: I imported my body fat percentage from fit bit …. Will it take that body fat measurement that I imported ( not from garmin scale ) and use use it in its algorithm to calculate calories burned or will it just be the same as if I never imported new data ?

Body fat percentage that’s imported / does the algorithm pick up on tjis ?

  • You can enter a reference value manually in the Connect app at any time.
The following is written in the help (translated from German here):

    Setting up body composition data
If you want to update the reference values for the body composition data measured by the Garmin Index S2 smart scale, use the 'Set up body composition data' setting. You should only update these values with recent measurement data from a reliable source, such as a DXA scan or other recognized body composition method.
Once you have entered the new body composition data and saved the changes, this information will be used as reference points for calculating new values when you weigh yourself on the Garmin Index S2 smart scale.„

Imported Body Fat % is indeed used instead of BMI in algorithms using BMI, such as for example the Fitness Age. I am not sure though whether BMI and/or Fat% is used for the Calories calculation. Many algorithms only use the total weight, and as far as I can find, Garmin does not mention BMI or Fat% in relation to Calories. However, once you import the body fat%, you'll see whether your Resting Calories change the next day or not. It is easier to test the influence of fat% with the Resting Calories, because unlike Active Calories, they are constant as far as the weight (or perhaps the fat%) does not change. Let us know what you find.

  • Thank you so much for the information! Yes I always wondered this however I do not have a scale that can import my body fat so I have been testing it with Fitbit and it appears that my resting rate is the same if I change my body fat or not I assume that many fitness trackers have not built this into their algorithm that would give you your overall calories burned just my guess but I definitely will test it out on Garmin!

  • Thank you I def going to test this out !!!

  • Thank you !! I will def run some test and let ya know. I know this stuff is nitty griddy and in the weeds a bit but very fascinated on how close these trackers can get ( I know nothing is perfect ) !
