  • Hard reset, Service menu, Data Backup

If any one else wandered this are the button sequences for Fenix 3:

Switch off (if hanged): hold LIGHT button for at least 25 seconds

CLEARING PROBLEMS WITH CORRUPTED DATA/GARMIN LOGO LOOP, MISSING ACTIVITIES ETC:

Hard reset - method 1 - softer (clear user data): Switch off and wait for couple seconds. While holding BACK/LAP button press LIGHT button until Garmin logo appears, then let go LIGHT button still holding the BACK/LAP button until question about clearing user data appears. Answer yes.
WARNING: It clears SOME user made settings but for example leaves the IQ apps, backup data first!

Hard reset - method 2 (reset to factory settings) :
Power off the fenix 3 and wait for couple seconds
Press and release the Power button
Once the Garmin Logo appears Press and hold the Start and Back buttons.
When you hear the first beep (after ca. 60s) let the start button go
When you hear the second beep (couple seconds after first beep) let the back button go
The device will boot back up and you will be prompted to enter your profile information.

WARNING: It clears ALL user made settings, apps and current activities! So backup data first!
TIP: If you want to do a TOTAL hard reset when suspecting data corruption you can erase ALL data from the watch (GARMIN directory also), and even you can FORMAT it. After disconnecting the watch from you PC it will take relatively longer to restart but it will rebuild the data structure from backup (some user data will be also restored).
TIP: If you are left with only English language after hard reset or formatting the watch then, you have to download other language files through Webuupdater/Garmin Express

Service menu: Switch off and wait for couple seconds. While holding DOWN button press LIGHT button until Garmin logo appears, then let go LIGHT button still holding the DOWN button until service menu appears.

Development Menu: Press Menu... Select Settings... Select System... Select About... Press the Light/Power button 8 times

    Data backup:
Thx to Pprimoz for pointing me the right way, the link to full descritption here: link

And a short one, we can back up files from following subfolders in \GARMIN folder:
LOCATION- contains Locations.fit file that stores saved locations
RECORDS- contains Records.fit file that stores personal records you have achieved
SETTINGS – contains Settings.fit file which stores user profile and certain device settings (it certainly saves settings for watchface, time, backlight, sound, GPS, GLONASS, etc)
SPORTS – contains each activity app as a separate file
TOTALS – contains Totals.fit file which stores device totals for time and distance (seems this doesn't work)
MLTSPORT - multiactivity file setting like Triathlon - omitted by Garmin in the description

After hard reset you put the backup files to folder named :\GARMIN\NEWFILES the watch does the rest
! NEWFILES is a hidden folder so you have to switch on visibility of hidden files/folders in your OS
! Note that you should ONLY copy files from backup folders, don't create subolders in NEWFILES folder
! Seems there is no way to backup VO2Max and totals they are lost after hard reset

The method described in the next post also works

    Force firmware reinstall
As it seems to be (second to 'master reset') the marvellous cure to all F3 problems (at least from Garmin's support point of view ) this is how you do it:
    1. You have to download Garmin's Webupdater which is located here:
    http://www8.garmin.com/support/colle...t=999-99999-27
    2. Install the app, connect your watch, run the app
    3. Click to the point where it says you have the newest firmware and asks if you want to reinstall it
    4. Reinstall it (it will download to the watch), disconnect the watch and then choose yes when it asks you to install the update.
NOTE: I would do a master reset after reinstalling (or if it doesn't help before reinstalling) the firmware...
Going through this should make Garmin's support happy

    Firmware downgrade
Thx to findings of other forum members described in this POST
    1. Download and install WEBUPDATER
    2. Download firmware from this LINK
    3. Create a shortcut to WEBUPDATER on your desktop
    4. Connect your watch and wait until Garmin Express finishes sync, BACKUP your data if you need it
    5. Drag the downloaded *.RGN file to the shortcut, it will start webupdater.. click next until it starts updating
    6. Disconnect your watch, it should ask if you want to update to the new (old) firmware.. it resets user data like in Hard Reset - method 1 described above
Tested it 4.4->3.8 on a PC and it worked
NOTE: There was no need to rename the downloaded Fenix3_380.rgn file to gupdate.rgn or cut the 30 bytes as was suggested in other posts. I don't know if it works this way on MAC though
NOTE: Since revoking of the BETA testing procedure the watch seems to update just by putting the update file renamed to gupdate.rgn in the /GARMIN directory.. at least it works with files posted by GARMIN

    Bluetooth reconnect procedure
Since some people seem to be loosing BT connectionn with smartphone after update and have trouble reconnecting I am adding a description how to do it (based on iOS but should be similar in Android):
1.Go to Garmin Connect Mobile App on your phone, choose Devices, click the info icon at the top of the screen, select "Unpair Device," Select your fenix 3, select "Forget Device."
2.Settings->Bluetooth on your phone, click the info icon to the right of fenix 3 and select "Forget this device." (if more Fenix 3 watches show do it for each one)... I prefer to switch off BT in phone for couple seconds at this moment
    3.fenix 3 watch Menu->Settings->Bluetooth->Pair Mobile Device
    4. On your phone, Garmin Connect Mobile App, choose "Devices," click the + icon at the top right of the screen, find fenix 3 and click "Start" to pair it (or choose the Fenix 3 showed as registered in Garmin Connect).
NOTE: It is very important to connect the watch through GC Mobile App NOT through BT menu in you smartphone!
    5. Transfer the passkey from your watch... accept (or not) the watch for activity tracking... and you are done

    UPDATE:

I found a way to backup the settings of built in activities. In the \Garmin\Sports directory you have 10 files corresponding to the original 10 activities (the 11th - Triathlon settings file is located in \Garmin\Mltsport

Now if you back up those files (with your personalized settings) and then upload them back to the watch after hard reset it just ignores them.
... but for example if you take the backup file for RUN activity named: 0RRUN.FIT and rename it to 20RRUN.FIT (any 2 digit number starting from 13 in front should work) and then upload it to the watch, we will see after disconnecting that it shows 'UPDATING' on a a watch face for a moment and then miraculously it will use the settings from the backup file for RUN activity

The uploaded file disappears from the watch and only 0RRUN.FIT is there. Of course it works for all the other activities.

The user created activities (apps) show in this directory starting from number 13 in front (example: 13GTEST.FIT for my created activity named TEST.. the 'G' added by the watch to the name in file). You can upload them to the watch without changing names.

Thanks! Does anyone know how to operate the service menu? Specifically, the GPS chipset test? I've lost my GPS and want to find out if it's a hardware or software issue.

I don`t think it is a good idea for a layman (includes me), to play with/in the service menu without knowing what we are doing/what will happen...

              Service menu
              ....
Hello, I tried both without any luck. No reset/question menu, no service menu.
The issue started while updating to v3.10. After update rebooted and stuck on boot logo. I left it all night "trying" to boot but with no luck again. Is there a way to "reinstall" the firmware ?
              Thanks in advance.

Something apparently went wrong during the update and it is stuck. Did you try to connect it to your PC? If it sees the Garmin disk you can upload the file to Garmin directory, if it doesn't see it then I don't know a way to reinstall it.
You can also try to switch off the watch holding LIGHT button for over 20 sec, then try to switch it on. If it doesn't work then you probably have to return it for a replacement

Yeah I dont like that reset method.

Try this one which does not pop any menus, it works better:

                  Power off the fenix
Press and release the Power button
Once the Garmin Logo appears Press and hold the Start and Back buttons.
When you hear the first beep let the start button go
When you hear the second beep let the back button go
The device will boot back up and you will be prompted to enter your profile information.

Backup: I don't care about backup, I just want it to work. Except that I want it factory default, it might be a malfunction of the apps 1 or 2 that may have problem with 3.00 or 3.10..
Still nothing. It just stays on boot logo. I kept pressing start+back for more than 10s after boot logo showed up but no sound, one or two.

I noticed also that the watch does some kind of reboots. Closes screen and restarts without any action from me. It probably tries to boot but it can't.
Another issue is that I cannot see any external drive on Mac or Windows machine when I attach the watch through USB.

No idea what you mean by backup as I was only giving instructions on how to reset the watch. Nothing to do with backup.

Anyhow if I recall correctly when I did it - I had to hold the two buttons down for considerably longer than 10 seconds. Maybe 20 or 30, before I heard the beeps. But if this still does not work it would seem you have more serious problems like the firmware is corrupted or missing and it cannot boot.
