Garmin Express Crash During Startup (WIN 11)

The last few versions of Express (PC) frequently (>90%) fail to start without crashing part way through on my WIN 11 Machine.

I have multiple devices I need to manage and cannot because Express is so unstable, I spend hours, HOURS, trying to get it to run, almost never have any success.

What files do you need to diagnose?

Trying to update maps on Garmin Nuvicam... not enough storage problem

I have a new 32gb memory card which I inserted into the black card slot, not the orange highlighted slot which I believe is for camera footage storage.. I'm trying to update through Garmin Express and when I click on utilities tab it does show the 32gb card as recognized. When I click on install, I get a message that there is not enough storage space on the computer and I need 15GB of space and indeed, I do not have enough hard drive space on my actual laptop BUT under "installation options" I chose Device Only, not device and computer or computer only. How can I get the update to go only to the memory card on the Garmin and stop trying to download it to the computer as well?

What happened to the "Get More Apps" option when you clicked the "IQ Apps" section on any device listed? It's kind of hard to manage your apps when you don't have this option anymore.

Garmin Express ist wirklichj eine Katastrophe!

Eben wollte ich mein Edge 1040 auf Aktuaalisierungen checken.

GE gestartet.

Neuestet Version installiert.

Programm neu gestartet.

Es werden 8 Aktualisierungen für das Edge angezeigt; darünter die Karte 2026.11.

Allerdinges verbindet sich GE nicht mit dem Edge.

Mehrere Versuche, alle mit selbigem Ergebnis.

Dann ein weiterer Versuch auf dem Notebook.

Aktuelle Version von GE vorhanden.

Verbindung mit Edge hergestellt.

Alles aktuell; also auch keine 2026er Karte im Angebot

Absolut unverständlich, dass GE im Anschluss an die Installation der aktuellsten Version einen derartigen Stuss anzeigt.

Workaround for Garmin Express filling C: drive — junction point redirects map cache to another drive

Garmin Express caches downloaded map data at:

%LOCALAPPDATA%\Garmin\express\maps

This can silently grow to 10+ GB with no warning and no in-app setting to relocate it. Garmin's own support site confirms there's no supported way to change this path ("Unable to Change the Installation Location of a Map Update in Garmin Express for Windows").

Check current size:

Prerequisite — you need a second drive or partition. The fix below redirects the cache to a drive letter other than C:. If your system only has a single C: partition (very common — most consumer PCs ship this way), you'll need to create one first. This does not move or affect your existing Windows installation — Windows and all your programs stay exactly where they are on C:. You're simply shrinking C: to free up unused space at the end of the drive, then formatting that freed space as a new partition with its own drive letter (e.g., D:).

Short version: open Disk Management (right-click Start → Disk Management), right-click your C: volume → Shrink Volume, enter how much space to free (in MB), then right-click the resulting "Unallocated" space → New Simple Volume and follow the wizard to format it and assign a drive letter. This is non-destructive to existing data, but backing up first is always good practice before any partition change.

Fix — redirect via NTFS directory junction (works because Garmin Express only knows the AppData path, not the physical location):

Close Garmin Express completely first.
Move existing cache contents and create the junction (adjust D: to whatever drive letter you created):

mklink /J "%LOCALAPPDATA%\Garmin\express\maps" "D:\GarminCache\maps"

If the maps folder doesn't exist yet (fresh install, nothing cached), skip robocopy and just do:

mkdir "D:\GarminCache\maps"

mklink /J "%LOCALAPPDATA%\Garmin\express\maps" "D:\GarminCache\maps"

Verify the junction is live:

dir "%LOCALAPPDATA%\Garmin\express"

maps should show as <JUNCTION> rather than a normal folder.

From this point on, all Garmin Express map caching writes transparently through to the new drive — no further action needed, and Garmin Express has no idea anything changed.

With latest version GE v7.29 on Win11 and FW 31.20 on my Edge 1050, when I connect my 1050 and go to Manage Maps in GE, I don't see any maps at all as available for installation. See attached screenshot. With older versions of GE and/or older 1050 FW, I used to see maps available in GE. How can I get the maps to show - I want to install the map for Europe.

I still do not gat any Map options in Garmin Express, which updated to 7.29.0+46140687 today.

I uninstalled (with remove all data), rebooted PC, re-installed. Still same.

The solution given in above thread was to:

"If still experiencing this, please try the following steps and let us know how it goes:

Connect your epix Pro to the computer
Open the Garmin Folder
Delete the GarminDevice.xml file
Unplug from the computer and wait for it to boot to the main menu
Delete the device from Garmin Express
Re-add it to Garmin Express"

I have looked for the xml in my Garmin Folder (which is under Program Files (x86), W11).

Only xml there is: express.visualelementsmanifest.xml and does not contain any info possibly related the the device.

So stuck with that work-around too.

Please advice how I can manage the maps on my Edge Explore 2....

Can no longer put music on Garmin Vivoactive 5

I was able to upload music to my vivoactive 5 until the software update to version 17.05. Now when I load Garmin Express it is missing the music option.

The version in the About section is 7.29.0+46140687

I have tried updating Garmin Express and have hit a wall with this problem

I have tried removing all trace of garmin from the registry, uninstalled using microsoft and 3rd party apps and still cannot get this to install now

Cannot connect via usb with Forerunner 265

I have have been able to connect with Garmin Express for several years via Windows 11 and my Forerunner 265. Now all of a sudden when I plug my watch in via USB all I get is a charging notice on my watch but no connection to Garmin Express. I have tried different USB cable and cleaned connectors. Also shut down/start The problem seemed to have started after my latest update to Garmin Express (vsn 7.28.1).

I have not removed and reinstalled Garmin Express yet .. but waiting to see if someone can suggest another alternative.

I own three Edge 1000 head units. I have one which is stuck at "loading profiles". I did all of the normal file cleaning and reset operations. It's still stuck. I'd like to flash the firmware clean but cannot find the file nor does WebUpdater work anymore. Garmin Express does not give me an option to reinstall firmware.

Unable to update nuvi 3590LM because of internal storage

I'm trying to update my nuvi 3590LM because the road maps are out of date, I downloaded Garmin Express and connected my device to my computer and it says the there is not enough internal storage for the update. The internal storage on the garmin is at about 7.8GB out of 8GB, but I have a 16GB SD card in the device that is completely empty, I have formatted the SD Card, is there any reason why the program cannot download the update to the SD card?

I see lots of discussion about how various things on the computer causes slow download speeds when using Garmin Express. How can my computer have download speeds of ~95 Mbit/sec but the Garmin is only ~2.6 Mbit/sec? Explain this to me please!

glances keep changing order on a watch costing hundreds in version TWENTY-SIX of the firmware

it is almost comical how messed up and broken the 7 series is compare to the 6 series

except I am not laughing being stuck with this pile of bugs and broken features every day

almost every damn "feature" has some kind of bug on this watch, backlight, weather, sensor connections, everything

now why do the glances keep getting their order reset after I change and save them?

I suspect it has to do with a conflict between the watch as source for settings vs something in the phone app and they are fighting it out

Did Garmin fire all their best developers after 2020? is there just one developer that moves from watch to watch and is now just working on the newer 70/170 series?
