I am using the Tanita BC 1000 in conjunction with a Garmin Edge 800 and use a Mac, with the services of Safari, to access Garmin Connect.

The ‘out of box’ experience was excellent, pop the batteries into the BC, hitting Settings on the Edge and selecting Weight Scale on the displayed menu achieved a rapid ANT+ connection.
The ANT+ signal is stronger than advertised, though of course it is necessary to be close enough to step onto the BC in order to make use of it.

Uploading the collected Health Data from the Edge was also faultless and amending the original ‘guesstimate’ of my weight was easily corrected using the Manual Input ‘button‘ on the Connect page.

My main issue is that the Health Data Values, on the left hand side of the Connect Graph, are unexpected, repetitive and seemingly inconsistent for the constituents indicated below:-
Weight: Levels show as e.g. from the bottom; ###.7; ###.7; ###.8; ###.8; ###.8; ###.9; ###[+1].0; ###[+1].0; ###[+1].0; ###[+1].1:
Bone Mass: Similar type of scenario to that shown above for Weight.
Physique Rating: All levels show the same Value.
Visceral Fat: Similar type of scenario to that shown above for Physique Rating.
All the other constituents seem satisfactory.

Lack of Mac Software for the BC and inability to store other than current Health Data on the Edge prohibits full use of the gathered information when not connected to the internet. Needing the Health Data available when visiting the Doctors this information has to be copied and pasted to make full use of it. The Copy and Paste operation is rather ‘messy’ to say the least, indicating that a means of Exporting the Data covering [say] the last month is necessary.

Perhaps I am repeating a subject already well discussed or have missed something?
Is there any ‘news’ regarding the BC Mac Software?
All input will be much appreciated.

Edit: Health Values Update 6th July 2011
Uploading further Health Data has corrected the Weight Values, on the left hand side of the Connect Graph.
Bone Mass: Still has a similar type of scenario to that originally shown above for Weight.
Physique Rating: All levels still show the same Value.
Visceral Fat: Now showing a similar type of scenario to that originally shown above for Weight.

RE: Tanita BC-1000 and Garmin Connect

You can load directly from the scale to Tanita's Healthy Edge software, using the ANT stick. This works for PC only; note thatTanita does not have a Mac version of their Health Edge software.

But I think that you need a Garmin device to get your data into Garmin Connect. In order to load directly from the scale to the Tanita Software you must first temporarily turn off the Garmin ANT Agent software (which is what loads from Garmin device to Connect and/or Training Center).

RE: Tanita BC-1000 and Garmin Connect

I only have edge 705

-Damon-,

Now that it appears you've added the functionality of deleting data points, what are the chances you could change the code to allow for multiple readings in the same day?

I have a 310xt and the Tanita BC-1000, and I could be mistaken, but it seems that the Garmin connect health tab only records one scale reading per day, over-writing any previous readings in the day with the most current. Is this correct? Can it be changed?

Maybe this is overkill, but I would like to track weight fluctuations over the course of a day (weigh-in morning and evening), as well as before and after workouts. I'm particularly interested in tracking H20 Percentages in this manner.

Can anyone help me see / read / track multiple health data points in the same day?

Wirebook / DC Rainmaker, any thoughts / comments / suggestions?
My problem is that I have an erroneous date, which is 2 years before the scale was even invented. 7-30 days is insufficient date-span to measure these parameters in a meaningful way, but if I select "see all data" all my real data is scrunched up on the right-hand side. Come on, Garmin, people have been complaining about this problem FOR A YEAR.

Currently, there isn't a way to delete the erroneous data point.

As for the graph's date range, it should be changing between 7-30 days. You may need to clear your temporary internet files. If the problem continues, please let me know what operating system you are using, internet browser and browser version.

Is there a way to clear out that erroneous data point? At the moment, it makes all of the graphs completely useless - and in many ways defeats the purpose of tying in Garmin Connect. (I'm temporarily ignoring the fact that switching between 7 days and 30 days doesn't actually change the graph date range at all...)

I'm assuming this is stored in a database, why not simply set a max limit value for pounds to be nothing greater than 999 pounds? Just set the database to accept but silently drop that data entry attempt (thus avoiding any errors on the client). The maximum weight limit of the BC-1000 scale is 440 pounds - so you don't have to worry about any 1001 pound folks coming along and being upset that the data field doesn't enter in correctly.

Or a simple DB script job that grooms the database nightly for values of 1,000 pounds and trims them.

Thanks,

We haven't released an update for the FR60 yet that mentions a change with the Tanita BC-1000.

I would make sure your FR60 is up to date, along with your Garmin Communicator Plug In. To check the software on your FR60, please go to your Main Menu > Settings > System > About and the top line should end in 2.40. If it ends in 2.30, you can download the latest update from here.

To check your Garmin Communicator Plug In, please visit this page. That page will let you know if you have the latest version, and it makes sure its working properly. If it needs to be updated, there will be a link for the update on that page too.

If everything is up to date, or if the FR60 uploads a high weight value after updating everything, please let me know what computer operating system you are using, along with what internet browser and browser version you are using to upload the data.

You've essentially made that feature usable for people who only have one of two Garmin GPS receivers AND one particular model of scale. I have the bc-1000 and four Garmin GPS receivers. I'm not buying a fifth JUST so I can use your health tab. The scale CAME with a Garmin branded ANT stick...wtf is up with that?

If you're not going to open that feature to anyone, then why have it at all? I can only imagine that less than 1% of GC users can really use the health tab at all. Tracking ONLY weight on the site is kinda dumb. While it may be unique for a website, it's certainly not unique when you take computer software into consideration.

I totally agree. I've been a fan of Garmin and had so many of their GPS products since before the "selective availability" was removed from the satelites in may 2000 - giving us "millitary grade" accuracy :).
Their support, hardware (and software for devices) was always excellent. A friend got his old eMap run over... he got to buy a new one for a fraction of the cost.
Garmin spent barely nothing on advertising, but put the money into excelling support and word on the street was that they were reliable. Period.
Calling support now is a nightmare compared to a few years ago. Have Garmin become a victim of the profit monster too?

Ever since they went online, it's taken a turn for the worse. I'm not impressed with either Garmin Connect nor GTC. A 16yr old coder nut could probably do better than Garmin in the software department at the moment. Edge 705 firmware revisions 2.6 and 2.7 last year was pretty dodgy too.

How difficult is it to implement a change to allow users to delete a datapoint in the health tab? How disappointing is it that they introduce this functionality without even considering it?
Did they expect the datasource always to be 100% correct?

If the community had been included in a beta - they would have got feedback pretty quick.

I probably won't keep my new Tanita bc-1000 scale.. the integration that would have been added value to me is just not there.
I'm sticking with my Edge though because it's still a beautiful piece of machinery.

All that said - I'm not preaching Garminism like I did a few years back though. Someone try to quantify that into $$$..

(I'll stop rambling now :))

RE: Tanita BC-1000 and Garmin Connect

Spurious values as well

I too have the same problem where the weight value is erroneous (65535) and I've simple resorted to temporarily editing the weight values on those dates if I need to see a longer term chart. The changes are not permanent unfortunately.
The capability to retroactively edit these would be good (or have the software make a call to discard what is obviously an incorrect weight).

Even if not for incorrect data points from the watch, but rather from me.

For example, I often will take a quick measurement pre and post run to see how I am with respect to hydration. These aren't generally 'valid' with respect to my average weight across a period of time (month, etc...), but will really mess up the graphs and my tracking of data.

Becaue the BC-1000 has no simple onboard display to look at weight without uploading to GC (meaning, I have to sync FR-60/310XT), the weight will automatically be uploaded.

A simple function to delete data points would be awesome.

RE: Tanita BC-1000 and Garmin Connect

Incorrect Weight

I too have the issue of the Tanita BC-1000 sending an incorrect weight which has completely blow out my weight graph. I attempted to manually add the correct weight for that date, but the incorrect weight comes back. If you are unable to afford end-users to correct the date & weight, then it would be greatly appreciated if you could offer the Customer Support of removing the incorrect data for end-users who have been wrong by no fault of their own.

I simply love my Garmin GPS watch, and I was loving the Tanita BC-1000 until it made me weight 655 kilos on December 5th.

All the best, Dean

RE: Tanita BC-1000 and Garmin Connect

Talk about limiting your client base.....

From: Jesse Roach <jroach@tanita.com>
Subject: Tanita Question / BC-1000

Hi Steve, Here are answers to your questions:

Currently the BC-1000 does not communicate with the FR305 Garmin watch, only the FR60 and 310xt models have the scale function.

The BC-1000 is only available in the US and Canada through US retailers and www....

Also, the scale does not talk to MAC computers, but can communicate to Garmin Connect through the FR60 or 310xt downloads.

For those of you out side the US tuff..

RE: Tanita BC-1000 and Garmin Connect

We are aware of this problem and are currently working to correct it as quickly as we can.

As for the other fields under the Health tab, there isn't a way to manually change that data, or manually enter that data. At this time, we do not have any plans to allow users to manually enter data, other than weight, under the Health tab.

-Damon-

That's a terrible shame.

RE: Tanita BC-1000 and Garmin Connect

We are aware of this problem and are currently working to correct it as quickly as we can.
Maybe it already does and my PC isn't compatible (running Windows 7 - which seems to be compatible with most devices that are compatible with XP).
