Garmin Approach R50 – Ball Flight Not Matching Actual Shots at Driving Range

Hi,

I've recently been using my Garmin Approach R50 at an outdoor driving range and noticed some inconsistencies between the actual ball flight and what the R50 displays.

On several occasions, the ball flight I could clearly see down the range didn't appear to match the simulated ball flight shown on the R50 screen.

This has raised some concerns about the accuracy of the shot shape and directional data, particularly when using the device outdoors where I can compare the readings against the actual ball flight.

I'm a left-handed golfer, although I'm not sure whether that has any relevance to the issue.

Has anyone else experienced similar discrepancies when using the R50 at an outdoor driving range?

I'd also be interested to know whether Garmin is aware of any potential issues with ball flight calculations or shot shape accuracy.

Garmin R50 – Club Path Displayed as Right-Handed for Left-Handed Golfers

Hi everyone,

I've noticed a potential issue with the Garmin Approach R50 when displaying club data on the built-in screen.

As a left-handed golfer, I've noticed that the club path graphic and club illustration appear to be displayed from a right-handed golfer's perspective, rather than being mirrored for a left-handed player.

This makes the visual representation of the club data confusing when reviewing shots.

Has anyone else who plays left-handed noticed this issue?

It would be great if Garmin could look into this and potentially introduce a software update that correctly displays the club path and club graphics according to the golfer's selected handedness.

Today we started the rollout of the GLM version 4.4.0 for the Approach R50 (regular System Software stays at 5.00). This is now live for all users.

Changes:

Fixed an issue where the Model would not save correctly in My Bag.
Fixed a crash in languages: DA, FI, HE, JA, TH, TR, and VI.
Fixed an issue where club metrics would disappear after swapping users.
Fixed an issue with displaying connected software information.
Fixed an issue with the display rotating 90 degrees.
Fixed an issue with loading practice session activities.
Fixed issues with shot colors and deleted clubs.
Fixed issue with translations.

Readings Are Way Off On Driver and 5w

Had a range session tonight and my driver numbers felt wrong, so I went through the CSV.

I'm a 13 HDCP and usually carry my driver between 270 and 290. Speeds and start direction look believable, but analyzing my driver shot data, there's really weird stuff happening

Club speed was all above 100 mph and ball speed up to 151 mph
launch direction mostly within about 2° of the target.
Backspin is far too low for a driver. The median on my full swings is about 900 rpm, and some shots were under 700. One shot at 144 mph ball speed showed only 346 rpm of total spin.
Spin axis is way off. Many full swings read between -50° and -81°, even though face-to-path was small on most of them. The shots don't look like that in real life.
Smash factor bounces between 1.33 and 1.44 on similar swings, and the low ones line up with the worst spin readings.
Carry comes out short as a result. The one swing with sane spin (about 1,600 rpm, axis -10°) showed a believable carry. This matches what I've seen other people describe with driver and 3 wood, where speed and direction look fine but spin, axis and carry go sideways.

My setup:

indoor, lights off with non flickering LED spotlights illuminating my playing surface.
white srixon z star balls
club data with stickers
taylormade stealth 5w and Ping G430 LST

firmware: Approach R50 5.0.0.

Increasing missed shots after latest software update

I purchased my R50 about four weeks ago and had no issues until the latest software update last week.

Over the past two days, the R50 has been missing more and more shots. The status LED is solid green and shows “Ready to hit,” and the ball is in the correct hitting zone. My setup, lighting, ball, and hitting location are all exactly the same as before.

It does not miss every shot, but the failure rate has become noticeably higher since the update.

Has anyone else experienced this after the latest update?

Trouble with R50

I purchased the R50 last week, but the yardages I’m getting are way off. My irons are showing distances that are about 20 yards different, while my driver is off by roughly 50 yards.

I’m running the latest update, using it on a level surface. The tee is about 8 feet from the impact screen, and the R50 is positioned around 6-7 feet behind the tee. The setup seems to be within the recommended range, so I’m not sure what could be causing such a large discrepancy.

Has anyone else experienced this issue or found a way to improve the distance readings? It’s getting pretty frustrating.

Stableford scoring on 5.0.0 — where do I enter handicaps?

Hi all,

Running system software 5.0.0 / GLM 4.3.0 on an Approach R50.

I set up a multiplayer Home Tee Hero round with Stableford as the scoring format and could not find anywhere to enter a handicap — neither during round setup after selecting the format, nor in the round settings during play, nor in the profile settings for any of the players. Two of the players were guest profiles, the third a profile signed in with a Garmin account.

Stableford without handicaps is just gross points relative to par, which removes the point of the format for a group with mixed abilities. So my questions:

1. Is there a handicap input somewhere that I have missed? If so, where exactly?
2. If not, is handicap support planned for Stableford and Match Play?
3. Can guest profiles (no Garmin account) be assigned a handicap at all, or is this limited to profiles signed in with an account?

For context: in Europe we normally play off a course handicap taken from a club table rather than an index/slope calculation, so a plain "local handicap" number field per player would be the most useful implementation.

How long does it take to fix the bugs in the V 5.0 update.

My unit is turning screen 90 degrees and does not read the stroke, have to go back to menu and press connet to gs pro

for it work a hole or two again.

I mean it can not that difficult to fix. Or if it does give us back the earlier version

Trees on green - Boothbay Country Club

There are trees right in the middle of the green on two holes at Boothbay Country Club. I saw it on the flyovers and thought it just looked that way from above. But, no, the trees are actually on the green. Garmin, please fix this. It’s a very nice course that is ruined by these two holes.

High Speed Camera's Shut Down

Over the past two weeks I cannot get through an entire game without my high-speed camera's shutting down. All the lights (Red Camera lights and Red/Green ready light) on the front of the unit go out and the only way to get them back is quit the game and start over. The R50 is not locked up as I can maneuver around in the settings but nothing will allow me to get the camera's back on without restarting. I have all the latest firmware upgrades installed.

Just updated my r50 to 5.0 and it’s now showing all my club distances as 3x the value shown in my Garmin golf app. I wish I could hit my driver 711 yards on average but that’s not the case. Any fix for this?

Standby mode is triggered when there is a ball in the hitting area for several minutes and, once triggered, it grays out the screen and makes me click through. Why does "standby mode" exist? What is the point of a warning that only appears when there is a ball in front of the monitor? It's only when there is a ball in the hitting zone. I guess I could understand something like a screensaver to preserve the life of a projector, but that's not what this is. It doesn't turn the projector off. Standby mode only grays out the screen and makes me hit "ok." WHY??? I'm constantly looking at my swing or videos while hitting so standby mode is constantly triggered. Please let me turn this off; it serves no function. Useless hassle.

Garmin R50 doesn't go into ball recognition mode

When I'm playing a course with a few people the Approach often doesn't go into ball recognition mode. No red or green light.

Replaying the last shot (if you aren't starting a new hole) and then selecting continue usually fixes it.

Powering off and powering back on also fixes it.

This seems to be happening more and more frequently on my unit.

Any suggestions?

V5.0 Good update, basics still missing

A lot of good first steps in this upgrade with a number of new bugs that I'm sure will be fixed soon, but still a lot of basics missing.

- Ability to set Favourite courses. Ability to rate the course after you play it. With 42k courses, there's a lot to keep track of.

- Save multiple unfinished rounds. My kid comes in while I'm playing a round and wants to continue the round we started yesterday. Save my round and play a few holes with him and go back to my saved game.

- Longer impact video. Before and after Impact.

- Putting Greens in practice ranges.

- Restore the number of data metrics shown on the display. The tiles were made larger in the last update which resulted in fewer metrics shown and the need to continually scroll.

- This one might not be so basic but would be the biggest upgrade. Face impact location heat map

Version 5.0 bugs. Screen orientation rotated as well as hitting area

Version 5.0 buggy. GS Pro app keeps switching from landscape to portrait randomly and misreading shots. When it rotates it also changes the hitting area.

I have to exit out of the GSPro connector and reenter for it to work. Why is charging orientation in the first place? This is unacceptable for a $5k device.

The unit upgraded to version 5.0 and the ability to connect to 3rd party software does not display any options.

When the device is on, I navigate to Connect option and select. The screen does not show any options including GSPro, Awesome golf, etc ..

I tried restarting, shutting down and then starting. I reset my network connections and downloaded courses for Tee Hero. Same issue

Range Targets

Has anyone got the range targets to work? I have selected the designated distance on the new update which i am wanting to play to and was expecting a distance circle a set distance down the range but doesn't seem to display anything.

3rd party software still not populating.

Called garmin support and started a resolve, this morning still no luck. Tried restarting, shutting down, logging out all with no success. Any help will be appreciated. Wondering if doing a factory reset would solve it but don’t want to lose anything.
