I manage a team that works across multiple remote field locations and we use Garmin devices heavily for route planning and location tracking during field operations. works great for the navigation side obviously.

where things get complicated is syncing field team presence data with our back office systems. We recently started using a payroll system in Pakistan that needed to cross reference actual field hours with location data for accurate salary calculations. The tool we ended up using was Vertex HCM which handles the payroll side reasonably well but the integration between actual GPS field presence and attendance records is still mostly manual on our end.

I started wondering whether anyone here has found a workflow that connects Garmin BaseCamp route and location data with any kind of workforce management or attendance system. Even an indirect workflow through exports would be useful.

Is this something others have tried or are most people here using Garmin purely for navigation without any workforce tracking overlap?

eTrex Touch 35 internal memory

Hi

I am about to embark on a solo sailing adventure on a Hobie 16, that will set a Guinness World Record (GWR) for "Longest distance sailed by an individual in a two-person catamaran.

I will come ashore every night, so I will be tracking each days sail individually.

GWR requires that at the end of everyday I write down, in a log book, a series of statics from that days sailing.

-Latitude / Longitude

-Start Time / Finish Time

-Moving Time

-Stop Time

-Speed Average / Maximum

-Distance Daily / Total

I have combed over Garmin Support online, searched Youtube videos, even called Garmin support numerous times, but I have not found a simple way to view the data GWR requires to be written into a log book every night, from the track I record. I will be coming ashore on many deserted beaches and some completely deserted islands. Idealy I want to find a way that I can set up the 86i or the Garmin Explorer app, in such a way that everyday after I stop the 86i recording the track for that day, I can simply and easily see all the data GWR requires, either on the 86i or on the Explorer App (iPhone 17 ProMax).

If that is not possible to see all the information necessary for GWR, on the 86i device or paired with my iPhone.

I will have my laptop (Mac) with me on the adventure. So I could connect the 86i to my Mac every night. Though this will be a huge hassle while I am sleeping on the boat's trampoline deck, on deserted beaches or on tiny islands with blowing sand and salt water.

If I can only see the information GWR requires written into the log book everyday using the laptop, I want to have the laptop open for as little time as possible. How can I set up and see all the information on the BaseCamp or I guess the Explorer website as easily and quickly as possible on the laptop? Can I set up additional fields in BaceCamp or Explore to show additional data categories that I know are recorded on the 86i? Ideally, how can I configure the laptop programs in such a way, that I simply have to connect the 86i to the laptop, open the programs, see the data, and stow the laptop as quickly as possible.

I also need to back up all the tracking data into a couple places off the 86i, in case I destroy or loose the 86i. How do I back up the tracking data in more than one place?

In case anyone is interested in my sailing adventure you can see more at www.PhilippineHobieSailingAdventure.com.

Thank you for your assistance :)

The end is nigh for Basecamp Mac users

I opened Basecamp for Mac in my Macbook Air M1, and MacOS 26.4.1 pops up a warning that Basecamp will soon no longer function, with a link to this: https://support.apple.com/en-us/102527?cid=mc-ols-rosetta-article_102527-macos_finder-52526201

RE: The end is nigh for Basecamp Mac users

This is my opinion. Express is based on Xcode 15 (Sequoia) so Garmin may have just been waiting until it has to do the port.
If you can upload a video attempting to connect/sync with BaseCamp as well we can look at some troubleshooting options.

Connection Problem and Missing tracks

When I connect my overland to the Mac and then try to synch me recorded tracks it doesn't work. either I get a beach ball and the basecamp app will crash or it doesn't show my overlader. Nevertheless in Garmin Express it shows as connected.

I then tried to synch the recored track via the eplore App no the overlander. It didn't allow my to sync. So I did a relogin. Now synch is working.

But I lost all my local recorded tracks or at least I can't see them in the explore App. When I look at the storage usage I assume they are still on the device.

How can I get back my tracks and then synch them to my Mac? Thank a lot for you help

RE: Connection Problem and Missing tracks

I’m seeing a similar issue on my setup as well. You can definitely turn off recalc in your zumo. BC can indeed be used successfully to plan your NH to SC route (I just got done putting together a MA to NC route which avoids NYC). Not sure what you mean by "seeing waypoints," but if you mean placing them on your route, yes, you do need to zoom in to avoid inaccurate placement that can indeed screw up a route, but that's true of all mapping software.

RE: basecamp with XT2

You might like to try here which is specifically for Zumo users https://zumouserforums.co.uk/

RE: basecamp with XT2

So, unless there is a way to shut off recalculate then I am SOL with Garmin and the search continues for an iOS based mapping solution. I'm flabbergasted that no one, most notably Garmin, doesn't have a solution for mapping out your own route and using the GPS for guidance and allowing on the fly changes. I'm sure it's an exceedingly simple matter for them to implement, they just don't. As you said, you can meticulously modify a route that it forces on you only to have it recalculate along the way and need up the entire thing. When I tried to use a promising solution years ago I discovered, through their own admission, that the software designers don't talk to/review with the hardware guys.

I need to go from NH to SC on interstates, keep options open for checking out various sites along the way, avoid places like DC and (esp) NY city. I can't be the only one who wants too do this from time to time without jumping through endless hoops to keep it from redirecting you to whetter you don't want to go. Seeing waypoints is not much better, one error in seeing them can have you many miles off course if you don't catch it in time. If you don't realize what it's doing it will take you on a merry chased trying to get you back to the missed point.

I can use my iphone and a paper map if I want to go through that much hassle.

You listening, Garmin?
