I have a pacemaker and was wondering if it interfears with the HR monitor. I had the same problem with a Polar HR Monitor that utilized the chest strap. I either get no reading or one that is "all over the board". Any other "bionic" runners out there with a similar problem???

Pacemakers may or may not induce cardiac irregularities, so itís difficult if not impossible to answer your question directly.

In my experience the Garmin heart rate monitor is reasonably accurate, but when it fails, the monitor does tend to go ďall over the boardĒ.

For example, there can be problems with extrasystole. This premature contraction of the heart muscle leads to the introduction of beats before their normal time in the natural rhythm, followed by a compensatory pause. When that happens a heart monitor can register an ever-increasing rate. In my case Iíve seen it climb to 250+ bpm, when I know for a fact that my heart is beating at no more than 100 bpm.

Extrasystole should not be confused with arrhythmic tachycardia.
