I’ve done at least three different Jeff Galloway training plans and they ALL have the LONG RUN AS 0.5 mile RUN then 0.25 WALK. this is distance based so you can walk as slow as you need to recover. These run are as short as 2 miles in the 5k plans to as long as 14 miles in the Half Marathon plan.
I just start a Galloway plan on garmin and it has a long run WITHOUT interval. This against the Galloway philosophy. Use intervals 0.5/0.25 miles and repeat 4 or 14 times.
I used Jeff Galloway training on Runkeeper before in 2012 to 2016 and then moved to Garmin. This is my first plan on garmin. I hope the suggested runs improve.

RE: Garmin Training Plans - Run Walk Run confusion

I find them to lead to risks of injury. The pacing and training load is way to heavy for novice runners. Some of the instructions are too vague to be pf any use. Especially the benchmark run telling you to run ”hard”. All out, threshold pace, maximum effort? Then it uses the same run to structure your workouts. I get some suggestions to do 45minute hill repeat sessions on day 3 of my 16 week program, even though I specifically state that my current fitness level is novice.

My suggestion for novice runners, or more older runners to steer clear of these and maybe find some mpre simple plan from training peaks.

RE: Garmin Training Plans - Run Walk Run confusion

Thanks!

No. As far as I can see it just gives these long runs. No guidence or anything.

What I did notice is that the goal tempo exercise will get longer, when you skip the long runs. The last goal tempo run was 10x times instead of the normal 6x times.

I was surprised by this. That is a nice feature. I simply don't always have the time to do these long runs.

Ad I guess the way you are supposed to do the long runs is like the goal tempo exercise. High intensity run followed by a walk. But I still don't understand why Garmin didn't program that.

Good luck with your running!!

Great to know you make a new version to cover “Long Run” and explain the methodology of Jeff RunWalkRun. As Garmin only shows details of next 3 workouts, I mis-think to apply all RunWalkRun in all run workouts. Anyway, I tried new version in my week 7 Easy Long Run today (see above picture). It succeeded and worked smoothly. Many thanks!

The screen display not only shows Run and Walk with timers but also the remaining distance! It is very helpful and informative!

Please consider to add “pace” as 3rd information as to remind or more easy to keep constant speed during run.

One issue is loop in settings if further changes data field. After I set up new 1 layout display, if I amend data field and finally select your app again, it has to go to settings which show two options- Vibrate and Play tones but I am unable to finish the settings by press any buttons even “back” button. In some cases, I need to power off my 255 (or wait until it will return after certain time 😩).

This is helpful. By default the data field will only turn on alerts during the " Run Walk Run - Long Run" workouts. But if you are doing a time goal training they don't seem to introduce those until much later. There is a new version of the data field available that *should* allow you to use the alerts with standard "Long Easy Run" workouts now too. You will need to turn it on in Settings > Advanced Settings > "Enable Run Walk Run with Long Easy Run workouts".

It is not the default because the training program wants people to run normally for the easy runs and then start to introduce specific Run Walk Run workouts later. But many people want to try out the alerts earlier than that, so it is now an option with that setting.

I hope it works for you! I traditionally have used the run/walk alerts for years. I thought when it mentioned Jeff G. - it would actually conform to what he has taught. If I could modify the workout - I could put in the intervals. I tried running two watches - one with my standard run/walk and the Garmin with the workout. Too much concentration on electronics! I do like when the workout is over and I press resume, it picks up the run/walk alerts without skipping a beat.

RE: Garmin Training Plans - Run Walk Run confusion

After month of similar frustration I managed to find this:

https://www.garmin.com/en-US/blog/fitness/setting-runwalk-feature/

It's maddening the "Jeff Galloway" training plans don't mention this much less set up something similar. I'm still fighting with it because it seems if any other alerts (like heart rate zone, cadence, etc...) are set then the walk/run alerts won't fire.

My biggest complain with the "training plans" in general is they allow zero customization like setting warm up times to better match the physical geography I run in and just manually created my own plan, so IDK if it will work with the training plan as automatically provided but if you manually set thing up you can get walk/run alerts

RE: Garmin Training Plans - Run Walk Run confusion

My problem with the Jeff Galloway 1/2 marathon plan is its not run / walk! Take tomorrow’s workout - says to warm-up 10 minutes, run 6 miles, cool down 10 minutes. While doing the workout, it never gives alerts for my run/walk. I either need to have another app running to do the timing. Or skip the workout plan and let my watch do it as alerts. It should not be advertised as Jeff Galloway’s plan if it doesn’t do a run/walk.

RE: Garmin Training Plans - Run Walk Run confusion

Thank you for your suggestion. I posted this question about the lack of run walk pace a couple of days ago and accidentally came across your suggestion. I sa that the question was raised a couple of years ago. I wished the issue had been dealt with the issue within the two years.

Common sense says that a run walk pace should be included. It is in other parts for the Galloway Training Program. I will try your suggestion today.

RE: Garmin Training Plans - Run Walk Run confusion

I just started doing the 5K program and I looked up the table for my desired pace saw that according to the table in the description on the Garmin Connect App, I was to do 2 Mins Run and 1 Min Walk and I think that the acceleration and Glider drills will need to be incorporated as you transition from the walk and run. I am a rank beginner and I think each drill builds to a complete type workout. I watched the videos and read the stories and I will let you know how it goes.
