I have used Garmin devices exclusively for my bike and motorcycle for decades. But I am completely frustrated and fed up with Garmin's utter contempt and lack of responsiveness to the Garmin Express for Mac issues with my 840. The number of issues, including freezing, lack of connections, download and sync issues, is driving me up a wall.

For the first time I am seriously thinking of simply selling the 840 and just going with Wahoo. The only thing stopping me is that both my wife and I have 840 head units with Varia radars, so the sunk cost of Garmin, and the high cost of switching, will make it an expensive proposition. And Garmin knows this, which is why they are so unresponsive to their users. But I have about had enough.

## Who This Is For
- macOS users (Windows users: just use Garmin Express, you'll probably be fine)
- Transferring large local MP3 libraries (50+ tracks)
- Garmin Express is broken, OpenMTP won't accept drag-and-drop, Android File Transfer is discontinued
- You're stuck with `libmtp` command-line tools

## The Problem

`mtp-sendtr` returns `New track ID: xxxxx` — looks successful. But after disconnecting and reconnecting, the songs are gone. Or worse: 2-5x duplicate entries appear in the watch's music library (ghost tracks), even though only one copy of each file exists on disk.

## Root Cause

**Garmin's MTP implementation has a ghost-entry bug**: once a filename has ever appeared on the watch (even after deletion via `mtp-delfile`), that filename is permanently remembered in the watch's internal MTP database. Sending a file with the same name again → the CLI reports success → the file is silently discarded.

Garmin's own documentation acknowledges this indirectly: *"Mac operating systems provide limited support for MTP file transfer mode. You must open the Garmin drive on a Windows operating system."*

## The Fix

### Three Iron Rules
1. **Use short, unique numerical filenames on the watch**: `A001.mp3`, `A002.mp3`... Never reuse a number.
2. **Bare send, no metadata flags**: `mtp-sendtr -q file.mp3 Music/A001.mp3`. Do NOT use `-t -a -l -g` flags — the Garmin watch reads ID3 tags directly from the MP3 file. Passing MTP metadata properties triggers `player does not support this abstract type`.
3. **Numbers are never recycled**: when deleting a song, mark it `deleted` in your index. Skip the number forever.

### If You Already Have Mass Ghost Entries

**The only fix: factory reset the watch.** There is no "rebuild music library" option. Deleting files via MTP does not clear the internal database.

After disconnecting and reconnecting Edge 840, Garmin Express not responding (stuck) for some minutes time and then doesn't recognize reconnected device.

Remove the requirement to disconnect and reconnect the device during updates

Garmin Express on Mac: During the update process, the device is connected and syncs. If there is an update (such as maps for example) the update is downloaded, but then at the point where the update ca be installed, Express asks for the device to be disconnected and reconnected - the device is already connected at this point, there is little logic to disconnecting and reconnecting it.

Garmin Express can very rarely find the device again after you reconnect it so you end up giving up on the update.

The enhancement request would be a potentially more beneficial approach, which would be to maintain that existing connection - you have the connection already in order to sync and realise there is an update - just maintain that working connection until 'after' the update is installed, it would make updating the devices so much easier and way more successful.

After the update is installed, you can then disconnect/reconnect at that point, and it won't matter as much that Garmin can't re-establish connections.

I open Garmin Express and Fenix 8 is greyed out; plugging the watch in does not make any difference; remains greyed out. Note my InReach and an earlier watch are not greyed out.

AI is suggesting a lot of 'major' rebooting stuff of the watch and app -- surely not, please!

I went to install Garmin Express on my Mac running MacOS Golden Gate (Developer Beta) and I received an error that I need a 64 bit Intel processor.

I'm on an M4 MacMini.

The forum has more than a few posts about not having an Apple Silicon version of the software. Is anyone listening?

If Gamin has an Xcode project, I'm happy to help with the port.

Everything is Gone Even Their Activity Apps

Even the standard Apps were gone and had to reinstall them, including Glances. Got them in, rearranged everything and when i did my sync I got the null red flag. Nothing changed it so i had to go to setting and reinstall the update. So I assume it was the newest Garmin update.

Garmin you can do better than this and now i have to rearrange things and add my settings I want on my activites, like time, heart rate etc., anyone else have this problem, needless to say when I was at the gym last night with no activity to push on I have nothing.

GE Crashes When Installing Maps To M4 Mac Running Sequoia 15.7.7

Besides the hit or miss connection to GE using an Apple USB-C to USB-C cable, I can't download the map to my Mac, using Manage Maps feature in GE. It looks like it's going to work, but stall and crashes anywhere from 40% to 80%.

It did actually manage to download yesterday, but the map is locked, and I cannot find any information on how to unlock the file.

I assume the .gma file is the unlock code, but using MapManager didn't do anything to unlock the map, and MapInstall doesn't even show the XT2 I have plugged in.

I've done all the access to Files and Folders, and in fact gave GE Full Access yesterday, which was how 2027.10 showed up in Finder.

I'm at wit's end, and wish I had never gotten rid of my 595LM.

Ho acquistato di recente un eTrex 30x usato con una scheda installata. Ha funzionato perfettamente per due settimane, ma ora non riesce più scrivere sulla sua unità flash interna da Legge mappe, waypoint, tracce e percorsi presenti sulla scheda, ma si rifiuta di memorizzare waypoint o altri dati (comunica "errore del database"). Basecamp, invece, riesce a leggere i dati presenti sulla sd., ma l'eTrex no. Ho provato a formattare i file sull'unità interna e a sostituirli con le copie che avevo creato non appena ho ricevuto il dispositivo. Ho anche provato a eseguire un ripristino delle impostazioni di fabbrica. Sembra esserci in chip danneggiato o un altro problema software, ma non so cos'altro fare. Qualcuno ha qualche idea su come risolvere il problema. Grazie per qualsiasi aiuto.

I have purchased a Garmin Drivesmart 86 which I use with Basecamp and when updating maps on the 86 I no longer see the options to send to device, send to device and computer, send to computer only. If I connect my older 60 the options show. What am I missing?

Newly purchased CN Europe NTU map installed on device with Garmin Express version 7.24.0.0, but not on MAC IOS 12.7.6 for use with Basecamp.

Garmin Express doesn't show the added map on Updates and so I cannot use it to add to computer. How to add this newly purchased map to this computer?

Nowhere on purchase tab and clicking cloud install icon are there options.

I use Garmin Express once in a while to mainly get map updates. So, in between uses, many CIQ watch faces and apps that I have installed on my watch have been updated via the Connect IQ phone app.

However, when I connect the watch to my Mac and run Garmin Express, it shows that all these apps need to be installed!

After doing a sync and unplugging the watch from the Mac, the watch buzzes and shows a message like "app XXX was installed" and at the end of all that, the wrong watch face is displayed.

I don't understand why Express has anything to do with apps anymore since Garmin seems to have moved to relying solely on Connect IQ to do installs and updates. Is the left hand talking to the right hand here?

Why does map updates work on Garmin Express Windows but not Garmin Express Mac for same GPS device

I have moved from a Windows laptop to a MacBook and cannot get Garmin Express to update maps. I have followed all the steps in the video including switching on the removable volumes in Files and Folder settings. I also tried all the steps available online for my device. I did notice the Manage Maps button is not showing in Garmin Express. Because it updates without any issues on my husband's Windows 11 laptop that still has USB A ports, I assuming it is a MacBook issue. I tried using a USB A to USB C adapter on the MacBook using same GPS cable used in the Windows 11 laptop. I also bought a new USB mini to USB C cable for the MacBook but it had the same results as the adapter. My husband has considered moving to Mac too so I would like to try to determine what the difference is so I can resolve it.

I can't sync podcasts to my Forerunner 965 anymore. Express just tells me to open Apple Podcasts. But that changes nothing. And yes, I have plenty of downloaded episodes in the Podcast App.

garmin express won't connect to forerunner 945 on OS Tahoe

As seen above. It won't connect - Mac sees the watch, it charges, Garmin software just won't recognize it. Have uninstalled/reinstalled, restarted, etc - I have, in other words, done all of the things the first five comments will tell me to do anyhow.

Only possible issue I see is that the Garmin cable is USB 2.0, so I have to use an adapter/hub to connect it to any computer made in the last decade.

Unable to update maps

Perhaps others have had this problem. Device is a nuvi 3590LMT. Trying to get it to update map, using Garmin Express version 7.28.0.0 on iMac running Sequoia 15.7.4

Garmin Express recognizes device, but according to the help videos, I should see either a "Map Detail" link or a "Manage Maps" button. Neither seems to be present.
