Garmin ISM and the settings.fit file are hardcoded to 50bpm after syncing with Connect

A couple of months ago, I posted on the Index Sleep Monitor forum with a detailed write up detailing how the ISM when compared to other Elevate V5 watches, records higher heart rate and lower HRV.

When inspecting the ISM's "settings.fit" file, Resting Heart Rate is set to 50 bpm. The ISM seems to rely on this RHR setting as the device's "true north" to correct for when there is poor signal.

I created python code to specifically target the settings.fit file and successfully changed the resting heart rate field to my true value. What I found is that, upon syncing, it defaults back to 50 bpm. It seems it might simply be a server-side issue, not the device itself.

I can confirm that FW 3.91 did not improve the heart rate detection/calculation issue. So, as of now, any heart rate data measured by the ISM will be high for users with a RHR of less than 50bpm. I cannot confirm how the algorithm changes the beat detection measurements for users with a higher RHR.

It is clear, at the very least, that there is an issue with Garmin Connect pushing incorrect RHR data to the ISM. The question is, if this sync issue is corrected, will it improve the RHR and HRV numbers to align them with other Elevate 5 devices?

Feature Request: Allow video animations in custom workouts

Hi everyone,

I really love the pre-made Garmin workouts that include exercise animations—they are great for keeping proper form. However, like many of you, I prefer creating my own custom strength routines in Garmin Connect.

Right now, when we build a custom workout, we lose those helpful animations on the watch. It would be an amazing upgrade if Garmin allowed us to view the video form guide directly on the wrist during our own custom sessions.

This feature would make the custom workout builder infinitely more useful.

Hi Garmin Team,

I would like to report a problem regarding challenge badges and rankings.

Over the past few months, I finished several Garmin challenges in 1st–3rd place. I also received confirmation emails from Garmin stating my final placement in those challenges. However, the corresponding badges/rewards were never added to my account.

Because of this, I would like to ask if someone could please check whether there is an issue with my account or with the badge system itself.

I can provide screenshots of the confirmation emails and challenge details if needed.

My garmin watch disappeared in a hotel. The next AM my phone synched in the lobby. I contacted GARMIN and asked if they could (like most every other manufacturer) alert me if the serial number was re-registered. All I got was different versions of no. They did not help me at all and in fact noted only on my website that it was reported lost or stolen. In the unlikely event that I do recover my watch I suspect I won't be able to use it.

I keep saying I won't get another Garmin and I'm not sure why I keep getting one.

Connect(app/web) cannot add new event

I can't earn the "Thanks for Sharing" Badge. I have tried sharing multiple activities, and yes they were all set to public, and have not been able to earn the badge. A friend of mine has earned the badge by having a public activity, press share and copy link. When I do it, no badge awarded. I have tried using both the app on moible device and the website via pc. I have tried deleting cookies and reinstalling the app. still nothing. any ideas what I am doing wrong?

Web based course designer now very buggy

I use Chromium on a Raspberry pi5 (8GB ram) running stock Bookworm.

Website course designer has worked very well for years.

Now with the new version I get regular crashes while adding points. The screen goes white and I can't do anything with the map, but the menu still works. So I have to start again. It does it randomly.

There used to be a very useful reverse course facility that was able to reroute around roundabouts. Now when I reverse the start & end points it makes no attempt to reroute the roundabouts and when I attempt to move points or add & move points on the roundabouts, road rerouting automatically takes over and draws lines everywhere seemingly trying to - well, who knows what.

When selecting my British postcode as a start point, it no longer properly centers on my house. So after zooming in, I then have to drag the screen around to find my house.

I know we can't go back to the old website but please stop changing things for change's sake and in the process break what was a very good tool.

The CSV format data is exported in is nearly unusable. Am I missing something?

I have three Garmin devices and love them all, but I cannot for the life of me understand why (a) I can only download one screen of data at a time; and (b) why on earth the developers spread data over two lines; this makes the data effectively unusable when trying to manipulate it in Excel. I don't need it to look pretty. It's a CSV after all. But all data for any particular instance/measurement should be on a single line so that the user can do things like sorting. For example:

I want to raise a structural issue regarding the recent Garmin Trails feature and how it integrates with the Garmin Connect gamification system.

Currently, users earn points and badges for completing routes recognized as official "Garmin Trails". However, the underlying database for this feature is strictly geofenced and highly incomplete.

The Problem:

While the feature is heavily promoted, entire regions with massive Garmin user bases and highly active outdoor communities are completely excluded. For instance, testing the Trails feature in major European hubs like Poland (incl. Warsaw, Trojmiasto, Tatras) and Spain (incl. Barcelona, Valencia) yields zero results.

The Product Flaw:

By tying global gamification mechanics to a geographically restricted, manually curated database, Garmin has created a broken product loop. Users in unsupported regions are fundamentally locked out of earning specific points and badges, regardless of their actual physical activity or the trails they cover.

This isn't just about missing map data; it’s about putting users who pay for the same premium devices and ecosystem into unequal conditions based purely on their location, rather than their athletic achievements.

Questions for the Product Team:

Is there a transparent roadmap for rolling out the Garmin Trails database to the rest of Europe (specifically Poland and Spain)?

Why is the gamification system hardcoded to a closed, incomplete database instead of leveraging Garmin's own Popularity Routing or OSM trail data, which covers these regions perfectly?

Are there plans to decouple points/badges from the "official" Trails database so users outside the US/DACH regions can participate in the ecosystem on equal terms?

Looking forward to a technical clarification on how Garmin plans to resolve this feature disparity.

Corrupt fit file repair request

Hi team,

Data in the multisport activity .fit file for my half Ironman is corrupted.

I've tried all the suggested fixes on this forum (including donating to Gotoes for full access) except for Fit File Repair Tool (as I have a Mac I can't seem to access that). Each time there's still something wonky with the file (e.g., the swimming leg shows up as a cycling leg).

Would anyone please help me to fix this?

In the past, I was able to add running shoes, specifying the model as "Hoka Mach 6 46.7", i.e., indicating the size, whether the item is wide or not, and even a specific model. Unfortunately, the model field now appears controlled by a sparsely populated picker where the closest thing is "Mach X". Is there any workaround to circumvent the picker?

Single wrong Resting Heart Rate data point from new device

Dear other Garmin users.

My girlfriend and I ran into an interesting problem. She took over my old Venu 2S instead of her original Lily and I stupidly did not reset it previously.

So now my lower resting heart rate is stored in her Garmin Connect for the single day, all previous days are unaffected and the new one will be calculated based on the new measurements.

Can you somehow manually change this single data point?

We are happy for any suggestions! Thanks in advance.

Courses page discovery: mini-map cards, persistent area filter, hide toggle

Posting this as a new thread — prior discussions on Courses page usability have all been locked despite the problems persisting through 2026.

I'm not a power user with a large library of saved courses. I just tried the Courses feature for the first time, looking for a community course in my area to ride, and the discovery experience is hard out of the box.

Use case

I'm based in Los Angeles. I opened Courses on the web to find a community-created route I could ride this weekend. Almost all the markers on the map are other people's public courses — and that's where the difficulty starts.

The compounding problems

1. Map clutter at popular start zones. At any popular intersection in LA, dozens of community-course start markers stack on top of each other and become unreadable even at moderate zoom levels.

2. Zoom forces a bad tradeoff. Zoom in close enough to read individual markers near a start point I'm interested in, and the route geography goes off-screen — I can no longer see where each course actually goes. Zoom out enough to see route shape, and the map turns into a sea of overlapping markers while the sidebar list balloons to hundreds of entries.

3. List thumbnails don't show location. Sidebar previews show only the abstract shape of the route line, with no geographic context. I can't tell where a course passes through without clicking each one.

Even with the current filters (activity type, distance), as a new user I'm not able to pick a course efficiently. The barrier isn't "too many of my own courses" — it's discovery on the public catalog.

Three concrete suggestions

1. Real mini-maps in the list cards instead of abstract line shapes. A small static map tile with the route traced on geography would let me identify candidate courses by location at a glance. Highest-leverage change because it tackles discovery without any new filter UI. I haven't seen this proposed in the prior locked threads.

2. Persistent "area of interest" filter. Let users draw a rectangle on the map and save it to the profile, so the list and markers stay scoped to that area across sessions — no need to re-zoom on every visit.

3. Hide specific courses from view. Once I've reviewed a course and decided it's not for me, give me a way to remove it from my visible list and markers, persisted to the profile. After 10–20 of these, the page becomes much more navigable.

Ultra run - use more than one pair of shoes in a single activity

It seems Garmin has not solved the problem of adding e.g. two pairs of shoes (gear) to a single running activity and assign the correct milage to each pair of shoes.

So in my case a 86k run where I did 55k with one pair and 31k with another pair because I had to change them. I don't want to change the activity type from trail run to something else.

Is there a way Garmin can take this as a feature request? I've seen an entry which is already six years old but the issue still persists. 😞

HR Zones

Has the ability to set up HR Zones been removed? I can't find it in Connect web or the app. Or is it just that I've changed to a Bryton HRM (because the Garmin ones are overpriced and don't last)? The Edge 830 head unit seems to pass on actual bpm data to Strava OK, but the HR Zone readout on the head unit tries to tell me I'm in Zone 1 or Zone 2 ALL THE TIME.

3D terrain maps

The 3D terrain activity viewer feature from connect+ does not have 3D terrain on desktop web browser, it's a paid feature that should work on web browser, seems kind of silly considering it works on smartphone, this could just be a me issue, or its because I'm using the brave browser.

Corrupt fit file that won't upload to Garmin Connect

I made a 90 km run on Saturday and altough the run is on my watch it doesnt sync with garmin connect. I copied the fit file from the watch and tried to upload it on garmin connect manualy but it always gives me error "An error occurred with your upload. Please try again.".

I saw that you can upload it to https://www.fitfileviewer.com/ and correct the fit file but when I upload it everything is green so I suppose the fit file is ok.
Can someone check it and tell me if there is something wrong with it?

Recent items in Nutrition list gone

When I click Find Food in both the web and android connect app of the food logging interface, the "All" list, which previously enumerated with recent food items now shows blank.

When I search for a food, previously items that I had selected recently would be prioritized in the list. Now it's as if I am starting completely from scratch.

Feature Request: Direct Auto-Sync Integration for Kinomap

Hi everyone,

I’m a frequent user of Kinomap for my indoor training sessions, and I’ve noticed a significant gap in the ecosystem that affects many users.

The Issue: Currently, Kinomap automatically syncs workout data to platforms like Strava without any issues. However, there is no direct API integration with Garmin Connect.

Current Workaround: As of now, we have to manually export .fit files and upload them to Garmin Connect, or use third-party sync tools. This is cumbersome and often leads to missing data in our Garmin health and performance metrics (like Training Load and Recovery Time).

The Suggestion: I would like to propose a direct cloud-to-cloud integration between Kinomap and Garmin Connect, so that:

Indoor cycling and running activities are automatically synced to Garmin Connect.
Workout data is fully integrated into the Garmin ecosystem (Body Battery, Training Status, etc.).
The need for dual-recording (starting the activity on both the watch/Edge and the app) is eliminated.

Given Garmin’s leadership in the fitness space and its existing compatibility with various hardware, an official API partnership with Kinomap would be a huge quality-of-life improvement for the community.

Does anyone else here use Kinomap and would like to see this feature?
