View Full Version : Nuvi 50LM - Language update problem

09-01-2013, 07:38 AM
Wondering if someone could help me on this as I could not find a answer anywhere. I just updated my Nuvi50LM using the Garmin Express Software. After it was done I now have only one language to choose from in settings (Francais Canadien). I have all the languages for Text, and Keyboard but only have one to choose from for Voice. I have done a master system reset and that did not change anything.

So how do I get the Voice Language to American English when it does not give me that option?

Thanks

Don

Seems like another Express gremlin ... run WebUpdater (http://www8.garmin.com/products/webupdater/howtoinstall.jsp) and that should reload them :)

It's also possible the OP has a corrupted \Garmin\GarminDevice.xml file. Deleting the file and rebooting may correct that.

I didn't think that info was in the xml file ... but that's your territory and not mine :)

Yup--it is :D The XML file contains details of all updateable files on the unit. GE/WebUpdater/etc look at that file to determine what files have updates. If the files aren't in the XML (because it's corrupted) they won't be offered.

Got that, but the OP was asking about choosing files on the GPS, as GE seems to have deleted some. A corrupted xml file (if I get you correctly) would prevent GE from offering to update them, but shouldn't result in GE deleting them in the first place ... or would it?

Not sure what the OP updated with GE but it sounds like filesystem corruption on his 50LM. The 50LM may not have been "safely removed" (people do that all the time). That could result in missing voice (and other files) and/or a corrupted/missing GarminDevice.xml.

Now the OP can get the files back with GE/WebUpdater (i.e. reload them) but I got the impression, perhaps incorrectly, that they weren't being offered.

Thanks!!! and Wow......

Quick responses and got it fixed. I ran Webupdater and that fixed it.

Thank You again

I don't know why it went to French only with no other option except silence. At the last update all local memory was used up and it suggested a micro sd card as an option or could continue, I chose to continue. It completed okay with no warnings. When used in my car it spoke only french or I could only select silence.
I then came home and updated the map system using only SW maps and that left 0.65GB free. So I reverted to the previous update level since I had more RAM space and it completed but it still only speaks in french. This level previously had a number of english speaking options, now ONLY FRENCH.....
How can I get a clean reinstall of the whole system or is it time to dump this and get something else?

I just had the same or very similar problem. nuvi 40LM , updated maps in early March. Next time I used the unit, had only Portugese available as the language voice, even though text and maps were in English. I had to go to EXTRAS in GE and specifically load English, after which it also loaded a lot of other languages I didn't check. Too much of a coincidence that multiple users have had this problem.

You're in a thread nearly a year old. There were some issues with earlier versions of Express deleting voice files but I've updated numerous units now with no problem. Can you confirm that you're running the latest version of Express, v3.0.9?

The latest version of Express (3.0.9) has corrected this issue. Please refer to the following FAQ for replacing voice files.
Why are there missing or corrupt voice files on my nuvi, dezl, RV, Camper, LIVE or zumo? (http://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/simpleCase.htm?caseId={6edb3790-2444-11de-76c5-000000000000}&kbName=garmin)

I updated my 40LM via the Garmin Express software, which updated the basic software in the device in addition to the new maps ... and voila now my unit speaks in Spanish and now my ONLY spoken language options are Spanish and Portuguese. English has totally disappeared as even an Option for the speaking voice (English remains as an option for the written information).

I tried to connect back into the system via the Garmin Express software, clicked on "extra's" hoping that other languages would be there to download ... and NOTHING came up at all (or should I say "Nada"?) no matter which option I clicked on.

I really HATE spending MY time debugging someone else's software ... or spending MY time correcting a problem that shouldn't exist in the first place. I don't have time for that.

I am needing to buy a new GPS in the next two weeks to one that includes Canada but if this is an indication of the problems I am going to have with another Garmin (my current one is the 4th Garmin unit I have bought) I will definitely switch brands.

The easiest way to get voice files is to log into myGarmin, select the myDashboard tab click on Software Updates and scroll down to Optional Updates. select Voices and then whichever English version you want. MyDashboard will install them without using Express.

Mod, thank you for posting that last bit. I just updated mine this past weekend in anticipation of a trip and didn't think to check the languages until we started our trip to find out we were now learning Portuguese all weekend. We did learn a few words and had many a good laugh responding to her directions before finally muting her. I went into the "voices" option in the Optional Updates menu and clicked the file I wanted to download, it took two minutes. I tested it, and we're back in business.

Glad it worked for you. Hopefully the Express team are making (or have already made) the necessary changes to Express to ensure voice files aren't deleted in future.

I had a similar problem but with the German voice, I was advised by Garmin to re load the update, and I now have English.

Had the same problem. Ran Garmin's WebUpdater on computer obtained from their web site. There were multiple choice for English language. Choosing only English Language-American will not give you spoken voices on GPS. You have to choose one of them with the names (e.g., "Jack" for male voice, "Jill" for female voice, etc.). Once I chose one of the named voices when running the Garmin WebUpdater on my computer with the GPS unit connected to the computer, I am getting the voice prompts. Sounds like a bug in Garmin's program. Anyway, that solved my problem.

If you run Express, then select the Device tab and scroll down to the part where it says Language files, and choose the English ones you'll find you have all the voices necessary. It includes the TTS (text to speech) as well as the 'normal' voices.
