Garmin Connect and Android 10 (Q)

I just upgraded my Pixel 2 to Android Q, which released to the public today. Garmin Connect mostly works, although syncing does not seem to. The sync progress meter gets approximately 1/2 of the way around from the green dot then just spins without any progress. It has been like this for the past hour. I can force-quit the app and come back in, and the sync progress will resume at 1/2 but continue spinning indefinitely.

Some data points:

  • This is after I completed a bike ride activity.
  • I am on build 4.22.1 of the Garmin Connect mobile app
  • I sync my activities to Strava
  • I have a Fenix 5x plus v8.40 that is shown as “connected” in the app

Hope that helps with the debugging. FWIW I believe Android 10 is only in wide release for Pixel users right now.

  • I was okay for a while and the watch disconnected this weekend. Now there is NO WAY to pair it with the phone. It's a Forerunning 945 to a Google Pixel 3.  I have tried, without success, all the other obvious things: power cycling the watch, power cycling the phone, removing and trying re-adding the watch. Now I can't re-add the watch...

Update: Just tried to connect this morning, and it worked!  The only thing I can think of that may have changed is there was a security update for Android 10 on September 5th.  I swear I've tried connecting since then, but maybe I didn't have the security patch then.  I would suggest updating Android 10, removing the device from Bluetooth list on the phone, and removing the phone from the device.  After that, try going through the Garmin Connect setup again.  If that doesn't work, try uninstall/reinstall Garmin Connect.

Did you update your Pixel 3 with the Android 10 September 5th security update by chance?

  • I did (from looking at Android status). If related, is there a workaround? Do I need to do anything to allow this connection? I removed the watch from known devices. I also tried re-install Garmin Connect. Nothing worked.

How do I remove the phone from Watch?

  • I got in touch with Garmin and they are telling that what I have a "South East Asia" model and the only way around the current issue is to ship it back and wait for a replacement.

I'm in NYC and ordered from Amazon, on a page that said "by Garmin" so I have no earthly idea how I could have ended up with a South East Asia model.

Their answer was "Amazon is tricky".

Not sure how to remove phone from watch.  I was able to do so since I have a Garmin Edge bike computer.  When you go through setup, does it at least list the watch, and are you able to add it to the Pixel's Bluetooth list?

  • I had similar issues, Edge 520 on Pixel 3 XL & Android 10 wouldn't stay connected no matter what I did with Bluetooth settings, device restarts, etc.

Finally resolved this by deleting all the Garmin Connect app data and signing back in... finally got it to pair, register with Connect, and stay paired.

Make sure you're at the add device screen for your device in Connect before putting device in pairing mode, don't add via Android Bluetooth settings page.

  • This worked for me, too.

None of the answers here worked for me, but just in case this helps someone: what finally worked was agreeing to Garmin Connect collecting my location data all the time. I was previously selecting "only when the app was on" (new thing on Android 10) and apparently that's not good enough.

Tried everything you've said but can't get it to work. Have set watch to defaults, forgotten device in Bluetooth settings, deleted app data and cache, uninstalled and reinstalled the app, granted all app permissions.

Then try to connect in app via fresh prompts and it finds the device but fails to sync when I'm expecting to see a PIN on the watch.

I get prompted by a phone alert asking if I want to let the Connect app connect to my Forerunner 645 which I accept, but I wonder if that notification is breaking the process flow. I can't remember if that existed in the same way prior to Android 10.l
