&lt;p&gt;Yes it can, but it cannot be really easily and reliably measured during swimming (and currently it is not measured by any Garmin model, AFAIK). Also, getting the VO₂max value from hiking is very inaccurate. You need to run, or do some cycling with power meter to get a more reliable VO₂max value.
