For four years now,(Q3 2021) there has been no option to adjust the video capture settings in the last Garmin Golf app version 3.5.0.1.
All videos captured from your mobile device are captured in very low resolution at a very low frame rate. 320 x 568 px / 30 fps H264 :-(
It is impossible to see the club head at impact or the club path at such a low resolution and frame rate.
Viewing the video outside of the app will not change anything.
At swing speed (85 mph for example), between two video frames at 30 fps, the club head position can be in any position on a range of 127 cm.
For example the club head position at first image is 63cm in front of the ball, and for the next image, 64 cm behind the ball
Actually, at 30 fps, at best, you will see a ghost image of your club !
HD & 120 fps are the real minimum ! 240 fps a must have for an acceptable motion blur.
- At a 85 mph swing speed, club path travel approximately 16 centimeters in 1/240s
- At a 85 mph swing speed, club path travel approximately 32 centimeters in 1/120s
- At a 85 mph swing speed, club path travel approximately 63 centimeters in 1/60s
- At a 85 mph swing speed, club path travel approximately 127 centimeters in 1/30s
For the futur, to completely freeze an object moving at 85 mph (≈ 38 m/s): you need a shutter speed of approximately 1/4000 s or faster,
So a camera capable of filming at least 4000 frames per second (fps) if each frame is to be sharp.
However, with the increasing quality of mobile phones/tablets, is now becoming truly ridiculous.
Garmin, please update your application and, if necessary, update the Approach R10.
For example, my iPhone 16 Pro Max allows the following video capture from the front camera (23mm f1.9)
4K / 24, 30, 60 fps / HEVC(H265) Dolby Vision
HD / 30, 60 fps / HEVC(H265) Dolby Vision
HD / 120 fps / HEVC(H265) -> Slow motion
(From the rear camera, you can even go up to HD / 240 fps!)
I'm glad that there is automatic capture of each shot. The detection of each shot works correctly. But thats it !
Its now 4 years whithout the option to adjust the video framerate and size ! Garmin wake up !
