New GPSMAP 67i owner struggle

I bought the GPSMAP 67i and though it would be much simpler.
Now I'm not calling it, its probably brilliant if you know what your doing.

I cannot get on with the Garmin Explore app for planning routes.
firstly the public footpath close to my house isn't trackable on it, so no idea how many others are the same, Garmin are not showing so many trails i was surprised.
and if you make a mistake or want to move a line you cant, not on my Samsung fold phone anyway.
When you press and hold then move the line this then becomes the end of your route, losing all your data.

As a subscriber to the UK OS Maps app, i create my routes on that and send the GPX file to the 67i

First time out it was a track and i didn't get turn reminders although i was able to follow it.
only trouble i can see with this on long hike you will have the screen lit most of the time killing the battery.

Second time out i had converted to a course and nothing showed on the device to follow, i later found routing was on roads and tracks

Third time out i used waypoints which i had to load every time i passed one.
If i put the waypoint further apart the route doesn't go the way i want.

So as i see it i have 2 ways to use the device.
Find a way to transfer a GPX file and it gives audible turn warnings as a course
or follow a track and set the off route warning as 0.05mile so i don't have to keep holding it in my hand.

Can someone let me know what setting to check or give me a step by step guide on how they import a gpx and then use it.

Hi Barnoe you can follow the steps in our public FAQ for Uploading and Syncing GPX Files to the GPSMAP 66/67/86 Series which provides guidance for using either the Garmin Explore App or the Garmin Explore Website.

After syncing the handheld, the newly added data can be found by accessing one of the navigation options.

Press FIND.
Select Waypoints, Tracks, Courses, or Routes.
Select a waypoint, track, course, or route and select Go.

Newly added data can also be found in the main menu under Waypoint Manager, Track Manager, Course Planner, or Route Planner.

What I ended up doing was downgrading the firmware to 9.38 with instructions from a site called GPSrChive. Garmin support was no help and claimed there was no way to downgrade the firmware and on top of that wanted to charge me $180 to replace the GPS. After downgrading the GPS it worked as intended temporarily. Shortly after I connected it to explore/messenger it eventually forced an update to the latest broken 9.4x version which caused the same issue as described above. Is there any way to use it with the Garmin apps and block updates? Thanks.

Cannot send or receive messages after latest firmware update

Issue 1: Seemingly after the latest firmware update '9.4' all my message history disappeared on the 67i and the 67i refuses to send or receive ANY messages or update inreach weather. I cannot send/receive or update the weather with the Messenger app, Explore app, or on the device itself.

Issue 2: Explore and Messenger apps randomly sign me out and then demand an internet connection to be able to use the app with the device. Out in the middle of nowhere , no cell service, no internet cannot use the device. TERRIBLE DESIGN!

Issue 3: ALL my waypoints are on occasion randomly deleted off the device when syncing with the Explore app.

As of now my 67i is completely bricked, I am not even sure if the SOS function works. It will send a test and get information on the subscription in the 'inreach utilities' menu, but that is it. nothing else works.

Posting my review from REI.com to try and bring light to some of the 67i's horrifically bad UI.

"I 'upgraded' from a GPSMap 60CSx, this 67i model feels like a downgrade in almost every way. Pros: Very fast acquisition of satellites. Much more accurate than the 60CSx. inReach communication technology. Larger screen. Better battery life. Maps can be downloaded and updated on the device itself, although it is very slow even with a fast internet connection. Has a built in flashlight which might be useful I guess. Cons: No way to disable unnecessary menu animations. No option to change the map orientation to track up below a certain distance, the GPSMap 60CSx had this option, why doesn't this one. The battery cannot be replaced, thus reducing this devices' potential lifetime. My 60CSx still works perfectly fine to this day, I've had it since 2007. No way the Lithium battery in the 67i is lasting 18 years without replacement. Cumbersome and horrendously optimized menu system: The 60CSx's menu system is more compact and easier to use, the 67i's menu system is bloated, laggy, and cumbersome. Scrolling on the 67i is completely broken. On the 60CSx if you hold the up or down arrow to scroll through the list of waypoints and release the key it will instantly stop on the last selected item. Now on the 67i however it's like it has momentum, depending on how long you hold the up or down arrow it will keep scrolling for a long time when the button is released. The device will become completely unresponsive to button presses. Viewing and editing waypoints on the 60CSx is quick and simple, literally one button press. I can edit the waypoint directly and have three options on the bottom of the screen: delete, show it on the map, or route to it. On the 67i it's much, much more difficult and excruciatingly slow: Select the waypoint, wait 3-5 seconds for it to open the waypoint on the map with a single 'GO' option on the bottom. Want to edit it? Press menu, select 'Review Point' wait another 5 seconds for that page to load, Select menu AGAIN, select 'Edit Waypoint' WAIT ANOTHER 3-5 seconds! Finally in the edit menu. The 67i does not feel and rugged as the 60CSx. I've dropped the 60CSx several times, had it fall out of of my pack and into a creek once. Still works just a few scratches. I'm afraid to drop the 67i, it just feels different, like a cell phone. I got a silicone case for it so when I inevitably do drop it it hopefully doesn't break. I only bought this because I always carry a dedicated GPS and wanted the SOS/Satellite functionality since I often hike alone. Do yourself a favor and get the inReach mini instead of this. I do NOT recommend the 67i it is NOT worth $600 for the buggy/broken software on this thing and such a bad user experience. STAY AWAY!"

Basecamp and 67i?

There are two 67i reviews on Amazon saying the device does not work with Basecamp but without details? Can someone confirm, dispute or elaborate on that? I don't own a 67i. There is a thread here dealing with Basecamp-Mac OS connectivity. Is that the only limitation? Does the 67i work as expected with Basecamp on Windows?

Issues that may be affecting you:

Every update of Garmin Express (at least on Windows) reinstalls recurring scheduled tasks. The tasks are probably unwanted for most 67i users. I believe Garmin introduced it after users complained about Garmin Express inserting itself in the startup menu. In Windows environment, the task schedule is less obvious than the startup sequence.
The iPhone Explore app that was current as of mid-July 2026 was terribly buggy. I fund it locking up about 40% of the times it was opened. In those cases, it continued to show the twirling sync icon you described. Despite the app, it was not syncing.

FYI, I successfully use:

Garmin Express app on Windows to update 67i maps and firmware. Internet service needed.
Garmin Explore website then iPhone Explore app to update 67i InReach contacts, messages, etc by Bluetooth. Internet service needed.
Garmin Basecamp (on Windows) to store and manage all navigation data and to control via USB cable what navigation items are loaded onto my 67i. No Internet service needed.
I avoid Garmin's "Collections" and Connect app. The problems with using Collections and the Connect app are too serious and too numerous to list here. That system was designed for watches and devices that are in regular contact with the Internet, not for any use the 67i was designed for.

After I spent 2+ hours with Chat GPT troubleshooting, I then found out by digging through online Garmin pages/manuals that the 67i does not show up with Finder on a Mac computer (as you mentioned above). AI is not smart enough to know that I guess.

Your tips re: closing all other Garmin programs, even those that may be running in background or that open with startup, are much appreciated.,

You should consider going to work at Garmin. Simple, easy to understand, step by step instructions do not seem to be their forte.

Someone I talked with at Garmin told me the *only* way I should sync is through Garmin Explore app on a cell phone. He said Garmin Express on desktops often does not work well. So, to sync the 67i, he said there is no way to reliably sync using desktop computer. Instructed me to make edits/changes on desktop and then go to iPhone and open Explore and sync through wireless/bluetooth connection between Explore on phone and the 67i. Did not make much sense to me, but that's what a Garmin help person was saying.

I still am struggling. Did a factory re-set on the 67i, restoring all default settings (and wiping all data/memory). Then started sync via Explore on iPhone. Currently, on the Explore app/screen on iPhone, wheel still spinning saying sync is in progress, now after 17 hours from when sync started. I'm still wondering if my 67i has some hardware or other issues as things should just not be this difficult. Will give up on current sync in another hour or two and call Garmin back. Again.

A few points that might possibly be helpful:

1. The 67 series cannot appear as a drive in Finder, using the standard Apple and Garmin software. The 66 series (and earlier) did. This is because the 67 series does not have Mass Storage Mode. Instead, you have to use Android File Transfer (or similar) to view the files on the 67 using Media Transfer Protocol (MTP).

2. The Sync feature in Garmin Express does not sync your 67 with BaseCamp. It syncs the 67 with your Garmin Connect web account. If you want to sync anything with BaseCamp, you have to do it manually within BaseCamp, by dragging the desired items between the 67 and My Collection, or vice versa.

3. As others have mentioned, you need to make certain that no other MTP apps are running, even as background processes. This includes Garmin Express and Android File Transfer.

4. To make certain that Express does not run in the background, or start automatically when the 67 is connected:

4a. Open Express.

4b. Choose "Settings" from the Garmin Express menu.

4c. In the General tab, uncheck both boxes: "Always keep Garmin Express running in the background" and "Automatically open Garmin Express [...]".

4d. Close the Preferences window, then choose "Quit Garmin Express" from the Garmin Express menu.

5. To make certain that Android File Transfer does not start automatically, you have to prevent the Android File Transfer Agent from starting at login. To do this, go to System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login Items, or System Preferences > General > Login Items & Extensions (depending on your macOS version). Then click on the Android File Transfer Agent in the list and click the "–" button to remove it. Then restart your Mac.

Unless your BaseCamp installation is still corrupted, it should now work correctly. After completely removing BaseCamp (see Garmin page on this), reinstalling it, and doing all of the above, mine has been good for the past three years, so there is hope. 😀

You might also consider narrowing the problem by experimenting with Basecamp on a different computer. Given your description, it sounds like the problem could be in any combination of USB cable, 67i and/or Mac computer.

I'm using a Mac. Now my desktop won't even recognize the 67i. Does not show up as a connected device/drive. Just spent 2+ hours with Chat GPT bot running various fixes/troubleshooting and no luck. Tried using different USB cables, different USB slot/ports on iMac/desktop, shutting down all other Garmin apps, trying different USB transfer protocol settings (Garmin and MTP), shutting down and re-starting 67i and Basecamp, updating software, and no luck. Very frustrating. When it works, it's nice, but I seem to be in some technical vortex I can't escape from. Waypoints and tracks created on Basecamp for upcoming backpacking trip not transferring to 67i, even when I get a popup message saying sync is complete after connecting unit to desktop with USB cable. (Get that sync complete message but the 67i still does not show up in "Finder" on the iMac desktop.)

Next step is to buy new USB data cables. I did have a major issue with my 67i not syncing properly several months ago; maybe my unit is going bad?

you have to make sure no other Garmin software is running on your Mac. Also they need to be completely quit.

Hi, 7351041. The 67i works fine with Basecamp for me. I am not sure from your post how you are trying to use the software and the 67i. If you are using the "Device" menu, I suggest you abandon that approach. Windows recognizes the 67i as a storage device or as two storage devices if the 67i contains a microSD card. You can copy and paste tracks, activities, waypoints, etc between Basecamp and the 67i in either direction. I use Basecamp as my archive for navigation data. When I record a track or waypoint with my 67i that I want to keep, I copy that those items into my Basecamp archive. Basecamp has a nice nested folder ability that makes it easy to keep things organized. Before heading out, I'll delete unneeded data from the 67i and copy what I will need into it. Limiting the data on the 67i to what is needed, makes the device more useable in the field.

08/09/26: This is an old discussion, but I am giving up on Basecamp for use with my 67i. Have spent hours and just can't get it to work. Main issue now is 67i won't connect to Bascamp. Keep getting error message "there was a problem connecting device...if problem persists, you may need to restart your device" Have tried restarting, connecting with different USB cables, different USB ports on my iMac, re-install of Basecamp, and other things. Nothing works. User interface cumbersome and non-intuitive. Searching for other ways to plan routes/trips on my desktop at home now. Very disappointed in Garmin and their multiple APPS. Can't get simple tasks done with their products.

once everything came back up and I connected my phone and actived inreach again(it did it by itself) everything worked as designed. All of my issues were corrected.

Alltrails and other GPX exports have line going across the world

All the gpx files ive loaded on my 67i have a random line that goes across the planet. This one, exported from alltrails, ends up in Antarctica under new Zealand. Wtf is going on and how do I get rid of this? My 67i has been nothing but a glitchy mess so far.

That’s not possible. GPX files can contain waypoints, tracks or routes (or combinations of those).

sure like my 67i. I live in Wyoming and have been using it frequently when I go into the backcountry.

I have to use Gaia to get the detail I need. I don't miss my inreach explorer plus but I do really miss the earthmate software.

any thoughts from Garmin on upgrading the explorer app to be similar to the earthmate?

Route Planner option missing from main menu

I created a route using Basecamp and loaded it to my 67i. How do I now delete the route? The manual says to press MENU twice and then select Route Planner. I do not have a Route Planner icon, it seems to be missing.

There is a Course Planner but that does not seem to let you do anything with routes. That will let you create a course and save it as a route. But once you've done that, you can't delete that route either.

I have a Garmin GPS MAP 79s which has course planner but not route planner for marine navigation. I rang Garmin UK and their emulator and their own 79s also did not have the route planning is on. They are contacting garmin US to find out how to reinstate route planning as course planner does not provide all the necessary options that I require. What particularly annoyed me was that a route transferred over from my old gpsmap 76csx allowed me to follow the route from my home port to my destination but had no features to do a route reversal. Ended up following a yacht all the way back to my home port. Had the weather closed in and darkness fallen we'd have been in great trouble!

yes , to suspedn, you have to pay a suspension fee. The device is still registered and can be unsuspended any time within minutes with same user data etc. This is the advantage of suspend.

Finally got over beeing butt hurt about cancelling the freedomw plan, and making me pay $35 to reactiate my devide for thier Freedom-ish plan. Glad they chose to go that route because so many dont need an annual. I paid $35, reactivated for 1 month, then after backpack trip I suspened it. Today I get a bill for next month with an option on my account to Suspend (again)? Did I miss something - doez suspend just mean diasable but you are still paying?

KMZ custom maps no longer visible after firmware 9.45

Hi to all,

I have a 67 and a 67i, both updated recently to their latest firmwares, 9.45 for the 67i.

In both GPs's I used for years the same custom maps in KMZ formats.

Since the latest update to fw 9.45, the custom maps are no longer visible in the 67i, while they are still perfectly functioning in the 67.

The Map Manager and Custom Maps menus still appear, and I can see all my custom maps and I can turn their visibility on and off, but no, they no longer show in the map.

I then put both my GPS's side by side and made sure that all the maps settings are exactly the same: map layers. Etc. But no, the 67 shows them, the 67i not anymore.

I then did a full device reset, and again mirrored the map settings of the 67, no luck.

I also copied again the KMZ files from my PC to the SD card (also in the 67 they sre in the SD, as they have both always been in both GPS's, still nothing.

What else can I try? I strongly suspect that the last firmware update did something.

Is any of you still able to see and use KMZ custom maps in 9.45 ?

Can I still revert the firmware by copying the fw file in the internal memory, like in the old Oregon series?

Good to know about map format/type requirements. I just reloaded several of my custom kmz experiments: one was converted from a .tif and doesn't show, the others that do appear came from .jpg
