Garmin Express version: 7.29.1

It's unbelievable that after almost a year and a half, Garmin developers haven't pulled themselves together and fixed the missing device icons in the app:

- FENIX 8 AMOLED: when I bought the watch in 09/2024, the icon in the app was OK. But out of nowhere it disappeared sometime in the spring of 2025
- FORERUNNER 970: the icon is not there from the beginning
- HRM 600: the icon is not there from the beginning

I'm getting my new Fenix 9 on Monday, so I'm curious, but I'm betting 90% that the icon will be missing again ...

I think I have worked it out. After the software update, Express says to disconnect the device. What it doesn't say is to power-up the device separately without using the computer. The device will then restart itself and install the update. It is now downloading the map update!

Garmin Express can't update map on nuvi 2597

I am using Express v7.29.1+6f36140f to update the City Navigator Europe map on my 2597. When I connect the device to my Windows 11 PC, Express recognises it and offers to install the Traffic Text, GLX, All Languages v2.20 as well as the 2027.30 map. I cannot select the map update on its own.

When I click Update Software, Express updates the Traffic Text, presumably, but the install doesn't continue to update the map. When I disconnect and reconnect the nuvi, I get the same options and Express does a software update but doesn't update the map.

I have tried changing the Installation Options, but always get stuck on the software update stage.

I was able to install the map for an older nuvi 205W onto the PC using Express, but can't get this to work with the 2597.

Any ideas?

Thanks for the prompt reply. The built-in storage says 2.69GB free of 7.02GB and the Kingston 32GB microSD card says 22.1GB free of 28.8GB, as seen by Windows when the Nuvi is plugged in and Express is running. That 7GB or so of used space is for the previous version City Navigator Map. I found the space used in Express under Tools and Settings. That shows Device Storage as 61% full, 2.89GB free, and SD Card Storage 23% full, 23.77GB free.

I wouldn't expect a problem with space, but if there was, I would download the maps to the PC and use MapInstall or similar. I don't normally have to do that with the 2597 (I think). However, the only Install button that is live is for the Traffic Text. If I hover the mouse over the Install button for the map, it says "The required software update must be installed before this one." The map file size is given as 11.36GB.

I can select Install to computer only, Update All, and it "installs" the Traffic Text only, maybe, restarts the Nuvi and we go round again. Actually, there is no indication from the Nuvi that it is updating anything, but there is no error message on screen either.

I’m not sure how much space the Europe map may take but what size memory card is being used and how much free space exists on the card?

it is almost comical how messed up and broken the 7 series is compare to the 6 series

except I am not laughing being stuck with this pile of bugs and broken features every day

almost every damn "feature" has some kind of bug on this watch, backlight, weather, sensor connections, everything

now why do the glances keep getting their order reset after I change and save them?

I suspect it has to do with a conflict between the watch as source for settings vs something in the phone app and they are fighting it out

Did Garmin fire all their best developers after 2020? is there just one developer that moves from watch to watch and is now just working on the newer 70/170 series?

Update from my side – I can now reproduce this reliably, and I think I know where it comes from.

Setup: fēnix 8 47 mm Solar, latest firmware, Garmin Express 7.29.x on Windows 11 25H2.

What I did today:
1. Installed a Connect IQ app (Spotify) on the watch through Garmin Express.
2. Later removed the same app through Garmin Express.

After each operation, once the watch was unplugged, my glance order changed: 62 positions moved after the install, another 16 after the removal. Only glances were affected – apps and activities kept their order.

Where it seems to come from:
The watch keeps its list of apps, glances and activities in GARMIN/Apps/OUT.BIN (visible over USB). When Garmin Express installs or removes a Connect IQ app, it writes a new complete list to GARMIN/Apps/IN.BIN, and the watch applies it after it is unplugged. I compared OUT.BIN before and after: the watch takes the glance order exactly from the list Garmin Express wrote. So the watch is doing what it is told – the new order is already in the list that Garmin Express sends.

In other words, Garmin Express does not keep the existing order from OUT.BIN when it builds the new list. It looks like it rebuilds the list in its own order. A possible hint: several built-in items exist on the watch both as an app and as a glance with the same ID, and those are among the entries that move.

When I installed and removed the same app without Garmin Express, the order stayed exactly as it was, which fits this explanation. It would also explain why it happens during bigger Express operations like firmware or map updates – if Express rewrites the app list then too.

Suggested fix: when Garmin Express writes IN.BIN, keep the entries in the same order as in the current OUT.BIN and only add or remove the affected app.

Workaround for others: keep a copy of GARMIN/Apps/OUT.BIN before using Garmin Express. It records your order, so at least you can see what changed.

I tried to send the Garmin Express logs with the code you gave me in August, but Express says the report can't be sent – maybe the code has expired. I've saved today's logs covering both the install and the removal. Could you send me a new code, or tell me another way to get them to you?

This also matches what I saw before: the reordering usually happened together with bigger operations in Garmin Express, like firmware or map updates.

Steps to reproduce:
- arrange glances on the watch in a custom order,
- install or remove any Connect IQ app via Garmin Express,
- unplug the watch and look at the glance loop.

I'm sending Garmin Express logs now with the code I was given.

Garmin Devices not recognized on Windows 11 computers since January 2026

I have a Nuvi 2455 that worked great for years. My Windows 11 computer will not recognize the Nuvi 2455. Basecamp & Garmin express work fine. It shows that I need updates for the GPS but it can't be viewed on the computer.

The following updates were installed on the computer:

I have used Windows 11 with no issues for years and sometime between Dec 025 & March 2026 something changed & windows will not recognize garmin devices. I have tried all fixes I could find; check for system errors, power settings, different cables, different computers, but none will now see the device. I can't update maps or system updates.

Looking for any suggestions to make system usable so I can upload maps to my devices

I’m seeing the same issue with Garmin devices on Windows especially after the recent 2026 updates. Hopefully Garmin can identify whether a Windows update or USB driver change is causing it.

Interesting: I launched Garmin Express today, and surprisingly, the HRM 600 icon appeared correctly (without me doing anything)!
But unfortunately, no icons for the F9, FR970, or Venu 4 yet :-(
