations. No option to change the map orientation to track up below a certain distance, the GPSMap 60CSx had this option, why doesn't this one. The battery cannot be replaced, thus reducing this devices' potential lifetime. My 60CSx still works perfectly fine to this day, I've had it since 2007. No way the Lithium battery in the 67i is lasting 18 years without replacement. Cumbersome and horrendously optimized menu system: The 60CSx's menu system is more compact and easier to use, the 67i's menu system is bloated, laggy, and cumbersome. Scrolling on the 67i is completely broken. On the 60CSx if you hold the up or down arrow to scroll through the list of waypoints and release the key it will instantly stop on the last selected item. Now on the 67i however it's like it has momentum, depending on how long you hold the up or down arrow it will keep scrolling for a long time when the button is released. The device will become completely unresponsive to button presses. Viewing and editing waypoints on the 60CSx is quick and simple, literally one button press. I can edit the waypoint directly and have three options on the bottom of the screen: delete, show it on the map, or route to it. On the 67i it's much, much more difficult and excruciatingly slow: Select the waypoint, wait 3-5 seconds for it to open the waypoint on the map with a single 'GO' option on the bottom. Want to edit it? Press menu, select 'Review Point' wait another 5 seconds for that page to load, Select menu AGAIN, select 'Edit Waypoint' WAIT ANOTHER 3-5 seconds! Finally in the edit menu. The 67i does not feel and rugged as the 60CSx. I've dropped the 60CSx several times, had it fall out of of my pack and into a creek once. Still works just a few scratches. I'm afraid to drop the 67i, it just feels different, like a cell phone. I got a silicone case for it so when I inevitably do drop it it hopefully doesn't break. I only bought this because I always carry a dedicated GPS and wanted the SOS/Satellite functionality since I often hike alone. Do yourself a favor and get the inReach mini instead of this. I do NOT recommend the 67i it is NOT worth $600 for the buggy/broken software on this thing and such a bad user experience. STAY AWAY!"

What I ended up doing was downgrading the firmware to 9.38 with instructions from a site called GPSrChive. Garmin support was no help and claimed there was no way to downgrade the firmware and on top of that wanted to charge me $180 to replace the GPS. After downgrading the GPS it worked as intended temporarily. Shortly after I connected it to explore/messenger it eventually forced an update to the latest broken 9.4x version which caused the same issue as described above. Is there any way to use it with the Garmin apps and block updates? Thanks.
