Try exporting the GPX file again and checking its track points, timestamps, and coordinate format for errors or duplicates. If the distance is still incorrect, compare it with the original route and re-import the cleaned GPX file into Garmin Explore.

Hi,

I am experiencing two issues with Garmin Explore when importing a GPX track file.

Issue 1: Incorrect track distance

When I import a GPX file containing a <trk> element, the distance displayed for the track is significantly wrong. The track should be approximately 126 km, but Garmin Explore shows ~310 km as length.

Notably, the elevation profile chart for the same track correctly shows the x-axis ending at ~126 km, which matches the expected distance. This suggests the app is calculating distance differently in the track summary vs. the elevation chart.

Additional observations:

The GPX file has been validated — coordinates are correct (WGS 84, lon/lat order) and the track consists of a single `<trkseg>` with no gaps.
When using "Copy as Course" on the imported track, the resulting course correctly shows ~126 km, but the course only retains two points (start and end), losing all intermediate shape points.
Adding `<ele>` elevation tags to the GPX track points has no effect on the elevation profile — the app appears to ignore them and use its own terrain data instead.

Issue 2: Track not visible in Garmin Explore desktop

The same GPX track file does not render in the Garmin Explore desktop application, while it does appear correctly in the Garmin Explore mobile app and on the Garmin map service (explore.garmin.com). No error message is shown — the track simply does not appear.

Troubleshooting already attempted

Downsampled the track: from ~5900 points to ~590 points (keeping every 10th point) — no change in behaviour for either issue.
Added `<ele>` elevation tags: to every track point with plausible values — the elevation profile was unchanged, confirming the app ignores GPX elevation data entirely.
Used "Copy as Course" as a workaround — this gives the correct distance (126 km) but discards all intermediate points, making it useless for navigation.

How Garmin Explore calculates track distance for imported GPX files?
Why the distance shown in the track summary differs from the elevation chart distance?
Why "Copy as Course" discards all intermediate track points?
What the rendering requirements are for the desktop application?

Garmin Explore Search Function Not Working

As the title says, had this for a week or two now when searching for anything on https://explore.garmin.com/Map in order to pin a new location on a map im continually getting "Something Went Wrong" as per the screenshot, tried contacting support who just kept using canned replies and not understanding what im trying to say, anyone else having this issue? Tried multiple devices, networks etc.

This sadly doesn't work at all, ive tried 3 different browsers, two different machines and multiple different networks, if you look at the network log you can see its timing out its on Garmins end, please could this be fixed its absolutley un usable as is

Yes, if the activities are still available in Garmin Connect, you can bring them back into Garmin Explore by exporting them from Connect and importing them into Explore. Garmin confirms there is no direct historical sync between the two services.

Can I restore deleted activities in Garmin Explore that are still in Garmin Connect.

I've deleted a lot of activities in Garmin Explore (I thought they were cluttering things up) but would now like to restore them. Is this possible from Garmin Connect - all my data is still there.

Maybe there is a way to reset the Garmin Explore app/account so that it starts again and syncs all my historic data?

Tried both Chrome and Edge browsers on Windows 11. Used normal and incognito mode. Tried names and zip code searches. Nothing worked. Still get the "Something went wrong" error message. Please help.

I first experienced this problem back in August. I did speak to a Garmin support agent who said Garmin was aware of the problem and I would be notified via email when it had been fixed. It now Sept 11. Problem has not been fixed. They're really cramping those of us who have become accustomed to using web-based Explore to help locate new destinations for our Garmin GPS.

Hi, thanks. This post is more about software than hardware. Explore only syncs with a very small number of gps devices. If you want to see a map of all of your other garmin activities from their other devices then the official response from garmin is that you export from Connect and import into Explore. Im just pointing out that this doesn't work.

For anyone thats interested, Statshunters will display a map of all of your garmin activities that have synced with strava 👍

Want to look at your Garmin activities in Explore? Good luck. I have wasted hours on this and am getting nowhere.

The only way to do this (if the activity is not already on one of the few products that syncs with Garmin Explore) is to export all activities from Connect and then import into Explore. You have to request this export and a few days later you will get a link for a file that has all of your Garmin info. Navigating through this file you find a number of folders that have .fit files. You need to convert these manually and then import them into Garmin Explore.

Things that go wrong:

1 - Why do we have to do this at all? What isn't this synced automatically from all devices between Connect and Explore? Strava does this with Garmin data, why cant Garmin?. Why does Connect and Explore use different file formats? Why why why..

2 - When you download your fit files most of them are 1Kb in size. No idea what these are but they are not activities.

3 - The only way to convert the fit files to gpx for Garmin Connect is to download a converter from a third party and write a batch file to convert all of the fit files (otherwise you have to do them manually one at a time)

4 - When you have done all of this the next step is to import a batch of converted gpx files into Explore. What you find out then is that contrary to the Garmin instructions, the Explore website only accepts one upload file at a time. So after wasting all this time you are basically stuck with no reasonable way forward (unless you import all files one at a time, i have thousands)

5 - There is no process to stop duplicates occurring in future imports.

6 - The export from Garmin contains no useful information such as Ride name etc.

I am so over Garmin, every year they seem to get worse while the rest of the industry is producing increasingly competitive solutions. Garmin nowadays reminds me of GoPro, relying on their brand instead of improving their products and support. A rubber ring on my Garmin chest heart monitor perished this year and was only a couple of years old. The only solution Garmin could offer was to buy a new heart rate monitor from them. Its getting ridiculous.

You don't mention what device you're using, but with my GPSMAP H1 I sync my activities with both Explore and Connect. I've paired my device with both the Explore app and the Connect app, and after I finish my activity it is synced with Explore and it will end up in Connect (either via WiFi or via the phone connection). So no manual uploading or downloading needed.

So this might work for you as well.

Feature Parity between the Web version of maps and the iOS/Android versions

Seeing that Garmin has abandoned support for Basecamp, I am leaning more on Explore. One aggrevating problem with the web version of Explore is that it does not have feature parity with the mobile apps. For example, if I want to add color to tracks for better visibility on the map, Garmin support documentaion advises to go to the app version of the product and change the color there. This is dumb. I am using my desktop to plan a trip, and using the web version. I do not want to use my phone! Basecamp supported this. What is Garmin's plan to step up and properly support their web product?

I've created 6 courses so far using the Garmin Explore mobile app (Android). When I go to explore.garmin.com/Map on my laptop (Chrome on macOS) and click on Library > Courses, I see the courses I made. When I click on one of the courses, the map is supposed to go to the location of the course and show the blue outline of the course. For some reason, that only works for 2 of the 6 courses. For the 2 courses that work properly, the map skips to the location of the course and I see the blue outline of the course. For the other 4 courses, the map skips over to the location of the course but there is no blue outline.

I tried to troubleshoot this a little by opening Developer Tools in Chrome where I can see under the Console tab that there is a JavaScript error anytime I click on one of the 4 courses that don't work properly. The error is

> No click point or valid element provided for openCoursePopup in map.js

For the 2 courses that work properly, I don't see this error message. Not sure if that in helps pinpoint the problem in any way, but sadly that's all I've got so far.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

P.S. - I tried to post this exact same question a few minutes ago, but it never appeared, so I'm trying one more time. Sorry if I end up double posting. Lots of technical issues happening here apparently.

It seems this type of error is something in the Garmin system because I have had multiple instances where my activities are delayed showing up in Explore Web. Some for a few hours, some for a day or more, one time almost a week and one time everything else like the end points were visible but the colored lines that show the activity never did show up. That one was "sent to the upper level" techs at Garmin Support and they never did figure it out.

OK, strangely enough, I'm now able to see 5 of 6 courses in explore.garmin.com/Map. I didn't do anything particularly noteworthy. It just started working. There's still 1 course that doesn't show up on the map, but at least I have 5 out of 6 showing up now. Not sure I would call this an "Answer", but it's progress.

I don't have a Social tab when I go to the Explore website, but I did try going to explore.garmin.com/Social. That redirected me to a page where I can choose to enable either "LiveTrack" or "MapShare". As of this very moment, I have not enabled either of these services. There shouldn't be any filtered data to clear. To confirm, I clicked on "Filter MapShare Data" button and it looks pretty clear to me. There are no collections boxes checked, and there's nothing in the "Date" field.
