Yeah, that’s my understanding too, Garmin BaseCamp mainly switches between 2D and 3D viewing modes rather than having completely separate versions. Sometimes those display or rendering issues are tied to corrupted system files, graphics drivers, or leftover settings, so a clean Windows reinstall can unexpectedly solve problems that regular troubleshooting misses.

It’s similar to how some creative apps suddenly start working properly again after resetting corrupted components or reinstalling dependencies, especially with graphics-related tools. I just purchased a Lenovo Yoga 900 2 in 1 laptop. Basecamp 4.5.2 installed and ran initially, but when Win 10 updated the last time, Basecamp tries to start but quickly quits with no error message. A small window appears, but fades away too quickly to read. Basecamp runs fine on my Win 10 HP desktop. I've uninstalled and reinstalled Basecamp 4.5.2 with no success.

I am trying to create a database of ATV Trails where trail is its own GPX file. I have a couple hundred trails am am using lists to sort different types. Every time I close basecamp i get an error, and all my data is lost when i reopen it. i have tried making a backup before closing, but basecamp crashes every time i try to restore the backup. the only way i have been able to save my progress is by exporting all my tracks in a GPX format or transferring them to my device before closing basecamp. by doing this i lose all my lists though. I have uninstalled and reinstalled to no effect. i have tried restoring the backup on a different computer and it will not restore there either. i have tried this several times and get the same result. Any help would be appreciated.

Garmin is very strict about the proper formatting of gpx files. This goes as far as the proper order of information. An online gpx visualizer/editor might be able to read and then export the file in a proper format.

It appears the JaVaWa has a tool that will try to correct files that do not follow strict protocol. Do a search for JaVaWa and look under the Online tools for Converteer. When you get to the page click on the orange button at the top to upload and repair the file.

Database crash on exit combined with backup restore failure is a frustrating combination because the backup is supposed to be the safety net for exactly this situation. One thing worth trying is locating the BaseCamp data folder manually and checking whether the database file itself is corrupted or just the index that points to it because sometimes the underlying data is intact even when BaseCamp cannot read it through normal restore. Also worth checking whether antivirus software is interfering with the database write process on exit since some security suites lock files mid-write which causes incomplete saves that corrupt the database silently. Did the crashes start after a specific BaseCamp update or Windows update?

So I am creating a new database of all our local atv trails. I have been making and collecting .GPX routes from my Garmin 66i and from other users. I would import all the files I had into basecamp, edit everything to my liking, and the backup the database. The backup process gave no errors. When I exit basecamp, I would get an error. Next time I open it, my database and all tracks are gone. I tried to load my backup and it would say it was damaged and to try and fix it. When I say yes the only thing that was recovered was my Birdseye imagery. No tracks or folders from the database I had created.

I did this multiple times and continues to have the same problem. It was after a few attempts I took more notice of the error when closing basecamp.

To troubleshoot, I started importing only a few GPX tracks at a time, backup the data base, then exit. It began to exit with no errors. I continued to do this until I got an error when exiting again. It turned out it was a few specific . GPX tracks that would cause the problems. If i did not import them, I would not have any issues when exiting. There were about 5 of these tracks in total. There did not appear to be any issues upon importing these tracks, so not sure why basecamp did not like them. But everything worked normal if I didn't import them.

GPX files are not stored in the database. All data is stored in a file named AllData.gdb and folder info is stored in FolderData.gfi. Assuming ".GPX files" means "routes", can you provide any information that would help someone experiencing this crash issue to identify the problem data and the steps required to fix it? (eg: How did you identify the problem data? Did you delete a specific route, or the contents of an entire list?)

After a ton of trial and error, I found the problem was with a couple specific .GPX files in the database. For whatever reason, those files would corrupt the database when saved and it made it unrecoverable. Funny that they seemed to work fine in base camp until I saved the Database.

Who designed this nonsense????? All I wanted was a place to keep my devices updated. What an utter disappointment Garmin has become. I use Garmin GPS daily. I have ZERO interest in most of the things here! And Garmin does not care! no customer support.

US TOPO 24K CDs and Basecamp

I'm moving onto a new PC and wanting to use Basecamp with the maps I have on CD: "US TOPO 24K National Parks West" and "US TOPO 24K National Parks East". I'm able to run Setup on those CDs and they install successfully, but the maps don't show up in the Basecamp UI. I've installed the US Topo Maps and MetroGuide Europe from CD and those do show up in Basecamp, so I'm not sure what's different about the National Parks maps. Any advice on how to solve this would is appreciated.

I sounds like something is preventing writing to a database file which are AllData.gbd and FolderData.gfi located by default in "C:\Users\<computer user>\AppData\Roaming\Garmin\BaseCamp\Database\4.7" but can be anywhere as specified in general options. An unknown to me is whether Basecamp stores data in a temporary location during a session then writes it to the database files on close but if it does, that would explain the loss of data at close. Potential issues that come to mind are inadequate file permissions, syncing (eg: OneDrive or similar), inadequate storage space.

What is the error message?

I take it when you say uninstall and reinstall that's BaseCamp you're doing it to? Have you tried just trying with one track? Please report back with what happens when you do that.

Homeport 2.3.2 and marine charts

Recently I put another removable drive in a PC. That drive has (old) Garmin marine charts and street maps (IMG's) on it.

So on three different (and three different versions of Windows) Homeport 2.3.2 (which I know is obsolete) will no longer use those old marine charts. Except for the really old ones installed on HD (per street maps).

On two of the three PC's I "reset" Homeport 2.3.2 and NONE of the charts were recognised (some were beforehand but now the processing bar shows red before the charts disappear). They'd all worked in the past. On the third machine I can still see/select them but get an error message ("An error occurred when attempting to use the <chart name> Chart product") if any are selected. This also happened on the other two machines (before Homeport was "reset").

All removable drives are ok (verified via CHKDSK) and street maps (IMG's) on those drives are recognized and work. Only marine charts don't.

Comments?

PS: I tried a one of the marine charts that was already on the microSD card in my Oregon 600. It worked there. When the Orgeon 600 was put in "mass storage" mode Homeport 2.3.2 saw the loaded marine charts.

PPS: So it seems that the old "put IMG's on a removable drive" no longer works for marine charts but still does for street maps.

PPPS: I found a copy of Homeport 2.2.10 dated 9th November 2015 on archive.org. It has the same issue as above in a WinXP SP3 VM.

PPPPS: Good news. Connecting my (real) Oregon 600 made the marine charts on it work even when disconnected.

quando vado a collegare il gps 700 sul pc e vado a visualizzare la memoria interna del gps mi soprappone tutte le tracce registrate dal gps,

chiedo c'è un settaggio da poter visualizzare solamente la traccia selezionata. ??

I agree, I've never heard of it either but in the OPs case reinstalling BaseCamp got it working so the data was always there. Note it was his data that was missing, not his map.

I updated my DriveSmart GPS map using Garmin Express. Express gives the option to also load the map onto my PC for use by Basecamp, and I selected that as well.

It turns out that Express also updates Basecamp and as a result, Basecamp no longer contains the 100s of trail lists I have accumulated over the years. That discovery was close to a heart attack that!

I then reinstalled Basecamp 4.6.2 on the PC, and all my 100s of lists are now present, life-threatening event averted!

SUSSAMB , can you provide any more information about this? It is the first time that I have heard of a map installation to a PC affecting the Basecamp database. I thought the map installation process simply installed the map to a location where Basecamp would recognize its existence and be able to use it.

Deleting old maps in Garmin BaseCamp (Windows) can “break everything” if done incorrectly because BaseCamp relies on linked map files, registry entries, and shared components. Running Basecamp 4.7.5 Windows (in Parallels on a Mac but that shouldn't matter.) I am trying to delete some old maps. In Windows Control Panel I go to Uninstall Programs, pick one of the old ones, and click uninstall. It does its thing. Then Basecamp is gone. The program shortcut doesn't work. When I search for Basecamp in Explorer, it shows "Basecamp 2D", and that is worthless too. I have to restore my Windows image from the last good one, and then Basecamp works again. This uninstall process used to work, since forever. But now it is broken. I can't uninstall maps, and every time a new map comes out that's another 5GB of disk space that I have to give up.

Basecamp shows hundreds of "unknown" waypoints

I just installed new Maps (2027.1) on my Smart 60 and everything went well but, when I opened Basecamp, I see hundreds of black dots that seriously clutter the screen on wide zoom levels. The dots show up on any zoom level below 30 miles. When I click on the dot, it just says "unknown". I used to have a problem with airports showing up on wider zooms cluttering the screen, but discovered that I can disable that from the "Map Display Features" in the Options|Activity Profile. I have unchecked all of the boxes in here to try to get rid of them, but they persist.

I thought that maybe it had something to do with the new maps having a lot of new types of points, but when I switched back to my 2026.3 maps, the dots were still displayed.

Anyone know what's going on?

Running Basecamp 4.7.5. on Windows 11.

Just took a look at my setup. Those dots have always been present and some are identified as "unknown". They can't be removed, but they can be made less obtrusive by changing the Symbol Size under Edit>Options>Display. This also reduces the size of POI symbols, so keep that in mind. The dots appear to be part of each map version as the number of dots can change with older maps.
