Font size on yardages to and beyond hazards and other landmarks on map

Hi - New S70 user here but I had had an S42 for like 6 years. I have seen the below complaint or enhancement request on the internet (Facebook, Reddit etc) but I don't believe I see it on this particular forum so perhaps this will get attention from Garmin developers. I'm a mid 50's golfer who uses distance prescription glasses and/or sunglasses when playing golf. I don't bring reading glasses nor want to.

The font on almost all of the key functions on the S70 are fine but currently the yardages in the map mode are impossible for me to read. I think that partially it's because of the desire to avoid taking up too much real estate on the watch face and partially because the font is white on a green background. Request would be some combination of:

1) Make the font choice a configuration setting (large/small/medium) or

2) Make the font black (maybe that would make it more legible? or

3) Make the font just a tick larger, which perhaps would avoid any problems with real estate while maybe helping make it more legible.

I understand why you went in this direction aethetically versus the old models where you would scroll through a series of front/back numbers in order of all of the bunkers/hazards from tee to green, but the size of the font just makes it unusable for the 'olds'.

  • I highlighted this issue three years ago.  Then many other older golfers claimed font are too small to read .  Garmin doesn't care.  they design their equipment for "young eyes " what is funny considering in Europe  90% of golfers are old.  From my experience though I can recommend you very simple solution.  Buy S62 ,  S50,  Epix 2 ( now FenixE) They all have much better visibility of hazards distance.

  • Hi  there are currently two options to increase number size on the Approach S70. You can find links to the owner's manual for these settings below.

    Using Big Numbers Mode

Viewing the Map in Big Numbers Mode

We do appreciate any feedback to improve our products and software. Please use our Ideas Form so it is forwarded to the appropriate team.

  • Could you send me screenshot showing distance to a bunker . I don’t have s70 to check out.

  • Can anybody share a picture of screen Garmin PW is talking about ?

  • This has been raised a number of times but nothing will change. The watch is designed by people who do not play golf; people who buy the watch and do play golf make suggestions on these forums but no one at Garmin cares as long as they make money. The response from Garmin-PW shows that they are not listening to what the exact problem is. Selecting "Big Numbers" just makes the FMB numbers bigger, it does not change the font size of numbers for water, penalty areas or bunkers. IT IS THESE NUMBERS THAT ARE TOO SMALL TO READ OR BE USEFUL FOR OLDER PLAYERS (large font to try and make the point clearer to those at Garmin who fail to listen). The maps on the S62 were legible and font size was fine for hazards etc, it is the new maps on the S70 that are the problem!

Don't even get me started on the issue with manipulating or sorting data on Garmin Connect to make that useful. If only Apple Watch had a better battery life then that would be my golf watch of choice!

  • It is really sad. After PW response I thought there was a software update correcting fonts size issue. Now I see PW either not understand the problem or intentionally fooling us there is fantastic solution but didn’t know big number option. I think Garmin Cody was more fair with us not responding for numerous claims. Since I have eye sight problem I tested all Garmin watches and many other brands too.  Paradoxically the best visibility of hazards distance gave me Garmin Epix 2 which is not dedicated golf watch. The only problem with this watch is 5 buttons and bulky shape. If Amoled display may be compromised than definitely S62 is the king.
