Garmin Express (Mac) and Fenix 9 problem

Hi guys,

I'm having a problem with Garmin Express on Mac and my new Fenix 9 Pro.

Quick background on my setup: I've been using Garmin Express on Mac for a long time with my Epix Pro Gen 2 and my Edge 1050, and everything works flawlessly there, sync included.

However, when I connect my new Fenix 9 to the Mac, communication between the Mac and the watch (and vice versa) doesn't work. I can log the watch into Garmin Express and it does show up as connected (green dot). But right after the watch is detected, an error message appears saying content can't be synced — for example the records file or golf courses.

The real issue, though, is with the maps. When I switch to the Maps tab in Garmin Express, not a single map is checked as installed, it looks as if there's no map on the watch at all (but there are). If I select a new map to install, the download itself runs, but it aborts at 50% (this seems to be where transfer to the watch begins). It doesn't matter which map, already-installed ones or brand-new ones, none of them work.

Switching to a Windows PC, everything works fine: sync, installed maps show up correctly with a checkmark, and installing new maps works without any issues.

Back on the Mac: same error again. As mentioned, the old Epix and the Edge work fine on the Mac under this exact same setup.

So far I've tried a number of things without success: I fully uninstalled and reinstalled Garmin Express multiple times, including clearing the cache folders in ~/Library/Application Support/Garmin and ~/Library/Caches. I confirmed Rosetta 2 is installed, and I also granted Garmin Express full disk access.

I've also reset the watch to factory settings multiple times without any improvement, and I tried Garmin Express under a different user account on the same Mac — same error occurs.

Can anyone help, or does someone have an idea what might be causing this?

Impossible to download Maps with Garmin Express on Garmin Edge 540 Solar

Hi,

I wanted to download and install TopoActive Eastern Europe map on my Garmin Edge 540 Solar from Garmin Express on my Mac Tahoe 26.5.2.
I already had Garmin Cycle MAP EU 2022.11, Central and Garmin Cycle MAP EU 2022.11, West installed on my device since I brought the device.
After accepting the terms and conditions, the download does not start and displays the following windows :

I also tried on a Win laptop. The download starts, but after about 5%, it stops with the following message:
"Some changes not applied."

I deleted the old maps so the Garmin has approximately the full storage free. I have also tried different cables. My Mac has also a lot of free storage.

So how can I fix the problem?
Really need some help, i'm on a northern Europe trip and have now no map at all on the Garmin.

Upgrading maps on Edge 840

Garmin Express doesn't show Music for Forerunner 165 Music

I recently purchased a Forerunner 165 Music version. (FYI, I have been a Fenix 7 user for a long time. I have been familiar with Garmin Express quite well.)

When I connect the Forerunner 165 Music to the Garmin Express app on my Mac, it doesn't show the Music icon as the screenshot attached. Interestingly, I checked my Fenix and found it has a Music icon.

What am I missing? Do I need to install an additional app or something to enable the Music app?

I have used Garmin devices exclusively for my bike and motorcycle for decades. But I am completely frustrated and fed up with Garmin's utter contempt and lack of responsiveness to the Garmin Express for Mac issues with my 840. The number of issues, including freezing, lack of connections, download and sync issues, is driving me up a wall.

For the first time I am seriously thinking of simply selling the 840 and just going with Wahoo. The only thing stopping me is that both my wife and I have 840 head units with Varia radars, so the sunk cost of Garmin, and the high cost of switching, will make it an expensive proposition. And Garmin knows this, which is why they are so unresponsive to their users. But I have about had enough.

## Who This Is For
- macOS users (Windows users: just use Garmin Express, you'll probably be fine)
- Transferring large local MP3 libraries (50+ tracks)
- Garmin Express is broken, OpenMTP won't accept drag-and-drop, Android File Transfer is discontinued
- You're stuck with `libmtp` command-line tools

## The Problem

`mtp-sendtr` returns `New track ID: xxxxx` — looks successful. But after disconnecting and reconnecting, the songs are gone. Or worse: 2-5x duplicate entries appear in the watch's music library (ghost tracks), even though only one copy of each file exists on disk.

## Root Cause

**Garmin's MTP implementation has a ghost-entry bug**: once a filename has ever appeared on the watch (even after deletion via `mtp-delfile`), that filename is permanently remembered in the watch's internal MTP database. Sending a file with the same name again → the CLI reports success → the file is silently discarded.

Garmin's own documentation acknowledges this indirectly: *"Mac operating systems provide limited support for MTP file transfer mode. You must open the Garmin drive on a Windows operating system."*

## The Fix

### Three Iron Rules
1. **Use short, unique numerical filenames on the watch**: `A001.mp3`, `A002.mp3`... Never reuse a number.
2. **Bare send, no metadata flags**: `mtp-sendtr -q file.mp3 Music/A001.mp3`. Do NOT use `-t -a -l -g` flags — the Garmin watch reads ID3 tags directly from the MP3 file. Passing MTP metadata properties triggers `player does not support this abstract type`.
3. **Numbers are never recycled**: when deleting a song, mark it `deleted` in your index. Skip the number forever.

Garmin Express on Mac: During the update process, the device is connected and syncs. If there is an update (such as maps for example) the update is downloaded, but then at the point where the update ca be installed, Express asks for the device to be disconnected and reconnected - the device is already connected at this point, there is little logic to disconnecting and reconnecting it.

Garmin Express can very rarely find the device again after you reconnect it so you end up giving up on the update.

The enhancement request would be a potentially more beneficial approach, which would be to maintain that existing connection - you have the connection already in order to sync and realise there is an update - just maintain that working connection until 'after' the update is installed, it would make updating the devices so much easier and way more successful.

After the update is installed, you can then disconnect/reconnect at that point, and it won't matter as much that Garmin can't re-establish connections.

I open Garmin Express and Fenix 8 is greyed out; plugging the watch in does not make any difference; remains greyed out. Note my InReach and an earlier watch are not greyed out.

AI is suggesting a lot of 'major' rebooting stuff of the watch and app -- surely not, please!

I went to install Garmin Express on my Mac running MacOS Golden Gate (Developer Beta) and I received an error that I need a 64 bit Intel processor.

I'm on an M4 MacMini.

The forum has more than a few posts about not having an Apple Silicon version of the software. Is anyone listening?

If Gamin has an Xcode project, I'm happy to help with the port.
