  • Garmin Express - Software for Keeping Nuvi, Zumo and Dezl (And Some Others?) Updated

Is there going to be a forum created for Garmin Express or am I blind, and there's already one?

    http://software.garmin.com/en-US/express.html

I downloaded the Mac version of Express this morning and ran it with my Montana 650 connected. Looks interesting and useful, but it seems to have some issues. It saw the Montana and offered a Lifetime Map Update so I let that start. I then went to the Extras tab where it seemed to think that all the vehicles and voices were not compatible with the Montana, when I know at least many of them are compatible, because they're already on my Montana.

Is there any way to communicate with the developers? There's nothing I could find in the software or the Garmin Support site which tells me how.

Not a Garmin employee. Never have been. But I have a Montana, a Monterra, an Etrex Touch35, a Nuvi 2597, two Virb Elites, and too many other older Garmin devices to mention.

    Hello? Is there anyone home?

I find it a little hard to believe that nobody knows anything about Express.

Quite a few of us 'know about' Garmin Express but whether any of the Garmin staff involved are monitoring this forum I don't know ... but expect not.
Currently own Drive 50LMT-D, Nuvi 2508LMT-D, Nuvi 1490LMT, Nuvi 1310, Montana 650T, Etrex 20, and use Basecamp, OSM mapping
Previously owned Etrex Legend H, Mio Navman and used Mapsource
(please note that I am not employed by Garmin, but am a long term user of Garmin software and hardware)

So does Express work for you? It doesn't for me. When I plug my Montana in, it offers a map update, gets partway through (38 tiles first attempt, 75 the second time I tried) then invariably stops, though the program is still running.

It's worked so far for my 1490, 1310 and Etrex 20. I even downloaded the current map to a 'dummy GPS' I created on a memory stick. All went well and to me it seems a far better program than the Lifetime Updater which I believe it's meant to replace, as well as doing the tasks currently done by Webupdater. On top of which it will also do things like backup/restore that many of us have learnt to do manually but Garmin Express now automates for those who wish to use a 'one stop shop'.

Caveat to all of that is I run it on a PC, not a mac

Ok, full disclosure - I'm on a Mac.

I'm glad to hear it works for you on several different units. I agree, it does look like a useful program so I look forward to when it becomes more reliable.

Check that your firewall and/or virus checker (not sure they're needed on a mac?) and/or parental controls etc aren't blocking the connection

I'll try it on my PC.

Garmin's servers have been slow, so don't change any OS X settings just yet. It works OK on my iMac (10.8.2) but reports my nuvi 760 needs a map update (it doesn't). I haven't tried a map update but it recognizes my zumo 660 and shows appropriate updates. I'm leery of trusting the completeness of its backup function.

Express did run on my PC/Netbook but it was slow. No need to connect to the Garmin servers though since the PC version didn't think I needed a map upgrade, unlike the Mac version. I'm sure this will eventually work properly but for now, I think I'll stick with Web Updater.

Well you can certainly stick with Webupdater, but that won't tell you when a map upgrade is available

The Lifetime Map Updater tells me that.

Lifetime updater has proved to be rather flakey though, so I suspect in due course Garmin will drop it and Webupdater in favour of Express

GE has to connect with Garmin servers in order to compare what's on your GPS with the latest versions, so if that connection isn't working, neither will GE.
