  • Import geotagged photos?

    Hello,

I want to import geotagged photos in BaseCamp. When I try with the File > Import photos menu and select the geotagged photo, I get a message that no geotagged photos are found. I'm pretty sure it is geotagged however, see pictures. Am I doing something wrong?
    Thanks for any advice,
    Raf

    Important photos into BaseCamp

Looks to me like you are using iPhoto, if so here is my experience. If I export a geotagged photo from iPhoto using jpeg format, BaseCamp tells me the same thing. If I import these files into HoudahGeo, there is no geotag. If I drag the same photo from iPhoto library the coordinates appear and if I save the file, BaseCamp imports the photo. Just exporting a geocoded jpeg does not necessary write the coordinates to the picture file.

You're right in that I use iPhoto. But, when exporting the photo I check "Include location data" and it seems to be written to the exif data of the exported image, as you can see in the screenshot of the exif data...
Also, in HoudahGeo, the exported image is marked as geotagged. I will try your solution, however I still think this is strange.

@RAFKE74 - Is it possible for you to upload the photo to a location where I can take a look at it? Thanks.

FYI, exiftool and Preview on my system show that the GPS data is there, but BaseCamp does not 'see' it. The problem is not unique to your system.

I have determined why BaseCamp doesn't like the geotag in your photo. Please take a look at a screenshot of the raw exif data comparison between a geotagged photo that BaseCamp likes and your photo, which it does not. Your photo is on the right.

The key information that is missing from your photo is the GPSVersionID. BaseCamp looks for the GPSVersionID to see if a geotag is present, and in your photo it doesn't find it so it doesn't look any further.

How did you geotag this photo? It is possible that using a different program to do it (or even use BaseCamp if you want) will add this tag. In BaseCamp you can create a waypoint at the location of the photo. Then in the waypoint dialog press the "Add Photo" button. When you choose your photo file make sure you check the geotag check box in the file selection window. This will cause BaseCamp to geotag the photo at the position of the waypoint.

              Hope this helps!

Thanks, solved! The photo was tagged using the Places feature in iPhoto. When I geotag it using my GPS tracks with HoudahGeo, the exif data show the GPSVersionID and BaseCamp imports the photo.

Another way (perhaps easier) to do this is to drag your pics from iPhoto to a folder on your desktop. Open BaseCamp and select your track. Clicking the little tools icon on the opened track (that sprocket icon in the lower left) will reveal a 'Match Photos' option. By following the next steps, BaseCamp with match the time stamps on the photos with those in the track to place the photos at the correct locations along the track. Of course for this to work properly the camera and track must be time-coordinated or the correction known.

                  Cheers!

P.S. Note to Garmin. A small problem is that at present the photos can't be exported. It would be nice if this feature was included in a future version of BaseCamp so the programme could be used to geotag photos for use elsewhere.
